Warning Against Hypocrisy

1 About this time, while a crowd of many thousands had assembled, [so large that] people were trampling on one another, Jesus first began telling His disciples, "Watch out for the leavening [effect] of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.

1 Under these circumstances, after (a)so many thousands of (b)people had gathered together that they were stepping on one another, He began saying to His disciples first of all, (A)Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.

1 In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.

1 In these circumstances,(a) a crowd of many thousands came together, so that they were trampling(A) on one another. He began to say to His disciples first:(B) “Be on your guard(C) against the yeast(b)(D) of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.(E)

1 Meanwhile, the people had gathered by the thousands and were trampling on one another. Jesus began to speak first to his disciples. "Watch out for the yeast that is, the hypocrisy of the Pharisees!

2 But there is nothing [they do that will remain] covered up; it will [all] be exposed. [And there is] nothing done secretly that will not be made known [openly].

2 (B)But there is nothing covered up that will not be revealed, and hidden that will not be known.

2 For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known.

2 There is nothing covered that won’t be uncovered,(F) nothing hidden that won’t be made known.(G)

2 There is nothing covered up that won't be exposed and nothing secret that won't be made known.

3 Therefore, whatever you have said in the darkness [i.e., in obscurity] will be heard in the light [i.e., openly]. And what you have whispered in someone's ear in a back room, will be declared from the housetops.

3 Accordingly, whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have (c)whispered in the inner rooms will be proclaimed upon (C)the housetops.

3 Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light; and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops.

3 Therefore, whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in an ear in private rooms(H) will be proclaimed on the housetops.(I)

3 Therefore, what you have said in darkness will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in private rooms will be shouted from the housetops."

Fear God Rather Than People

4 And I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who can kill your body and after that can do nothing more.

4 “I say to you, (D)My friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that have no more that they can do.

4 And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.

4 “And I say to you, My friends,(J) don’t fear(K) those who kill the body, and after that can do nothing more.

4 "But I tell you, my friends, never be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can't do anything more.

5 But I am warning you about whom you should fear. Fear the One [i.e., God] who, after He has killed [i.e., the body], has power to throw [you] into hell [See note on Matt. 5:29]. Yes, I tell you, fear Him.

5 But I will (d)warn you whom to fear: (E)fear the One who, after He has killed, has authority to cast into (e)(F)hell; yes, I tell you, fear Him!

5 But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.

5 But I will show you the One to fear: Fear(L) Him who has authority to throw people into hell(M) after death. Yes, I say to you, this is the One to fear!

5 I'll show you the one you should be afraid of. Be afraid of the one who has the authority to throw you into hell after killing you. Yes, I tell you, be afraid of him!

6 Are not five sparrows sold [i.e., in the market as food] for two coins? [Note: The coins here amount to just over one hour's worth of a farm laborer's pay, or about $8 in 1994]. Yet in the presence of God, not a [single] one of them is forgotten.

6 Are not (G)five sparrows sold for two (f)cents? Yet not one of them is forgotten before God.

6 Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God?

6 Aren’t five sparrows sold for two pennies?(c) Yet not one of them is forgotten in God’s sight.(N)

6 "Five sparrows are sold for two pennies, aren't they? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God.

7 [God even knows] the number of hairs on your head [Note: The average full head of hair has approximately 25,000 hairs]. [So], do not be afraid, for you are [much] more valuable than many sparrows.

7 (H)Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear; you are more valuable than many sparrows.

7 But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.

7 Indeed, the hairs of your head are all counted. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows!

7 Why, even all the hairs on your head have been counted! Stop being afraid. You are worth more than a bunch of sparrows."

Acknowledgement Of Christ And Persecution Of Disciples

8 "And I tell you, every person who acknowledges me in front of people [i.e., to be his Lord and Christ], the Son of man will also acknowledge him in front of God's angels.

