1 These the nations which Jehovah left to try Israel by them, (all which knew not the wars of Canaan;
1 (A)Now these are the nations which the Lord left, to test Israel by them (that is, all who had not (a)experienced any of the wars of Canaan;
1 Now these are the nations which the LORD left, to prove Israel by them, even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of Canaan;
1 These are the nations the Lord left in order to test Israel, since the Israelites had fought none of these in(a) any of the wars with Canaan.(A)
1 Here's a list of nations that the LORD caused to remain in order to test Israel (that is, everyone who had not gained any battle experience in Canaan)
2 Only for the generations of the sons of Israel to know to teach them war, only who before knew not;)
2 only in order that the generations of the sons of Israel might (b)be taught war, (c)those who had not (d)experienced it formerly).
2 Only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as before knew nothing thereof;
2 This was to teach the future generations of the Israelites how to fight in battle, especially those who had not fought before.(b)
2 only so that successive Israeli generations, who had not known war previously, might come to know it by experience.
3 Five princes of Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivite dwelling in mount Lebanon, from mount Baal-Hermon.
3 These nations are: the five lords of the Philistines and all the Canaanites and the Sidonians and (B)the Hivites who lived in Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal-hermon as far as (e)Lebo-hamath.
3 Namely, five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baalhermon unto the entering in of Hamath.
3 These nations included: the five rulers(B) of the Philistines(C) and all of the Canaanites, the Sidonians,(D) and the Hivites(E) who lived in the Lebanese mountains(c) from Mount Baal-hermon as far as the entrance to Hamath.(d)
3 These nations included the five lords of the Philistines, all of the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites who lived in Mount Baal-hermon as far as Lebo-hamath.
4 And they will be to try Israel by them to know whether they will hear the commands of Jehovah which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.
4 They were for (f)(C)testing Israel, to find out if they would (g)obey the commandments of the Lord, which He had commanded their fathers (h)through Moses.
4 And they were to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of the LORD, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.
4 The Lord left them to test Israel, to determine if they would keep the Lord’s commands He had given their fathers through(e) Moses.(F)
4 They remained there to test Israel, to reveal if they would obey the commands of the LORD that he issued to their ancestors through Moses.
5 And the sons of Israel dwelt in the midst of the Canaanites, the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites:
5 (D)The sons of Israel lived among the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites;
5 And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, Hittites, and Amorites, and Perizzites, and Hivites, and Jebusites:
5 But they settled among the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites.
5 The Israelis continued to live among the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites,
6 And they will take their daughters to them for wives, and their daughters they will give to their sons, and they will serve their gods.
6 and (E)they took their daughters for themselves as wives, and gave their own daughters to their sons, and served their gods.

6 The Israelites took their daughters as wives for themselves, gave their own daughters to their sons, and worshiped their gods.(G)

7 And the sons of Israel will do evil in the eyes of Jehovah, and they will forget Jehovah their God, and they will serve the Baalims and the wooden pillars.
7 The sons of Israel did (F)what was evil in the sight of the Lord, and (G)forgot the Lord their God and (H)served the Baals and the (i)Asheroth.
7 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and forgat the LORD their God, and served Baalim and the groves.
7 The Israelites did what was evil in the Lord’s sight; they forgot the Lord their God(H) and worshiped the Baals and the Asherahs.
7 The Israelis kept on practicing evil in full view of the LORD. They forgot the LORD their God and served Canaanite male and female deities.
8 And the wrath of Jehovah will kindle against Israel, and he will sell them into the hand of Cushan-Rishathaim, king of Aram-Naharim: and the sons of Israel will serve Cushan-Rishathaim eight years.
8 Then the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, so that He sold them into the hands of Cushan-rishathaim king of (j)Mesopotamia; and the sons of Israel served Cushan-rishathaim eight years.
8 Therefore the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Chushanrishathaim eight years.
8 The Lord’s anger burned against Israel, and He sold them to(f) Cushan-rishathaim(g) king of Aram-naharaim,(h)(I) and the Israelites served him eight years.
8 Then in his burning anger against Israel, the LORD delivered them to domination by King Cushan-rishathaim of Aram-naharaim. So the Israelis served Cushan-rishathaim for eight years.
9 And the sons of Israel will cry to Jehovah, and Jehovah will raise up a saviour to the sons of Israel, and he will save them, Othniel, son of Kenaz, Caleb's brother younger than he.
9 When the sons of Israel cried to the Lord, the Lord raised up a deliverer for the sons of Israel to deliver them, (I)Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother.
