Job 15

¹ Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,

³ Thou reprovest with words, that are worth nothing; and speakest the things which can do no good!

³ “Should he argue with useless talk,Or with words which are not profitable?

³ Should he reason with unprofitable talk? or with speeches wherewith he can do no good?

³ Should he argue^(B) with useless talkor with words that serve no good purpose?

³ Should he engage in unprofitable argument, or give a speech that benefits no one?

⁵ But thy wickedness teacheth thy mouth, and so thou hast chosen thee a crafty tongue.

⁵ “For ^(B)your guilt teaches your mouth,And you choose the language of ^(C)the crafty.

⁵ For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou choosest the tongue of the crafty.

⁵ Your iniquity^(C) teaches you what to say,and you choose the language of the crafty.

⁵ Because your sin dictates your speech, you have chosen the language of the crafty.

⁷ Art thou the first man that ever was born? Or, wast thou made before the hills?

⁷ “Were you the first man to be born,Or ^(E)were you brought forth before the hills?

⁷ Art thou the first man that was born? or wast thou made before the hills?

⁷ Were you the first person ever born,or were you brought forth before the hills?^(E)

⁷ "Were you the first personto be born? Were you brought forth before the hills were made?

⁹ What knowest thou, that we know not? What understandest thou, but we can the same?

⁹ “^(G)What do you know that we do not know?What do you understand that ^(d)we do not?

⁹ What knowest thou, that we know not? what understandest thou, which is not in us?

⁹ What do you know that we don’t?What do you understand that is not clear to us?

⁹ What do you know that we don't know, or that you understand and that isn't clear to us?

¹¹ Thinkest thou it a small thing of the consolations of God? With thee is a lying word.

¹¹ “Are ^(I)the consolations of God too small for you,Even the ^(J)word spoken gently with you?

¹¹ Are the consolations of God small with thee? is there any secret thing with thee?

¹¹ Are God’s consolations not enough for you,even the words that deal gently with you?

¹¹ Are God's encouragements inconsequential to you, even a word that has been spoken gently to you?

¹³ that thy mind is so puffed up against God and lettest such words go out of thy mouth?

¹³ That you should turn your spirit against GodAnd allow such words to go out of your mouth?

¹³ That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest such words go out of thy mouth?

¹³ as you turn your anger^(c) against Godand allow such words to leave your mouth?

¹³ that you turn your anger against God and speak words like this?

¹⁵ Behold, he doth not trust his saints; yea, the very heavens are not clean in his sight.

¹⁵ “Behold, He puts no trust in His ^(N)holy ones,And the ^(O)heavens are not pure in His sight;

¹⁵ Behold, he putteth no trust in his saints; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight.

¹⁵ If God puts no trust in His holy ones^(H)and the heavens are not pure in His sight,^(I)

¹⁵ Look, if God doesn't trust his holy ones, if even the heavens aren't pure as he looks at them,

¹⁷ "I will tell thee; hear me. I will show thee a thing, that I know;

¹⁷ “I will tell you, listen to me;And what I have seen I will also declare;

¹⁷ I will shew thee, hear me; and that which I have seen I will declare;

¹⁷ Listen to me and I will inform you.I will describe what I have seen,

¹⁷ "I'll tell you what, listen to me! Let me relate what I've seen,

¹⁹ unto whom only the land was given, that no stranger should come among them.

¹⁹ To whom alone the land was given,And no alien passed among them.

¹⁹ Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.

¹⁹ the land was given to them alonewhen no foreigner passed among them.

¹⁹ To them alone was the land given, when no invader passed through their midst.

²¹ A fearful sound is ever in his ears, and when it is peace yet feareth he destruction.

²¹ “^(f)Sounds of ^(U)terror are in his ears;^(V)While at peace the destroyer comes upon him.

²¹ A dreadful sound is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.

²¹ Dreadful sounds fill his ears;when he is at peace, a robber attacks him.

²¹ Terrifying sounds ring in his ears; when times are prosperous, the Destroyer will attack him.

²³ When he goeth forth to get his living, he thinketh plainly, that the day of darkness is at hand.

²³ “He wanders about for food, saying, ‘Where is it?’He knows that a day of ^(Y)darkness is ^(g)at hand.

²³ He wandereth abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.

²³ He wanders about for food, saying, “Where is it?”He knows the day of darkness is at hand.

²³ He wanders around for food where is it? He knows that a time of darkness is near.

²⁵ For he hath stretched out his hand against God, and armed himself against the Almighty.

²⁵ Because he has stretched out his hand against GodAnd conducts himself ^(Z)arrogantly against ^(h)the Almighty.

²⁵ For he stretcheth out his hand against God, and strengtheneth himself against the Almighty.

²⁵ For he has stretched out his hand^(O) against Godand has arrogantly opposed the Almighty.

²⁵ "For he has raised his fist against God, defying the Almighty.

²⁷ whereas he covereth his face with fatness, and maketh his body well liking.

²⁷ “For he has ^(AA)covered his face with his fatAnd made his thighs heavy with flesh.

²⁷ Because he covereth his face with his fatness, and maketh collops of fat on his flanks.

²⁷ Though his face is covered with fat^(e)and his waistline bulges with it,

²⁷ Though he covered his face with fat, and is grossly overweight at the waist,

²⁹ He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, nor increase upon earth.

²⁹ “He ^(AC)will not become rich, nor will his wealth endure;And his grain will not bend down to the ground.

²⁹ He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall he prolong the perfection thereof upon the earth.

²⁹ He will no longer be rich; his wealth will not endure.His possessions^(f) will not increase in the land.

²⁹ "He won't become rich and his wealth won't last; he won't expand his holdings to cover the land.

³¹ He will never apply himself to faithfulness and truth, so sore is he deceived with vanity.

³¹ “Let him not ^(AG)trust in emptiness, deceiving himself;For emptiness will be his ^(m)reward.

³¹ Let not him that is deceived trust in vanity: for vanity shall be his recompence.

³¹ Let him not put trust in worthless things, being led astray,for what he gets in exchange will prove worthless.

³¹ Let him not trust in a worthless speech. He leads only himself astray, for emptiness will be his reward.

³³ He shall be plucked off as an untimely grape from the vine, and shall let his flower fall, as the olive doth.

³³ “He will drop off his unripe grape like the vine,And will ^(AJ)cast off his flower like the olive tree.

³³ He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive.

³³ He will be like a vine that drops its unripe grapes^(R)and like an olive tree that sheds its blossoms.

³³ "He is like a vine that drops its unripe grapes; like an olive tree that loses its blossoms.

³⁵ He conceiveth travail, he beareth mischief, and his body bringeth forth deceit."

³⁵ “They ^(AM)conceive ^(o)mischief and bring forth iniquity,And their ^(p)mind prepares deception.”

³⁵ They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their belly prepareth deceit.

³⁵ They conceive trouble^(T) and give birth to evil;their womb^(U) prepares deception.^(V)

³⁵ For they conceive mischief and give birth to iniquity; their womb is pregnant with deception."