8 “And I say to you, everyone who (I)confesses Me before men, the Son of Man will confess him also before the angels of God;

8 Also I say unto you, Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God:

8 “And I say to you, anyone who acknowledges(O) Me before men, the Son of Man(P) will also acknowledge him before the angels of God,(Q)

8 "But I tell you, the Son of Man will acknowledge before God's angels everyone who acknowledges me before people.

9 But that person who disowns me in front of people [i.e., denies that I am the Christ, or that he is a disciple. See John 18:15-17, 25-27], will be disowned in front of God's angels.

9 but (J)he who denies Me before men will be denied (K)before the angels of God.

9 But he that denieth me before men shall be denied before the angels of God.

9 but whoever denies Me before men will be denied before the angels of God.(R)

9 But whoever denies me before people will be denied before God's angels.

10 And every person who speaks an [abusive] word against the Son of man will be forgiven of it, but the person who speaks abusive words against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven of it.

10 (L)And everyone who (g)speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him.

10 And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven.

10 Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven,(S) but the one who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit(T) will not be forgiven.

10 Everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but the person who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit won't be forgiven.

11 And when people bring you in front of synagogue assemblies and rulers and authorities [i.e., for judgment], do not worry about how to speak or what you should say.

11 When they bring you before (M)the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities, do not (N)worry about how or what you are to speak in your defense, or what you are to say;

11 And when they bring you unto the synagogues, and unto magistrates, and powers, take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say:

11 Whenever(U) they bring you before synagogues and rulers and authorities,(V) don’t worry(W) about how you should defend(X) yourselves or what you should say.

11 When people bring you before synagogue leaders, rulers, or authorities, don't worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say,

12 For the Holy Spirit will teach you what you should say at that very time."

12 for (O)the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.”

12 For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say.

12 For the Holy Spirit will teach you at that very hour what must be said.”(Y)

12 because at that time the Holy Spirit will teach you what you are to say."

The Parable Of The Rich Landowner Who Was A Fool

13 Then someone out of the crowd said to Jesus, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the [family] inheritance with me."

13 Someone (h)in the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me.”

13 And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me.

13 Someone from the crowd said to Him, “Teacher,(Z) tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”

13 Then someone in the crowd told him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me."

14 But He said to him, "Man, who appointed me to judge or [decide on how] to divide [the property] between you two?"

14 But He said to him, (P)Man, who appointed Me a judge or arbitrator over you?”

14 And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you?

14 “Friend,”(d) He said to him, “who appointed Me a judge or arbitrator over you?”

14 But Jesus asked him, "Mister, who appointed me to be a judge or arbitrator over you people?"

15 And [then] He said to them, "Be careful and guard yourselves against [practicing] all forms of greed, for a person's life does not consist of having a lot of possessions."

15 Then He said to them, (Q)Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed; for not even when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions.”

15 And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.

15 He then told them, “Watch out and be on guard(AA) against all greed(AB) because one’s life is not in the abundance of his possessions.”(AC)

15 Then he told them, "Be careful to guard yourselves against every kind of greed, because a person's life doesn't consist of the amount of possessions he has."

16 And He told them a parable [i.e., a brief story to illustrate His teaching], saying, "The land of a certain rich man produced a bumper crop,

16 And He told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man was very productive.

16 And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:

16 Then He told them a parable:(AD) “A rich(AE) man’s land was very productive.

16 Then he told them a parable. He said, "The land of a certain rich man produced good crops.

17 so he thought to himself, 'What should I do, because I do not have any [more] room to store my crops?'

17 And he began reasoning to himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no place to store my crops?’

17 And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?

17 He thought to himself, ‘What should I do, since I don’t have anywhere to store my crops?

17 So he began to think to himself, "What should I do, since I have no place to store my crops?'

18 Then he said [to himself], 'This is what I will do. I will tear down my barns and build larger [ones]; then I will store all my grain and [other] goods there [i.e., farm supplies].

18 Then he said, ‘This is what I will do: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.

18 And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.

18 I will do this,’ he said. ‘I’ll tear down my barns and build bigger ones and store all my grain and my goods there.

18 Then he said, "This is what I'll do. I'll tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and I'll store all my grain and goods in them.