9 And when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer to the children of Israel, who delivered them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother.
9 The Israelites cried out to the Lord.(J) So the Lord raised up Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb’s youngest brother,(K) as a deliverer(L) to save the Israelites.
9 When the Israelis cried out to the LORD, the LORD raised up Othniel son of Caleb's younger brother Kenaz, to deliver them, and he did.
10 And the spirit of Jehovah will be upon him, and he will judge Israel, and he will go forth to war: and Jehovah will give into his hand Cushan-Rishathaim, king of Aram; and his hand will be strong upon Cushan-Rishathaim.
10 (J)The Spirit of the Lord came upon him, and he judged Israel. When he went out to war, the Lord gave Cushan-rishathaim king of (k)Mesopotamia into his hand, so that (l)he prevailed over Cushan-rishathaim.
10 And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel, and went out to war: and the LORD delivered Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Chushanrishathaim.
10 The Spirit of the Lord came on him, and he judged Israel. Othniel went out to battle, and the Lord handed over Cushan-rishathaim king of Aram to him, so that Othniel overpowered him.
10 The Spirit of the LORD was on him, and he governed Israel. When Othniel went out to battle, the LORD handed king Cushan-rishathaim of Aram-naharaim into his control, and Othniel's domination of Cushan-rishathaim was strong.
11 And the land will rest forty years: and Othniel, son of Kenaz, will die.
11 Then the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.
11 And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.
11 As a result, the land was quiet for 40 years. Then Kenaz' son Othniel died.
12 And the sons of Israel will add to do evil in the eyes of Jehovah: and Jehovah will strengthen Eglon, king of Moab, against Israel, because they did evil in the eyes of Jehovah.
12 Now the sons of Israel again (K)did evil in the sight of the Lord. So (L)the Lord strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of the Lord.
12 And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of the LORD.
12 The Israelites again did what was evil in the Lord’s sight. He gave Eglon king of Moab(N) power over Israel, because they had done what was evil in the Lord’s sight.
12 The Israelis again practiced evil in full view of the LORD. So the LORD strengthened Eglon king of Moab in his control over Israel, because they had practiced evil in full view of the LORD.
13 And he will gather to him the sons of Ammon and Amalek, and he will go and smite Israel, and will inherit the city of palmtrees.
13 And he gathered to himself the sons of Ammon and Amalek; and he went and (m)defeated Israel, and they possessed (M)the city of the palm trees.
13 And he gathered unto him the children of Ammon and Amalek, and went and smote Israel, and possessed the city of palm trees.
13 After Eglon convinced the Ammonites and the Amalekites to join forces with him, he attacked and defeated Israel and took possession of the City of Palms.(i)(O)
13 Eglon assembled together the Ammonites and the Amalekites, proceeded to attack Israel, and captured the cities of palms.
14 And the sons of Israel will serve Eglon, king of Moab, eighteen years.
14 The sons of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.
14 So the children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.
14 The Israelites served Eglon king of Moab 18 years.
14 So the Israelis served king Eglon of Moab for eighteen years.
15 And the sons of Israel will cry to Jehovah, and Jehovah will raise up to them a saviour, Ehud, son of Gera, son of a Benjamite, a man shut up of his right hand: and the sons of Israel will send a gift by his hand to Eglon, king of Moab.
15 But when the sons of Israel (N)cried to the Lord, the Lord raised up a deliverer for them, Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a left-handed man. And the sons of Israel sent tribute by (n)him to Eglon the king of Moab.
15 But when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised them up a deliverer, Ehud the son of Gera, a Benjamite, a man lefthanded: and by him the children of Israel sent a present unto Eglon the king of Moab.
15 Then the Israelites cried out to the Lord, and He raised up Ehud son of Gera, a left-handed(P) Benjaminite,(j) as a deliverer for them. The Israelites sent him to Eglon king of Moab with tribute(Q) money.
15 But when the Israelis cried out to the LORD, the LORD raised up Gera's son Ehud, a left-handed descendant of Benjamin, as a deliverer for them. The Israelis paid tribute through him to king Eglon of Moab.
16 And Ehud will make to him a sword, and to it two mouths; a cubit its length: and he will gird it from under his garments upon his right thigh.
16 Ehud made himself a sword which had two edges, a cubit in length, and he bound it on his right thigh under his cloak.
16 But Ehud made him a dagger which had two edges, of a cubit length; and he did gird it under his raiment upon his right thigh.
