A Message Concerning Ammon

1 The Lord spoke about the Ammonites. "Do you think there are not any people of the nation of Israel remaining? Do you think there are not any of them remaining to reinherit their land? Is that why you people who worship the god Milcom have taken possession of the territory of Gad and live in his cities?

1 Concerning the Ammonites, thus saith the LORD; Hath Israel no sons? hath he no heir? why then doth their king inherit Gad, and his people dwell in his cities?

1 Concerning the sons of (A)Ammon. Thus says the Lord:“Does Israel have no sons?Or has he no heirs? Why then has (a)Malcam taken possession of GadAnd his people settled in its cities?

1 About the Ammonites,(A) this is what the Lord says:Does Israel have no sons?Is he without an heir? Why then has Milcom(a)(b) dispossessed Gad(B)and his people settled in their cities?

1 To the people of Ammon: This is what the LORD says: "Does Israel have no sons? Does he have no heir? Why then has Milcom taken possession of Gad, and his people settled in its towns?

2 Because you did that, I, the Lord, affirm that a time is coming when I will make Rabbah, the capital city of Ammon, hear the sound of the battle cry. It will become a mound covered with ruins. Its villages will be burned to the ground. Then Israel will take back its land from those who took their land from them. I, the Lord, affirm it!

2 Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will cause an alarm of war to be heard in Rabbah of the Ammonites; and it shall be a desolate heap, and her daughters shall be burned with fire: then shall Israel be heir unto them that were his heirs, saith the LORD.

2 “Therefore behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord,“That I will cause a (b)(B)trumpet blast of war to be heardAgainst (C)Rabbah of the sons of Ammon; And it will become a desolate heap,And her (D)towns will be set on fire. Then Israel will take (E)possession of his possessors,”Says the Lord.

2 Therefore look, the days are coming—this is the Lord’s declaration—when I will make the shout of battle(C) heardagainst Rabbah of the Ammonites. It will become a desolate mound, and its villages will be burned down.Israel will dispossess their dispossessors, says the Lord.

2 Therefore, look, the time is coming," declares the LORD, "when I'll cause a battle cry to be heard in Rabbah of the Ammonites. It will become a desolate mound, and its towns will be burned with fire. Israel will take possession of those who possessed him," says the LORD.

3 Wail, you people in Heshbon, because Ai in Ammon is destroyed. Cry out in anguish, you people in the villages surrounding Rabbah. Put on sackcloth and cry out in mourning. Run about covered with gashes. For your god Milcom will go into exile along with his priests and officials.

3 Howl, O Heshbon, for Ai is spoiled: cry, ye daughters of Rabbah, gird you with sackcloth; lament, and run to and fro by the hedges; for their king shall go into captivity, and his priests and his princes together.

3 “Wail, O (F)Heshbon, for (G)Ai has been destroyed!Cry out, O daughters of Rabbah,(H)Gird yourselves with sackcloth and lament,And rush back and forth inside the walls; For (c)Malcam will (I)go into exileTogether with his priests and his princes.

3 Wail, Heshbon,(D) for Ai is devastated;cry out, daughters of Rabbah!Clothe yourselves with sackcloth,(E) and lament;run back and forth within your walls,(c)because Milcom will go into exiletogether with his priests and officials.(F)

3 "Wail, Heshbon, because Ai is destroyed. Cry out, daughters of Rabbah, put on sackcloth and lament. Run back and forth inside the walls, for Milcom is going into exile along with his priests and his princes.

4 Why do you brag about your great power? Your power is ebbing away, you rebellious people of Ammon, who trust in your riches and say, 'Who would dare to attack us?'

4 Wherefore gloriest thou in the valleys, thy flowing valley, O backsliding daughter? that trusted in her treasures, saying, Who shall come unto me?

4 “How (J)boastful you are about the valleys!Your valley is flowing away,O (K)backsliding daughterWho trusts in her (L)treasures, saying,(M)Who will come against me?’

4 Why do you brag about your valleys, your flowing valley,(d)you faithless daughter? You who trust in your treasuresand boast, “Who can attack me?”

4 Why do you boast in your valleys? Your valley is flowing away, faithless daughter, who trusted in her treasures, saying, "Who will come against me?'