19 And I will say to myself, 'Soul, you have plenty of goods [i.e., grain and supplies] stored up for many years, [so], take it easy; eat, drink and have fun.'

19 And I will say to my soul, “Soul, (R)you have many goods laid up for many years to come; take your ease, eat, drink and be merry.”’

19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.

19 Then I’ll say to myself, “You(e) have many goods stored up for many years. Take it easy;(AF) eat, drink, and enjoy yourself.”’(AG)

19 Then I'll say to myself, "You've stored up plenty of good things for many years. Take it easy, eat, drink, and enjoy yourself."'

20 But God said to him, 'You fool! Tonight your life will be taken away from you. And [then] who will get the things you have stored up [for yourself]?'

20 But God said to him, ‘(S)You fool! This very night (i)(T)your soul is required of you; and (U)now who will own what you have prepared?’

20 But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?

20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool!(AH) This very night your life is demanded of you. And the things you have prepared—whose will they be?’(AI)

20 But God told him, "You fool! This very night your life will be demanded back from you. Now who will get the things you've accumulated?'

21 This is [the way it will be with] the person who stores up treasures for himself, and [yet] is not rich toward God [i.e., does place enough importance on spiritual things]."

21 So is the man who (V)stores up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”

21 So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.

21 “That’s how it is with the one who stores up treasure(AJ) for himself and is not rich toward God.”(AK)

21 That's how it is with the person who stores up treasures for himself rather than with God."

Anxiety

22 Then Jesus said to His disciples, "So, I tell you, do not worry about [the material things of] your life, [such as] what you will eat or what you will wear on your body.

22 And He said to His disciples, (W)For this reason I say to you, (j)do not worry about your (k)life, as to what you will eat; nor for your body, as to what you will put on.

22 And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on.

22 Then He said to His disciples: “Therefore I tell you,(AL) don’t worry about your life, what you will eat; or about the body, what you will wear.(AM)

22 Then Jesus told his disciples, "That's why I'm telling you to stop worrying about your life what you will eat or about your body what you will wear,

23 For there are more important things in life than food, and [more important things about] your body than the clothing [you wear].

23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing.

23 The life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment.

23 For life is more than food and the body more than clothing.

23 because life is more than food, and the body more than clothing.

24 Look at the ravens; they do not plant seeds or harvest [a crop]; they do not have a storage locker or a barn, and [yet] God feeds them [adequately]. Are you not a lot more valuable than those birds?

24 Consider the (X)ravens, for they neither sow nor reap; they have no storeroom nor (Y)barn, and yet God feeds them; how much more valuable you are than the birds!

24 Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls?

24 Consider the ravens:(AN) They don’t sow or reap; they don’t have a storeroom or a barn; yet God feeds them.(AO) Aren’t you worth much more than the birds?

24 Consider the crows. They don't plant or harvest, they don't even have a storeroom or barn, yet God feeds them. How much more valuable are you than birds!

25 And which one of you can worry yourself into living a single day longer?

25 And which of you by worrying can add a single (l)(Z)hour to his (m)life’s span?

25 And which of you with taking thought can add to his stature one cubit?

25 Can any of you add a cubit to his height(f) by worrying?(AP)

25 Can any of you add an hour to the length of your life by worrying?

26 So, if you are not able to do even a little thing like that, why are you worrying about the rest?

26 If then you cannot do even a very little thing, why do you worry about other matters?

26 If ye then be not able to do that thing which is least, why take ye thought for the rest?

26 If then you’re not able to do even a little thing, why worry about the rest?

26 So if you can't do a small thing like that, why worry about other things?

27 "Consider how [wild] lilies grow; they do not work or weave, yet I tell you, even Solomon, clothed in his very finest royal robes, was never dressed [as luxuriously] as one of these [flowers].

27 Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; but I tell you, not even (AA)Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these.