16 Ehud made himself a double-edged sword 18 inches long.(k) He strapped it to his right thigh under his clothes
16 Ehud forged a double-edged sword that was one cubit long, tied it to his right thigh under his cloak,
17 And he will bring the gift to Eglon, king of Moab: and Eglon a very fat man.
17 He presented the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. Now Eglon was a very fat man.
17 And he brought the present unto Eglon king of Moab: and Eglon was a very fat man.
17 and brought the tribute to Eglon king of Moab, who was an extremely fat man.
17 and went to present the tribute to King Eglon of Moab. Now Eglon happened to be a very obese man.
18 And it will be as he finished to bring the gift, and he will send away the people lifting up the gift.
18 It came about when he had finished presenting the tribute, that he sent away the people who had carried the tribute.
18 And when he had made an end to offer the present, he sent away the people that bare the present.
18 When Ehud had finished presenting the tribute, he dismissed the people who had carried it.
18 As he finished presenting the tribute, Ehud sent away the people who had been carrying it.
19 And he turned back from the carved images which were at Gilgal, and he will say, A hidden word to me for thee, O king: and he will say, Silence! And all standing by him will go forth from him.
19 But he himself turned back from the idols which were at Gilgal, and said, “I have a secret message for you, O king.” And he said, “Keep silence.” And all who attended him left him.
19 But he himself turned again from the quarries that were by Gilgal, and said, I have a secret errand unto thee, O king: who said, Keep silence. And all that stood by him went out from him.
19 At the carved images near Gilgal he returned and said, “King Eglon, I have a secret message for you.” The king called for silence, and all his attendants left him.
19 He had turned away from the idols that were at Gilgal. So he told Eglon, "I have a secret message for you, king." King Eglon responded "Silence!" and all of his attendants left him.
20 And Ehud came to him; and he sat in an upper chamber of cooling, which was to him alone: and Ehud will say, A word of God to me for thee. And he will rise from off the throne.
20 Ehud came to him while he was sitting alone in his cool roof chamber. And Ehud said, “I have a message from God for you.” And he arose from his seat.
20 And Ehud came unto him; and he was sitting in a summer parlour, which he had for himself alone. And Ehud said, I have a message from God unto thee. And he arose out of his seat.
20 Then Ehud approached him while he was sitting alone in his room upstairs where it was cool. Ehud said, “I have a word from God for you,” and the king stood up from his throne.(l)
20 Ehud approached him while he was sitting by himself in the cool roof chamber of his palace. He said, "I have a message from God for you!" So when Eglon got up from his seat,
21 And Ehud will stretch forth his left hand, and will take the sword from off his right thigh, and he will drive it into his belly:
21 Ehud stretched out his left hand, took the sword from his right thigh and thrust it into his belly.
21 And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the dagger from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly:
21 Ehud(m) reached with his left hand, took the sword from his right thigh, and plunged it into Eglon’s belly.
21 Ehud used his left hand to take the sword from his right thigh and then plunged it into Eglon's abdomen.
22 And the handle will also go in after the flame, and the fat will shut upon the flame, for he drew not the sword out of his belly; and the dirt came out.
22 The handle also went in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade, for he did not draw the sword out of his belly; and the refuse came out.
22 And the haft also went in after the blade; and the fat closed upon the blade, so that he could not draw the dagger out of his belly; and the dirt came out.
22 Even the handle went in after the blade, and Eglon’s fat closed in over it, so that Ehud did not withdraw the sword from his belly. And Eglon’s insides came out.
22 The hilt also penetrated along with the sword blade, and Eglon's fat closed in over the blade. Because he did not withdraw the sword from Eglon's abdomen, the sword point exited from Eglon's entrails.
23 And Ehud will come forth to the portico, and he will shut the doors of the upper chamber upon him, and fasten.
23 Then Ehud went out into the vestibule and shut the doors of the roof chamber behind him, and locked them.
23 Then Ehud went forth through the porch, and shut the doors of the parlour upon him, and locked them.
23 Ehud escaped by way of the porch, closing and locking the doors of the upstairs room behind him.
23 Then Ehud left the cool chamber in the direction of the vestibule, shutting and locking the doors behind him.
24 And he went forth, and his servants came in, and saw, and behold, the doors of the upper chamber were fastened; and they will say, Surely he is covering his feet in the chamber of cooling.
24 When he had gone out, his servants came and looked, and behold, the doors of the roof chamber were locked; and they said, “(O)He is only (o)relieving himself in the cool room.”
24 When he was gone out, his servants came; and when they saw that, behold, the doors of the parlour were locked, they said, Surely he covereth his feet in his summer chamber.