5 I will bring terror on you from every side," says the Lord God who rules over all. "You will be scattered in every direction. No one will gather the fugitives back together.

5 Behold, I will bring a fear upon thee, saith the Lord GOD of hosts, from all those that be about thee; and ye shall be driven out every man right forth; and none shall gather up him that wandereth.

5 “Behold, I am going to bring (N)terror upon you,”Declares the Lord (d)God of hosts,“From all directions around you;And each of you will be (O)driven out (e)headlong,With no one to gather the (P)fugitives together.

5 Look, I am about to bring terror on you(G)this is the declaration ofthe Lord God of Hosts—from all those around you.You will be banished, each man headlong, with no one to gather up the fugitives.

5 Look, I'm bringing terror on you from all around you," declares the Lord GOD of the Heavenly Armies. "You will be driven out, fleeing recklessly, and there will be no one to gather the fugitives.

6 Yet in days to come I will reverse Ammon's ill fortune." says the Lord.

6 And afterward I will bring again the captivity of the children of Ammon, saith the LORD.

6 “But afterward I will (Q)restoreThe (f)fortunes of the sons of Ammon,”Declares the Lord.

6 But after that, I will restore the fortunes(e) of the Ammonites.(H)This is the Lord’s declaration.

6 But afterwards I'll restore the fortunes of the people of Ammon," declares the LORD.

7 Concerning Edom, thus saith the LORD of hosts; Is wisdom no more in Teman? is counsel perished from the prudent? is their wisdom vanished?

9 If grape pickers came to pick your grapes, would they not leave a few grapes behind? If robbers came at night, would they not pillage only what they needed?

9 If grapegatherers come to thee, would they not leave some gleaning grapes? if thieves by night, they will destroy till they have enough.

9 (W)If grape gatherers came to you,Would they not leave gleanings? If thieves came by night,They would destroy only (i)until they had enough.

9 If grape harvesters came to you, wouldn’t they leave some gleanings?(L)Were thieves to come in the night, they would destroy only what they wanted.(M)

9 If the grape harvesters came to you, would they not leave gleanings? If thieves came at night, they would destroy only until they had enough.

10 But I will strip everything away from Esau's descendants. I will uncover their hiding places so they cannot hide. Their children, relatives, and neighbors will all be destroyed. Not one of them will be left!

10 But I have made Esau bare, I have uncovered his secret places, and he shall not be able to hide himself: his seed is spoiled, and his brethren, and his neighbours, and he is not.

10 “But I have (X)stripped Esau bare,I have uncovered his hiding placesSo that he will not be able to conceal himself; His (j)offspring has been destroyed along with his (k)relativesAnd his neighbors, and (Y)he is no more.

11 Leave your orphans behind and I will keep them alive. Your widows too can depend on me."

11 Leave thy fatherless children, I will preserve them alive; and let thy widows trust in me.

11 “Leave your (l)(Z)orphans behind, I will keep them alive; And let your (AA)widows trust in Me.”

11 Abandon your fatherless; I will preserve them;let your widows trust in Me.(O)

11 Leave your orphans. I'll keep them alive. Let your widows trust in me."

12 For the Lord says, "If even those who did not deserve to drink from the cup of my wrath must drink from it, do you think you will go unpunished? You will not go unpunished, but must certainly drink from the cup of my wrath.

12 For thus saith the LORD; Behold, they whose judgment was not to drink of the cup have assuredly drunken; and art thou he that shall altogether go unpunished? thou shalt not go unpunished, but thou shalt surely drink of it.

12 For thus says the Lord, “Behold, those (m)who were not sentenced to drink the (AB)cup will certainly drink it, and are you the one who will be (AC)completely acquitted? You will not be acquitted, but you will certainly drink it.

12 “For this is what the Lord says: If those who do not deserve to drink the cup must drink it, can you possibly remain unpunished? You will not remain unpunished, for you must drink it too.

12 For this is what the LORD says: "Look, those who don't deserve to drink the cup will surely drink it, and will you actually go unpunished? You won't go unpunished! You will certainly drink it!

13 For I solemnly swear," says the Lord, "that Bozrah will become a pile of ruins. It will become an object of horror and ridicule, an example to be used in curses. All the towns around it will lie in ruins forever."