27 Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

27 “Consider how the wildflowers grow: They don’t labor or spin thread. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon(AQ) in all his splendor was adorned like one of these!

27 Consider how the lilies grow. They don't work or spin yarn, but I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was clothed like one of them.

28 But if God so [beautifully] dresses the grass in a field, which is [green] today, and [then] tomorrow [dries up and] is thrown into the oven [i.e., as fuel], will He not do even more in providing your clothing, you people with such little faith?

28 But if God so clothes the grass in the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, how much more will He clothe you? (AB)You men of little faith!

28 If then God so clothe the grass, which is to day in the field, and to morrow is cast into the oven; how much more will he clothe you, O ye of little faith?

28 If that’s how God clothes the grass, which is in the field today and is thrown into the furnace tomorrow, how much more will He do for you—you of little faith?(AR)

28 Now if that's the way God clothes the grass in the field, which is alive today and thrown into an oven tomorrow, how much more will he clothe you you who have little faith?

29 So, do not look [anxiously] for what you will eat, and what you will drink, and do not be [continually] worried [i.e., about such things].

29 And do not seek what you will eat and what you will drink, and do not (AC)keep worrying.

29 And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind.

29 Don’t keep striving for what you should eat and what you should drink, and don’t be anxious.

29 "So stop concerning yourselves about what you will eat or what you will drink, and stop being distressed,

30 For all these things are what the [unconverted] nations of the world keep trying to get. But your Father [already] knows you need these things.

30 For (n)all these things the nations of the world eagerly seek; but your Father knows that you need these things.

30 For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things.

30 For the Gentile world eagerly seeks(AS) all these things, and your Father(AT) knows that you need them.

30 because it is the unbelievers who are concerned about all these things. Surely your Father knows that you need them!

31 So, look for God's kingdom and these things [i.e., food, drink and clothing] will be provided for you.

31 But seek His kingdom, and (AD)these things will be added to you.

31 But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you.

31 “But seek His kingdom,(AU) and these things will be provided for you.(AV)

31 Instead, be concerned about his kingdom, and these things will be provided for you as well.

Don'T Trust In Money

32 " [And], do not be afraid, little flock [Note: Jesus refers to His small band of disciples as sheep following Him as their Shepherd], for your Father was pleased to give you the kingdom.

32 (AE)Do not be afraid, (AF)little flock, for (AG)your Father has chosen gladly to give you the kingdom.

32 Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.

32 Don’t be afraid,(AW) little flock,(AX) because your Father delights(AY) to give you the kingdom.(AZ)

32 Stop being afraid, little flock, because your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom.

33 Sell your possessions and give [the money] to poor people; provide yourselves with money belts that do not wear out [i.e., from the constant use of carrying much money all the time, instead of investing it in others' needs]. [Then you will possess] an inexhaustible treasure in heaven, where no thief can approach, nor moth destroy.

33 (AH)Sell your possessions and give to charity; make yourselves money belts which do not wear out, (AI)an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near nor moth destroys.

33 Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth.

33 Sell(BA) your possessions and give to the poor.(BB) Make money-bags(BC) for yourselves that won’t grow old, an inexhaustible treasure(BD) in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.

33 "Sell your possessions, and give the money to the poor. Make yourselves wallets that don't wear out a dependable treasure in heaven, where no thief can get close and no moth can destroy anything.

34 For wherever you store your valuables, that is where your heart [i.e., your real concern] will be also.

34 For (AJ)where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.(BE)

34 Because where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."

On The Alert For The Master's Return

35 "Fasten your belts [i.e., get things ready], keep your lamps lit,

35 (o)(AK)Be dressed in (AL)readiness, and keep your lamps lit.

35 Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning;

35 “Be ready for service(g) and have your lamps lit.(BF)

35 "You must keep your belts fastened and your lamps burning.

36 and be like men expecting their master to return from the wedding reception, so that when he does come and knock [at the groom's house, See note on Matt. 25:1-12], they will immediately open [the door] to him.

