Eliphaz's Second Response To Job

1 Then responded Eliphaz the Temanite, and said:

1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite (a)responded,

1 Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,

1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied:

1 Then Eliphaz from Teman responded:

2 Should, a wise man, answer unreal knowledge? or fill, with the east wind, his inner man?

2 “Should a wise man answer with windy knowledge(A)And fill (b)himself with the east wind?

2 Should a wise man utter vain knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind?

2 Does a wise man answer with empty(a) counsel(A)or fill himself(b) with the hot east wind?

2 "Should a wise person respond with knowledge based on wind? Should he fill his stomach with a wind storm from the east?

3 Disputing with discourse that doth no good, or with speech, wherein is no profit?

3 “Should he argue with useless talk,Or with words which are not profitable?

3 Should he reason with unprofitable talk? or with speeches wherewith he can do no good?

3 Should he argue(B) with useless talkor with words that serve no good purpose?

3 Should he engage in unprofitable argument, or give a speech that benefits no one?

4 But, thou, wouldst take away reverence, and wouldst attain unto meditation before GOD.

4 “Indeed, you do away with (c)reverenceAnd hinder meditation before God.

4 Yea, thou castest off fear, and restrainest prayer before God.

4 But you even undermine the fear of Godand hinder meditation before Him.

4 Yet you dispense with fear of God and hinder meditations before God.

5 For thine own mouth would teach thine iniquity, and thou wouldst choose the tongue of the crafty.

5 “For (B)your guilt teaches your mouth,And you choose the language of (C)the crafty.

5 For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou choosest the tongue of the crafty.

5 Your iniquity(C) teaches you what to say,and you choose the language of the crafty.

5 Because your sin dictates your speech, you have chosen the language of the crafty.

6 Thine own mouth shall condemn thee, and, not I, And, thine own lips, shall testify against thee.

6 “Your (D)own mouth condemns you, and not I;And your own lips testify against you.

6 Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I: yea, thine own lips testify against thee.

6 Your own mouth condemns you, not I;your own lips testify against you.(D)

6 Your own mouth is condemning you, not I; your own lips will testify against you."

You Are Not The Only Wise Person, Job

7 The first of mankind, wast thou born? Or, before the hills, wast thou brought forth?

7 “Were you the first man to be born,Or (E)were you brought forth before the hills?

7 Art thou the first man that was born? or wast thou made before the hills?

7 Were you the first person ever born,or were you brought forth before the hills?(E)

7 "Were you the first personto be born? Were you brought forth before the hills were made?

8 In the secret council of GOD, hast thou been wont to hearken? Or canst thou attain for thyself unto wisdom?

8 “Do you hear the (F)secret counsel of God,And limit wisdom to yourself?

8 Hast thou heard the secret of God? and dost thou restrain wisdom to thyself?

8 Do you listen in on the council of God,or have a monopoly on wisdom?(F)

8 Have you listened in on God's secret council? Have you limited wisdom only to yourself?

9 What knowest thou, that we know not? What understandest thou, and the same, is not with us?

9 (G)What do you know that we do not know?What do you understand that (d)we do not?

9 What knowest thou, that we know not? what understandest thou, which is not in us?

9 What do you know that we don’t?What do you understand that is not clear to us?

9 What do you know that we don't know, or that you understand and that isn't clear to us?

10 Both hoary and venerable, are among us, one mightier than thy father in days!

10 “Both the (H)gray-haired and the aged are among us,Older than your father.

10 With us are both the grayheaded and very aged men, much elder than thy father.

10 Both the gray-haired and the elderly are with us,men older than your father.

10 "We have both the gray-haired and the aged with us, and they are far older than your father.

11 Too small for thee, are the consolations of GOD? or a word spoken gently with thee?

11 “Are (I)the consolations of God too small for you,Even the (J)word spoken gently with you?

11 Are the consolations of God small with thee? is there any secret thing with thee?

11 Are God’s consolations not enough for you,even the words that deal gently with you?

11 Are God's encouragements inconsequential to you, even a word that has been spoken gently to you?

12 How doth thine own heart carry thee away, and how thine eyes do roll!

12 “Why does your (K)heart carry you away?And why do your eyes flash,

12 Why doth thine heart carry thee away? and what do thy eyes wink at,

12 Why has your heart misled you,and why do your eyes flash

12 Why have your emotions carried you away? And why do your eyes flash

13 For thy spirit, replieth against GOD, and thou bringest forth - out of thy mouth - words!

13 That you should turn your spirit against GodAnd allow such words to go out of your mouth?

13 That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest such words go out of thy mouth?

13 as you turn your anger(c) against Godand allow such words to leave your mouth?