24 Ehud was gone when Eglon’s servants came in. They looked and found the doors of the upstairs room locked and thought he was relieving himself(n) in the cool room.
24 After he left, Eglon's attendants came to look, but the doors to the cool chamber were locked! So they said, "He must be relieving himself in the inner part of the cool chamber."
25 And they will delay till being ashamed: and behold, he opened not the doors of the upper chamber; and they will take a key and will open: and behold, their lord fallen upon the earth, dead.
25 They waited until they (p)became anxious; but behold, he did not open the doors of the roof chamber. Therefore they took the key and opened them, and behold, their master had fallen to the (q)floor dead.
25 And they tarried till they were ashamed: and, behold, he opened not the doors of the parlour; therefore they took a key, and opened them: and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the earth.
25 The servants waited until they became worried and saw that he had still not opened the doors of the upstairs room. So they took the key and opened the doors—and there was their lord lying dead on the floor!
25 They waited until they were embarrassed, since he never opened the doors to the chamber. Eventually they took a key, opened the doors, and found their master dead on the ground.
26 And Ehud was saved during their consternation; and he passed by the carved images and will be saved at the the gates.
26 Now Ehud escaped while they were delaying, and he passed by the idols and escaped to Seirah.
26 And Ehud escaped while they tarried, and passed beyond the quarries, and escaped unto Seirath.
26 Ehud escaped while the servants waited. He crossed over the Jordan near the carved images and reached Seirah.
26 Meanwhile, Ehud escaped while they were delayed, passed by the idols, and escaped in the direction of Seirah.
27 And it will be in his coming out, and he will clang upon the trumpet in mount Ephraim, and the sons of Israel will go down with him from the mountain, and he before them.
27 It came about when he had arrived, that (P)he blew the trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim; and the sons of Israel went down with him from the hill country, and he was in front of them.
27 And it came to pass, when he was come, that he blew a trumpet in the mountain of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the mount, and he before them.
27 After he arrived, he sounded the ram’s horn throughout the hill country of Ephraim. The Israelites came down with him from the hill country, and he became their leader.
27 When he arrived there, he sounded a trumpet in the mountainous region of Ephraim. While the Israeli army accompanied Ehud from the mountainous regions,
28 And he will say to them, Follow after me, for Jehovah gave your enemies, Moab, into your hand. And they will go down after him and will take the passages of Jordan toward Moab, and they gave not a man to pass over.
28 He said to them, “Pursue them, for the Lord has given your enemies the Moabites into your hands.” So they went down after him and seized (Q)the fords of the Jordan opposite Moab, and did not allow anyone to cross.
28 And he said unto them, Follow after me: for the LORD hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of Jordan toward Moab, and suffered not a man to pass over.
28 He told them, “Follow me, because the Lord has handed over your enemies, the Moabites, to you.” So they followed him, captured the fords of the Jordan leading to Moab, and did not allow anyone to cross over.(R)
28 he told them, "Attack them, because the LORD has given your enemies the Moabites into your control." So the Israeli army followed after him, seized the fords of the Jordan River opposite Moab, and did not allow anyone to cross.
29 And they will smite Moab in that time, about ten thousand men, every one fat and every man strong: and not a man was saved.
29 They struck down at that time about ten thousand Moabites, all robust and valiant men; and no one escaped.
29 And they slew of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, all lusty, and all men of valour; and there escaped not a man.
29 At that time they struck down about 10,000 Moabites, all strong and able-bodied men. Not one of them escaped.
29 At that time they attacked about 10,000 Moabites, all of whom were strong and valiant men. Not one man escaped.
30 And Moab will be subdued in that day under the hand of Israel: and the land will rest eighty years.
30 So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land was undisturbed for eighty years.
30 So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest fourscore years.
30 Moab became subject to Israel that day, and the land was peaceful 80 years.
30 As a result, Moab was subdued under the control of Israel, and the land remained quiet for 80 years.
31 And after him was Shamgar, son of Anath; and he will smite the Philistines, six hundred men with an ox-goad; and he also will deliver Israel
31 After him came (R)Shamgar the son of Anath, who struck down six hundred Philistines with an oxgoad; and he also saved Israel.
31 And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, which slew of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox goad: and he also delivered Israel.
31 After Ehud, Shamgar son of Anath became judge. He delivered Israel by striking down 600 Philistines with an oxgoad.
31 After Ehud, Anath's son Shamgar attacked 600 Philistines with a cattle prod. He also delivered Israel.