36 Be like men who are waiting for their master when he returns from the wedding feast, so that they may immediately open the door to him when he comes and knocks.

36 And ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open unto him immediately.

36 You must be like people waiting for their master(BG) to return(h) from the wedding banquet(BH) so that when he comes and knocks, they can open the door for him at once.(BI)

36 Be like people who are waiting for their master to return from a wedding. As soon as he arrives and knocks, they will open the door for him.

37 Those slaves whom their master finds being watchful when he returns are [certainly] blessed. Truly I tell you, he will fasten his belt [i.e., get things ready] and have them recline [at his dinner table] and will come and serve them.

37 Blessed are those slaves whom the master will find (AM)on the alert when he comes; truly I say to you, that (AN)he will gird himself to serve, and have them recline at the table, and will come up and wait on them.

37 Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them.

37 Those slaves the master will find alert(BJ) when he comes will be blessed. I assure you: He will get ready,(i) have them recline at the table, then come and serve them.(BK)

37 How blessed are those servants whom the master finds watching for him when he comes! I tell all of you with certainty, he himself will put on an apron, make them sit down at the table, and go around and serve them.

38 And if he comes between nine o'clock and midnight or between midnight and three o'clock in the morning and finds them being watchful, those slaves will be blessed [for doing so].

38 (AO)Whether he comes in the (p)second watch, or even in the (q)third, and finds them so, blessed are those slaves.

38 And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants.

38 If he comes in the middle of the night, or even near dawn,(j) and finds them alert, those slaves are blessed.

38 How blessed they will be if their master comes in the middle of the night or near dawn and finds them awake!

39 But you should realize this, if the owner of the house had known exactly when the burglar was coming, he would not have allowed his house to be broken into.

39 (AP)But (r)be sure of this, that if the head of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have allowed his house to be (s)(AQ)broken into.

39 And this know, that if the goodman of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched, and not have suffered his house to be broken through.

39 But know this: If the homeowner had known at what hour the thief was coming,(BL) he would not have let his house be broken into.

39 But be sure of this: if the homeowner had known at what time the thief were coming, he would have watched and would not have let his house be broken into.

40 So, you also should be ready, for the Son of man will return at a time when you least expect Him."

40 (AR)You too, be ready; for the Son of Man is coming at an hour that you do not (t)expect.”

40 Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not.

40 You also be ready,(BM) because the Son of Man(BN) is coming at an hour that you do not expect.”(BO)

40 So be ready, because the Son of Man is coming at a time when you don't expect him."

A Faithful Slave And An Unfaithful Slave

41 Then Peter said, "Lord, are you telling this parable for our benefit [only] or for all people?"

41 Peter said, “Lord, are You addressing this parable to us, or (AS)to everyone else as well?”

41 Then Peter said unto him, Lord, speakest thou this parable unto us, or even to all?

41 “Lord,” Peter asked, “are You telling this parable to us or to everyone?”

41 Peter asked, "Lord, are you telling this parable just for us or for everyone?"

42 And the Lord answered, "Who then is the trustworthy and sensible property manager, to whom his master will assign the management of his household, to provide adequate and timely meals for its members?

42 And (AT)the Lord said, (AU)Who then is the faithful and sensible (AV)steward, whom his master will put in charge of his (u)servants, to give them their rations at the proper time?

42 And the Lord said, Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of meat in due season?

42 The Lord said: “Who then is the faithful and sensible manager(BP) his master will put in charge of his household servants to give them their allotted food(BQ) at the proper time?

42 The Lord said, "Who, then, is the faithful and careful servant manager whom his master will put in charge of giving all his other servants their share of food at the right time?

43 That servant will be happy when his master returns to find him doing [his job] well.

43 Blessed is that (AW)slave whom his (v)master finds so doing when he comes.

43 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.