13 For I have sworn by myself, saith the LORD, that Bozrah shall become a desolation, a reproach, a waste, and a curse; and all the cities thereof shall be perpetual wastes.

13 For I have (AD)sworn by Myself,” declares the Lord, “that (AE)Bozrah will become an (AF)object of horror, a reproach, a ruin and a curse; and all its cities will become perpetual ruins.”

13 For by Myself I have sworn”—this is the Lord’s declaration—“Bozrah(g) will become a desolation, a disgrace, a ruin, and a curse, and all her cities will become ruins forever.”(P)

13 Indeed, I've sworn by myself," declares the LORD, "that Bozrah will become an object of horror and scorn, a waste, and an object of ridicule. All her towns will become perpetual ruins."

14 I said, "I have heard a message from the Lord. A messenger has been sent among the nations to say, 'Gather your armies and march out against her! Prepare to do battle with her!'"

14 I have heard a rumour from the LORD, and an ambassador is sent unto the heathen, saying, Gather ye together, and come against her, and rise up to the battle.

14 I have (AG)heard a message from the Lord,And an (AH)envoy is sent among the nations, saying,(AI)Gather yourselves together and come against her,And rise up for battle!”

14 I have heard a message from the Lord;a messenger has been sent among the nations:Assemble yourselves to come against her.Rise up for war!

14 I've heard a message from the LORD, and a messenger has been sent among the nations: "Gather together and come up against her, and rise up to fight.

15 The Lord says to Edom, "I will certainly make you small among nations. I will make you despised by all humankind.

15 For, lo, I will make thee small among the heathen, and despised among men.

15 “For behold, I have made you small among the nations,Despised among men.

15 Look, I will certainly make you insignificant among the nations, despised among humanity.

15 Indeed, I'll make you the least of the nations, despised among men.

16 The terror you inspire in others and the arrogance of your heart have deceived you. You may make your home in the clefts of the rocks; you may occupy the highest places in the hills. But even if you made your home where the eagles nest, I would bring you down from there," says the Lord.

16 Thy terribleness hath deceived thee, and the pride of thine heart, O thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, that holdest the height of the hill: though thou shouldest make thy nest as high as the eagle, I will bring thee down from thence, saith the LORD.

16 “As for the terror of you,The arrogance of your heart has deceived you,O you who live in the clefts of (n)the (AJ)rock,Who occupy the height of the hill.Though you make your nest as (AK)high as an eagle’s,I will (AL)bring you down from there,” declares the Lord.

16 As to the terror you cause,(h)your presumptuous heart has deceived you.You who live in the clefts of the rock,(i)you who occupy the mountain summit, though you elevate your nest like the eagle, even from there I will bring you down. This is the Lord’s declaration.(Q)

16 The terror you cause and the pride of your heart have deceived you. You who live in hidden places in the rocks, who hold on to the heights of the hill, although you make your nest high like the eagle, I'll bring you down from there," declares the LORD.

17 "Edom will become an object of horror. All who pass by it will be filled with horror; they will hiss out their scorn because of all the disasters that have happened to it.

17 Also Edom shall be a desolation: every one that goeth by it shall be astonished, and shall hiss at all the plagues thereof.

17 “Edom will become an (AM)object of horror; everyone who passes by it will be horrified and will (AN)hiss at all its wounds.

17 “Edom will become a desolation. Everyone who passes by her will be horrified and scoff because of all her wounds.(R)

17 "Edom will become an object of horror. Everyone who passes by her will be horrified and will scoff because of all her wounds.

18 Edom will be destroyed like Sodom and Gomorrah and the towns that were around them. No one will live there. No human being will settle in it," says the Lord.

18 As in the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbour cities thereof, saith the LORD, no man shall abide there, neither shall a son of man dwell in it.

18 Like the (AO)overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah with its neighbors,” says the Lord, “(AP)no one will live there, nor will a son of man reside in it.

18 As when Sodom and Gomorrah were overthrown along with their neighbors,”(S) says the Lord, “no one will live there; no human being will even stay in it as a temporary resident.(T)

18 Just like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighbors," says the LORD, "no one will live there. No human being will reside in it.