13 that you turn your anger against God and speak words like this?

14 What is a mortal, that he should be pure? or that righteous should be one born of a woman?

14 “What is man, that (L)he should be pure,Or (M)he who is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?

14 What is man, that he should be clean? and he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?

14 What is man, that he should be pure,(G)or one born of woman, that he should be righteous?

14 "What is mankind, that he can be blameless? Or does being born of a woman mean he'll be in the right?

15 Lo! in his holy ones, he putteth not confidence, and, the heavens, are not pure in his eyes:

15 “Behold, He puts no trust in His (N)holy ones,And the (O)heavens are not pure in His sight;

15 Behold, he putteth no trust in his saints; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight.

15 If God puts no trust in His holy ones(H)and the heavens are not pure in His sight,(I)

15 Look, if God doesn't trust his holy ones, if even the heavens aren't pure as he looks at them,

16 How much less when one is detested and corrupt, a man who drinketh in - like water - perversity.

16 How much less one who is (P)detestable and corrupt,Man, who (Q)drinks iniquity like water!

16 How much more abominable and filthy is man, which drinketh iniquity like water?

16 how much less one who is revolting and corrupt,(J)who drinks injustice(K) like water?

16 then how much less is one who is abhorred and corrupted, such as a man who drinks injustice like water?"

I Want To Tell You What I Know

17 I will tell thee - hear me, Since this I have seen, I must needs declare it.

17 “I will tell you, listen to me;And what I have seen I will also declare;

17 I will shew thee, hear me; and that which I have seen I will declare;

17 Listen to me and I will inform you.I will describe what I have seen,

17 "I'll tell you what, listen to me! Let me relate what I've seen,

18 Which, wise men, tell, and deny not that which is from their fathers.

18 What wise men have told,And have not concealed from (R)their fathers,

18 Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hid it:

18 what was declared by wise menand was not suppressed by their ancestors,(L)

18 which is what wise men have explained, who didn't withhold anything from their ancestors.

19 To them alone, was the earth given, and no alien passed through their midst:

19 To whom alone the land was given,And no alien passed among them.

19 Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.

19 the land was given to them alonewhen no foreigner passed among them.

19 To them alone was the land given, when no invader passed through their midst.

The Tortured Life Of The Wicked Person

20 All the days of the lawless man, he, doth writhe with pain, and, the number of years, is hidden from the tyrant;

20 “The wicked man writhes (S)in pain all his days,And (e)numbered are the years (T)stored up for the ruthless.

20 The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden to the oppressor.

20 A wicked man writhes in pain all his days;only a few(d) years are reserved for the ruthless.

20 "The wicked person writhes in pain throughout his life, a number of years has been reserved for the ruthless.

21 A noise of dreadful things, is in his ears, In prosperity, the destroyer cometh upon him;

21 (f)Sounds of (U)terror are in his ears;(V)While at peace the destroyer comes upon him.

21 A dreadful sound is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.

21 Dreadful sounds fill his ears;when he is at peace, a robber attacks him.

21 Terrifying sounds ring in his ears; when times are prosperous, the Destroyer will attack him.

22 He hath no confidence to come back out of darkness, he, being destined to the power oft the sword;

22 “He does not believe that he will (W)return from darkness,And he is destined for (X)the sword.

22 He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword.

22 He doesn’t believe he will return from darkness;he is destined for the sword.(M)

22 He does not believe he will escape darkness; he is destined for the sword.

23 A wanderer, he, for bread, saying Where is it ? He knoweth that, prepared by his own hand, is the day of darkness;

23 “He wanders about for food, saying, ‘Where is it?’He knows that a day of (Y)darkness is (g)at hand.

23 He wandereth abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.

23 He wanders about for food, saying, “Where is it?”He knows the day of darkness is at hand.

23 He wanders around for food where is it? He knows that a time of darkness is near.

24 Distress and anguish shall startle him, It shall overpower him, like a king ready for the onset:

24 “Distress and anguish terrify him,They overpower him like a king ready for the attack,

24 Trouble and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.

24 Trouble(N) and distress terrify him,overwhelming him like a king prepared for battle.

24 Distress and pressure terrify him; they overwhelm him, like a king poised for attack.

25 Because he had stretched out - against GOD - his hand, and, against the Almighty, had been wont to behave himself proudly;

25 Because he has stretched out his hand against GodAnd conducts himself (Z)arrogantly against (h)the Almighty.

25 For he stretcheth out his hand against God, and strengtheneth himself against the Almighty.

25 For he has stretched out his hand(O) against Godand has arrogantly opposed the Almighty.

25 "For he has raised his fist against God, defying the Almighty.