43 That slave whose master finds him working when he comes will be rewarded.

43 How blessed is that servant whom his master finds doing this when he comes!

44 Truly I tell you, he will put that slave in charge of his entire estate.

44 Truly I say to you that he will put him in charge of all his possessions.

44 Of a truth I say unto you, that he will make him ruler over all that he hath.

44 I tell you the truth: He will put him in charge of all his possessions.

44 I tell you with certainty, he will put him in charge of all his property.

45 But if that slave should think to himself, 'My master will not be back soon,' and then becomes physically abusive to his men and women servants, and eats and drinks and gets drunk,

45 But if that slave says in his heart, ‘My master (w)will be a long time in coming,’ and begins to beat the slaves, both men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk;

45 But and if that servant say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken;

45 But if that slave says in his heart, ‘My master is delaying his coming,’(BR) and starts to beat the male and female slaves, and to eat and drink and get drunk,

45 But if that servant says to himself, "My master is taking a long time to come back,' and begins to beat the other servants and to eat, drink, and get drunk,

46 that slave's master will return on a day that he least expects, and at an hour unknown [to him]. And [that master] will whip him to shreds and will turn him over to suffer the same fate as unfaithful servants receive.

46 the master of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know, and will cut him in pieces, and assign him a place with the unbelievers.

46 The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.

46 that slave’s master will come on a day he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know. He will cut him to pieces(k) and assign him a place with the unbelievers.(l)

46 the master of that servant will come on a day when he doesn't expect him and at an hour that he doesn't know. Then his master will punish him severely and assign him a place with unfaithful people.

47 And that slave who knew what his master wanted, but did not make preparations [i.e., for his master's return], or do what his master wanted, will be whipped with many lashes.

47 And that slave who knew his master’s will and did not get ready or act in accord with his will, will (AX)receive many lashes,

47 And that servant, which knew his lord's will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.

47 And that slave who knew his master’s will and didn’t prepare himself or do it(m) will be severely beaten.(BS)

47 That servant who knew what his master wanted but didn't prepare himself or do what was wanted will receive a severe beating.

48 But the one who did not know [i.e., what his master wanted], yet did things deserving of punishment, will be whipped with few lashes. And to the person who has been given much [responsibility], there will be much required [of him]. And to whom people entrust much [responsibility], they will ask [much] more from him.

48 but the one who did not (AY)know it, and committed deeds worthy of (x)a flogging, will receive but few. (AZ)From everyone who has been given much, much will be required; and to whom they entrusted much, of him they will ask all the more.

48 But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.

48 But the one who did not know and did things deserving(BT) of blows will be beaten lightly. Much will be required of everyone who has been given much. And even more will be expected of the one who has been entrusted with more.(n)(BU)

48 But the servant who did things that deserved a beating without knowing it will receive a light beating. Much will be required from everyone to whom much has been given. But even more will be demanded from the one to whom much has been entrusted."

Not Peace, But A Sword Of Divisiveness

49 "I have come to bring fire to the earth. [Note: This means division within families. See verses 51-53] And how I wish that fire were already started [i.e., so I could complete my mission sooner]!

49 “I (y)have come to cast fire upon the earth; and (z)how I wish it were already kindled!

49 I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I, if it be already kindled?

49 “I came(BV) to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already set ablaze!

49 "I've come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already ablaze!

50 But I have an immersion to experience [i.e., overwhelming suffering to undergo. See Mark 10:38-39], and what stress I am under until it happens!

50 But I have a (BA)baptism to (aa)undergo, and how distressed I am until it is accomplished!

50 But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished!

50 But I have a baptism to be baptized with,(BW) and how it consumes(BX) Me until it is finished!(BY)

50 I have a baptism to be baptized with, and what stress I am under until it's completed!

51 Do you think that I came to bring [only] peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but division instead.

51 (BB)Do you suppose that I came to grant peace on earth? I tell you, no, but rather division;

51 Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division:

51 Do you think that I came here to give peace to the earth?(BZ) No, I tell you, but rather division!

51 Do you think that I came to bring peace on earth? Not at all, I tell you, but rather division!

52 For from now on there will be a household of five persons divided [against one another], three against two and two against three.