19 "A lion coming up from the thick undergrowth along the Jordan scatters the sheep in the pastureland around it. So too I will chase the Edomites off their land. Then I will appoint over it whomever I choose. For there is no one like me, and there is no one who can call me to account. There is no ruler who can stand up against me.

19 Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the swelling of Jordan against the habitation of the strong: but I will suddenly make him run away from her: and who is a chosen man, that I may appoint over her? for who is like me? and who will appoint me the time? and who is that shepherd that will stand before me?

19 (AQ)Behold, one will come up like a lion from the (o)(AR)thickets of the Jordan against (p)a perennially watered pasture; for in an instant I will make him run away from it, and whoever is (AS)chosen I shall appoint over it. For who is (AT)like Me, and who will summon Me into court? And who then is the shepherd (AU)who can stand against Me?”

19 “Look, it will be like a lion coming from the thickets(j) of the Jordan to the watered grazing land. Indeed, I will chase Edom away from her land in a flash. I will appoint whoever is chosen for her. For who is like Me? Who will summon Me?(U) Who is the shepherd who can stand against Me?”

19 Look, like a lion comes up from the thicket of the Jordan to a pasture that grows year round, so I'll drive them away from her in an instant, and I'll appoint whomever is chosen over her. Indeed, who is like me? Who gives me counsel? Who is the shepherd who will stand against me?"

20 So listen to what I, the Lord, have planned against Edom, what I intend to do to the people who live in Teman. Their little ones will be dragged off. I will completely destroy their land because of what they have done.

20 Therefore hear the counsel of the LORD, that he hath taken against Edom; and his purposes, that he hath purposed against the inhabitants of Teman: Surely the least of the flock shall draw them out: surely he shall make their habitations desolate with them.

20 Therefore hear the (AV)plan of the Lord which He has planned against Edom, and His purposes which He has purposed against the inhabitants of Teman: surely they will drag them off, even the little ones of the flock; surely He will make their (q)pasture (AW)desolate because of them.

20 Therefore, hear the plans that the Lord has drawn up against Edom and the strategies He has devised against the people of Teman:(V) The flock’s little lambs will certainly be dragged away,(W) and their grazing land will be made desolate because of them.

20 Therefore, hear the plan that the LORD has made against Edom, and the strategy that he devised against the inhabitants of Teman. Surely he will drag the little ones of the flock away. Surely their pasture will be desolate because of them.

21 The people of the earth will quake when they hear of their downfall. Their cries of anguish will be heard all the way to the Gulf of Aqaba.

21 The earth is moved at the noise of their fall, at the cry the noise thereof was heard in the Red sea.

21 The (AX)earth has quaked at the noise of their downfall. There is an outcry! The noise of it has been heard at the (r)Red Sea.

21 At the sound of their fall the earth will quake; the sound of her cry will be heard at the Red Sea.(X)

21 The earth will quake at the sound of their fall. A cry it's her voice is heard at the Reed Sea.

22 Look! Like an eagle with outspread wings, a nation will soar up and swoop down on Bozrah. At that time the soldiers of Edom will be as fearful as a woman in labor."

22 Behold, he shall come up and fly as the eagle, and spread his wings over Bozrah: and at that day shall the heart of the mighty men of Edom be as the heart of a woman in her pangs.

22 Behold, (s)He will mount up and (AY)swoop like an eagle and spread out His wings (t)against Bozrah; and the (AZ)hearts of the mighty men of Edom in that day will be like the heart of a woman in labor.

22 Look! It will be like an eagle soaring upward, then swooping down and spreading its wings over Bozrah. In that day the hearts of Edom’s warriors will be like the heart of a woman with contractions.(Y)

22 Look, he will rise up and fly swiftly like an eagle. He will spread his wings against Bozrah, and on that day the hearts of the warriors of Edom will be like the heart of a woman in labor.

24 Damascus is waxed feeble, and turneth herself to flee, and fear hath seized on her: anguish and sorrows have taken her, as a woman in travail.

24 “Damascus has become helpless; She has turned away to flee,And panic has gripped her;(BF)Distress and pangs have taken hold of herLike a woman in childbirth.