26 He used to run against him with uplifted neck, with the stout bosses of his bucklers;

26 “He rushes (i)headlong at HimWith (j)his massive shield.

26 He runneth upon him, even on his neck, upon the thick bosses of his bucklers:

26 He rushes headlong at Himwith his thick, studded shields.

26 He defiantly ran against him carrying his thick, reinforced shield.

27 For he had covered his face with his fatness, and had gathered a superabundance on his loins;

27 “For he has (AA)covered his face with his fatAnd made his thighs heavy with flesh.

27 Because he covereth his face with his fatness, and maketh collops of fat on his flanks.

27 Though his face is covered with fat(e)and his waistline bulges with it,

27 Though he covered his face with fat, and is grossly overweight at the waist,

28 And had inhabited demolished cities, houses, wherein men would not dwell, that were destined to become heaps.

28 “He has (AB)lived in desolate cities,In houses no one would inhabit,Which are destined to become (k)ruins.

28 And he dwelleth in desolate cities, and in houses which no man inhabiteth, which are ready to become heaps.

28 he will dwell in ruined cities,in abandoned houses destined to become piles of rubble.(P)

28 He will live in devastated towns, in abandoned houses that are about to become heaps of rubble.

29 He shall not be rich, nor shall his substance continue, neither shall their shadow stretch along on the earth;

29 “He (AC)will not become rich, nor will his wealth endure;And his grain will not bend down to the ground.

29 He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall he prolong the perfection thereof upon the earth.

29 He will no longer be rich; his wealth will not endure.His possessions(f) will not increase in the land.

29 "He won't become rich and his wealth won't last; he won't expand his holdings to cover the land.

30 He shall not depart out of darkness, his young branch, shall the flame dry up, and he shall depart, by the breath of his own mouth!

30 “He will (AD)not (l)escape from darkness;The (AE)flame will wither his shoots,And by (AF)the breath of His mouth he will go away.

30 He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.

30 He will not escape from the darkness;flames will wither his shoots,and by the breath of God’s mouth, he will depart.(Q)

30 He won't escape darkness; a flame will wither his shoots; and he'll depart by the breath of God's mouth.

31 Let no one trust in him that - by vanity - is deceived, for, vanity, shall be his recompense;

31 “Let him not (AG)trust in emptiness, deceiving himself;For emptiness will be his (m)reward.

31 Let not him that is deceived trust in vanity: for vanity shall be his recompence.

31 Let him not put trust in worthless things, being led astray,for what he gets in exchange will prove worthless.

31 Let him not trust in a worthless speech. He leads only himself astray, for emptiness will be his reward.

32 Before his day, shall it be accomplished, with, his palm-top, not covered with leaves;

32 “It will be accomplished (AH)before his time,And his palm (AI)branch will not be green.

32 It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be green.

32 It will be accomplished before his time,and his branch will not flourish.

32 This will be accomplished before his time; his branches won't grow luxuriant.

33 He shall wrong - like a vine - his sour grapes, and shall cast off - as an olive-tree - his blossom.

33 “He will drop off his unripe grape like the vine,And will (AJ)cast off his flower like the olive tree.

33 He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive.

33 He will be like a vine that drops its unripe grapes(R)and like an olive tree that sheds its blossoms.

33 "He is like a vine that drops its unripe grapes; like an olive tree that loses its blossoms.

34 For, the family of the impious, is unfruitful, and, a fire, hath devoured the tents of bribery;

34 “For the company of (AK)the godless is barren,And fire consumes (AL)the tents of (n)the corrupt.

34 For the congregation of hypocrites shall be desolate, and fire shall consume the tabernacles of bribery.

34 For the company of the godless(S) will have no children,and fire will consume the tents of those who offer bribes.

34 For the company of the godless is desolation, and fire consumes the tents of those who bribe.

35 Conceiving mischief, and bringing forth iniquity, yea, their inmost soul, prepareth deceit.

35 “They (AM)conceive (o)mischief and bring forth iniquity,And their (p)mind prepares deception.”

35 They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their belly prepareth deceit.

35 They conceive trouble(T) and give birth to evil;their womb(U) prepares deception.(V)

35 For they conceive mischief and give birth to iniquity; their womb is pregnant with deception."
