2 Can a man be useful to God, as he who is wise may be useful to himself?
2 Can a man be profitable unto God, as he that is wise may be profitable unto himself?
2 Can a man be of any use to God?Can even a wise man be of use to Him?
2 "Can a human being be useful to God, since he, who is wise, is sufficient to himself?
3 Is it any pleasure to the Almighty that you are righteous, or gain to Him that you make your ways perfect?
3 Is it any pleasure to the Almighty, that thou art righteous? or is it gain to him, that thou makest thy ways perfect?
3 Will it please the Almighty if you are innocent, or does he profit if your life is blameless?
4 Will He reprove you because of your reverence, or enter into judgment with you?
4 Will he reprove thee for fear of thee? will he enter with thee into judgment?
4 Will he acquit you just because you fear him, and render a verdict on your behalf?
5 Is not your wickedness great, and your iniquity without measure?
5 Is not thy wickedness great? and thine iniquities infinite?
5 Isn’t your wickedness abundantand aren’t your iniquities endless?
5 Your wickedness is great, isn't it? There's no limit to your iniquity, is there?
6 For you have taken a pledge from your brother for nothing, and stripped the naked of their clothing.
6 For thou hast taken a pledge from thy brother for nought, and stripped the naked of their clothing.
6 "After all, you've taken collateral from your relatives for no reason; you stripped the naked of their clothing.
7 You have not given water to the weary to drink, and you have held back bread from the hungry.
7 Thou hast not given water to the weary to drink, and thou hast withholden bread from the hungry.
7 You've neglected to give water to the weary, and you've withheld food from the hungry.
8 But as for the mighty man, he had the earth, and the honored man lived in it.
8 But as for the mighty man, he had the earth; and the honourable man dwelt in it.
8 while the land belonged to a powerful manand an influential man lived on it.
8 The land belongs to the powerful, and the privileged thrive in it.
9 You have sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.
9 Thou hast sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.
9 You sent away widows empty-handed, and broke the outstretched arms of orphans.
10 Therefore snares are all around you, and sudden fear troubles you;
10 Therefore snares are round about thee, and sudden fear troubleth thee;
10 That's why disaster surrounds you, terror suddenly overwhelms you,
11 or darkness, so that you cannot see; and a flood of waters covers you.
11 Or darkness, that thou canst not see; and abundance of waters cover thee.
11 you see nothing but darkness, and a flood of troubles drowns you."
12 Is not God high in Heaven? And behold the leading stars, for they are high.
12 Is not God in the height of heaven? and behold the height of the stars, how high they are!
12 Isn’t God as high as the heavens? And look at the highest stars—how lofty they are!
12 "Isn't God in heaven above? Consider how far away the stars are, and how lofty they are!
13 And you say, What does God know? Can He judge through the dark cloud?
13 And thou sayest, How doth God know? can he judge through the dark cloud?
13 You've asked, "What does God know? Can he sort through pitch black darkness?'
14 Clouds are a covering to Him, so that He does not see; and He walks in the circuit of Heaven.
14 Thick clouds are a covering to him, that he seeth not; and he walketh in the circuit of heaven.
14 Thick clouds cover him so he can't see as he walks back and forth at heaven's horizon.
15 Do you keep to the old way which wicked men have walked?
15 Hast thou marked the old way which wicked men have trodden?
15 Will you continue on the ancient paththat wicked men have walked?
15 "Will you keep walking on the traditional path that sinners have tread,
16 They were seized, but there was not time; their foundation was poured out by a flood;
16 Which were cut down out of time, whose foundation was overflown with a flood:
16 who were snatched away before their time; when their foundation was swept away by a river?
17 who said to God, Depart from us; and, What can the Almighty do to them?
17 Which said unto God, Depart from us: and what can the Almighty do for them?
17 They told God, "Get away from us!' and "What will the Almighty do to them?'
18 Yet He filled their houses with substance; and the wisdom of the wicked is far from me.
18 Yet he filled their houses with good things: but the counsel of the wicked is far from me.
18 But it was He who filled their houses with good things. The counsel of the wicked is far from me!
18 "Though God fills their houses with good things, the counsel of the wicked will remain far from me.
19 The righteous see it, and are glad; and the innocent laugh them to scorn.
19 The righteous see it, and are glad: and the innocent laugh them to scorn.
19 The righteous will see this and rejoice; the innocent will insult him, saying,
20 Truly our foe is not cut down, and fire has eaten their wealth.
20 Whereas our substance is not cut down, but the remnant of them the fire consumeth.
20 "Our enemies are sure to be destroyed, and fire will burn up what's left of their riches."
21 Now be of service with Him, and be at peace. Good shall come to you by them.
21 Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee.
21 "Get to know God, and you'll be at peace with him, and then prosperity will come to you.
22 Please receive the Law from His mouth and lay up His words in your heart.
22 Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart.
22 Accept what he has to teach you, and treasure his words in your heart.
23 If you return to the Almighty, you shall be built up; you shall put away injustice far from your tents.
23 If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, thou shalt put away iniquity far from thy tabernacles.
23 "If you return to the Almighty you'll be restored, as you remove iniquity from your household.
24 Then you shall lay up gold like dust, and among the rock of the torrents of Ophir.
24 Then shalt thou lay up gold as dust, and the gold of Ophir as the stones of the brooks.
24 Bury your gold nuggets in the dust, and your source of gold among the stones in a streambed,
25 Yea, the Almighty shall be your gold and silver, and strength to you.
25 Yea, the Almighty shall be thy defence, and thou shalt have plenty of silver.
25 the Almighty will be your goldand your finest silver.
25 and then the Almighty will be your gold and your refined silver.
26 For then you shall have your delight in the Almighty, and shall lift up your face to God.
26 For then shalt thou have thy delight in the Almighty, and shalt lift up thy face unto God.
26 "Then you'll take delight in the Almighty; and will turn your face toward God.
27 You shall make your prayer to Him, and He shall hear you, and you shall pay your vows.
27 Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he shall hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows.
27 You'll entreat him and he'll listen to you as you fulfill your vows.
28 You shall also order a thing, and it shall be fulfilled to you; and the light shall shine on your ways.
28 Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways.
28 When you make a decision on something, it will be established for you, and light will brighten your way.
29 For they have humiliated you, and you shall say, Pride! And He shall save the lowly of eyes.
29 When men are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting up; and he shall save the humble person.
29 "For when they're humbled, you may respond; "It's their pride!' but he delivers the humble.
30 He shall deliver one not innocent, and will deliver by the pureness of your hands.
30 He shall deliver the island of the innocent: and it is delivered by the pureness of thine hands.
30 He'll even deliver the guilty, who will be delivered through your innocence."