52 for from now on five members in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three.

52 For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three.

52 From now on, five in one household will be divided: three against two, and two against three.

52 From now on, five people in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three.

53 And a father will be divided against his son and the son against his father; a mother [will be divided] against her daughter and the daughter against her mother; a mother-in-law [will be divided] against her daughter-in-law and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law."

53 They will be divided, (BC)father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”

53 The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.

53 They will be divided, father against son,son against father, mother against daughter, daughter against mother,mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law,and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.(CA)(o)

53 They will be divided father against son, son against father, mother against daughter, daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law, and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law."

The Signs Of The Times

54 And Jesus also said to the crowds, "When you see a cloud rising in the west, you immediately say, 'A rainstorm is coming up,' and sure enough, it does.

54 And He was also saying to the crowds, (BD)When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, ‘A shower is coming,’ and so it turns out.

54 And he said also to the people, When ye see a cloud rise out of the west, straightway ye say, There cometh a shower; and so it is.

54 He also said to the crowds:(CB) “When you see a cloud rising in the west, right away you say, ‘A storm is coming,’ and so it does.(CC)

54 Then Jesus told the crowds, "When you see a cloud coming in from the west, you immediately say, "There's going to be a storm,' and that's what happens.

55 And when there is a south wind blowing, you say, 'It is going to be a scorching day,' and sure enough, it is.

55 And when you see a south wind blowing, you say, ‘It will be a (BE)hot day,’ and it turns out that way.

55 And when ye see the south wind blow, ye say, There will be heat; and it cometh to pass.

55 And when the south wind is blowing, you say, ‘It’s going to be a scorcher!’ and it is.

55 When you see a south wind blowing, you say, "It's going to be hot,' and so it is.

56 You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky, but why do you not know how to interpret [events of] this present time?

56 You hypocrites! (BF)You know how to analyze the appearance of the earth and the sky, but (ab)why do you not analyze this present time?

56 Ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky and of the earth; but how is it that ye do not discern this time?

56 Hypocrites!(CD) You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky, but why don’t you know how to interpret this time?(CE)

56 You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky, yet you don't know how to interpret the present time?"

Settle Accounts Quickly

57 "And why do you not judge for yourselves what is right?

57 “And (BG)why do you not even on your own initiative judge what is right?

57 Yea, and why even of yourselves judge ye not what is right?

57 “Why don’t you judge for yourselves what is right?(CF)

57 "Why don't you judge for yourselves what is right?

58 And while you are on your way to court with your opponent, make every effort to be reconciled [to him] so that he does not drag you in front of the judge, and then the judge turns you over to the officer, and the officer throws you into prison.

58 For (BH)while you are going with your opponent to appear before the magistrate, on your way there make an effort to (ac)settle with him, so that he may not drag you before the judge, and the judge turn you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison.

58 When thou goest with thine adversary to the magistrate, as thou art in the way, give diligence that thou mayest be delivered from him; lest he hale thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and the officer cast thee into prison.

58 As you are going with your adversary(CG) to the ruler, make an effort to settle with him on the way. Then he won’t drag you before the judge,(CH) the judge hand you over to the bailiff, and the bailiff throw you into prison.(CI)

58 For example, when you go with your opponent in front of a ruler, do your best to settle with him on the way there. Otherwise, you will be dragged in front of the judge, and the judge will hand you over to an officer, and the officer will throw you into prison.

59 I tell you, you will not be released from there until you have paid the last coin [Note: This coin amounted to about five minutes of a farm laborer's pay, or about fifty cents in 1994]."

59 I say to you, you will not get out of there until you have paid the very last (ad)(BI)cent.”

59 I tell thee, thou shalt not depart thence, till thou hast paid the very last mite.

59 I tell you, you will never get out of there until you have paid the last cent.”(p)(CJ)

59 I tell you, you will never get out of there until you pay back the last penny!"
