Luke 23

¹ At length the whole assembly broke up, and Jesus was conducted to Pilate:

¹ And the whole multitude of them arose, and led him unto Pilate.

¹ Then the whole body of them got up and ^(A)brought Him before Pilate.

¹ Then^(A) their whole assembly rose up and brought Him before Pilate.

¹ Then the whole crowd got up and took him to Pilate.

³ then Pilate ask'd him, art thou the king of the Jews? Jesus answer'd him, 'tis as you say.

³ And Pilate asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answered him and said, Thou sayest it.

³ So Pilate asked Him, saying, “Are You the King of the Jews?” And He answered him and said, “^(E)It is as you say.”

³ So Pilate asked Him,^(C) “Are You the King of the Jews?”^(D)He answered him, “You have said it.”^(a)

³ Then Pilate asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" He answered, "You say so."

⁵ but they were the more vehement, saying, he promotes sedition by speading such doctrine thro' all Judea, from Galilee to this place.

⁵ And they were the more fierce, saying, He stirreth up the people, teaching throughout all Jewry, beginning from Galilee to this place.

⁵ But they kept on insisting, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching all over Judea, ^(G)starting from Galilee even as far as this place.”

⁵ But they kept insisting, “He stirs up the people,^(F) teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee^(G) where He started even to here.”

⁵ But they kept insisting, "He is stirring up the people with what he teaches all over Judea, from where he started in Galilee to this place."

⁷ and finding that he belong'd to Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who was then likewise at Jerusalem.

⁷ And as soon as he knew that he belonged unto Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who himself also was at Jerusalem at that time.

⁷ And when he learned that He belonged to Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him to ^(H)Herod, who himself also was in Jerusalem ^(b)at that time.

⁷ Finding that He was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod,^(I) who was also in Jerusalem during those days.

⁷ When he learned with certainty that Jesus came from Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him off to Herod, who was in Jerusalem at that time.

⁹ he plyed him therefore with many interrogatories,

⁹ Then he questioned with him in many words; but he answered him nothing.

⁹ And he questioned Him ^(d)at some length; but ^(J)He answered him nothing.

⁹ So he kept asking Him questions, but Jesus did not answer him.^(J)

⁹ So he continued to question him for a long time, but Jesus gave him no answer at all.

¹¹ then Herod and his retinue treated him with contempt, and in derision sent him back magnificently dress'd to Pilate.

¹¹ And Herod with his men of war set him at nought, and mocked him, and arrayed him in a gorgeous robe, and sent him again to Pilate.

¹¹ And Herod with his soldiers, after treating Him with contempt and mocking Him, ^(K)dressed Him in a gorgeous robe and sent Him back to Pilate.

¹¹ Then Herod, with his soldiers, treated Him with contempt, mocked^(K) Him, dressed Him in a brilliant robe,^(L) and sent Him back to Pilate.

¹¹ Even Herod and his soldiers treated him with contempt and made fun of him. He put a magnificent robe on Jesus and sent him back to Pilate.

¹³ Pilate having order'd the chief priests, the senators, and people to appear, he said to them,

¹³ And Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people,

¹³ Pilate summoned the chief priests and the ^(M)rulers and the people,

¹³ Pilate called together the chief priests, the leaders, and the people,^(N)

¹³ Then Pilate called the high priests, the other leaders, and the people together

¹⁵ for I referr'd you to him, and you see nothing that is capital, has been made out against him.

¹⁵ No, nor yet Herod: for I sent you to him; and, lo, nothing worthy of death is done unto him.

¹⁵ No, nor has ^(P)Herod, for he sent Him back to us; and behold, nothing deserving death has been done by Him.

¹⁵ Neither has Herod, because he sent Him back to us. Clearly, He has done nothing to deserve death.

¹⁵ Neither does Herod, because he sent him back to us! Indeed, this man has done nothing to deserve death.

¹⁷ now as it was customary for the governor to release one of the prisoners at the feast;

¹⁷ (For of necessity he must release one unto them at the feast.)

¹⁷ [^(e)Now he was obliged to release to them at the feast one prisoner.]

¹⁷ [For according to the festival he had to release someone to them.]^(f)(R)

¹⁷ Now he was obligated to release someone for them at the festival.

¹⁹ Barabbas had been imprison'd for murder in a riot he had rais'd in the city.

¹⁹ (Who for a certain sedition made in the city, and for murder, was cast into prison.)

¹⁹ (He was one who had been thrown into prison for an insurrection made in the city, and for murder.)

¹⁹ (He had been thrown into prison for a rebellion that had taken place in the city, and for murder.)

¹⁹ (This man had been put in prison for murder and for a revolt that had taken place in the city.)

²¹ but they cry'd out, crucify him, crucify him.

²¹ But they cried, saying, Crucify him, crucify him.

²¹ but they kept on calling out, saying, “Crucify, crucify Him!”

²¹ but they kept shouting, “Crucify! Crucify Him!”

²¹ but they continued to shout, "Crucify him! Crucify him!"

²³ but they persisted with great clamour in their demands, to have him crucified: and as the people and chief priests redoubled their clamours,

²³ And they were instant with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified. And the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed.

²³ But they were insistent, with loud voices asking that He be crucified. And their voices began to prevail.

²³ But they kept up the pressure, demanding with loud voices that He be crucified. And their voices^(g) won out.

²³ But they kept pressing him with loud shouts, demanding that Jesus be crucified, and their shouts began to prevail.

²⁵ accordingly he discharg'd the prisoner they desired, him that was committed for riot and murder; but he abandon'd Jesus to their discretion.

²⁵ And he released unto them him that for sedition and murder was cast into prison, whom they had desired; but he delivered Jesus to their will.

²⁵ And he released the man they were asking for who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, but he delivered Jesus to their will.

²⁵ and released the one they were asking for, who had been thrown into prison for rebellion and murder. But he handed Jesus over to their will.^(Z)

²⁵ So he released the man who had been put in prison for revolt and murder the man whose release they continued to demand but he let them have their way with Jesus.

²⁷ who was followed by a great crowd of people, and several women, who beat their breasts and lamented him.

²⁷ And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented him.

²⁷ And following Him was a large crowd of the people, and of women who were ^(f)(V)mourning and lamenting Him.

²⁷ A large crowd of people followed Him, including women who were mourning and lamenting Him.^(AD)

²⁷ A large crowd of people followed him, including some women who kept mourning and wailing for him.

²⁹ for now the time is coming, when it will be said, happy are the barren, and they who never bare, happy the breast, that never gave suck.

²⁹ For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck.

²⁹ For behold, the days are coming when they will say, ‘^(W)Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed.’

²⁹ Look, the days are coming^(AF) when they will say, ‘The women without children, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed, are fortunate!’^(AG)

²⁹ because the time is surely coming when people will say, "How blessed are the women who couldn't bear children and the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!'

³¹ for if the green wood burn thus, how will the dry wood flame?

³¹ For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry?

³¹ For if they do these things ^(g)when the tree is green, what will happen ^(h)when it is dry?”

³¹ For if they do these things when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?”^(AI)

³¹ And if they do this when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?"

³³ accordingly, when they came to the place call'd Calvary, they crucified him there, and the two malefactors; the one at his right, the other at his left.

³³ And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.

^{33 (Z)}When they came to the place called ⁽ⁱ⁾The Skull, there they crucified Him and the criminals, one on the right and the other on the left.

³⁵ while the people who stood looking on, and the senators themselves contemptuously said, he sav'd others; if he be Christ, the elect of God, let him save himself.

³⁵ And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God.

³⁵ And the people stood by, looking on. And even the ^(AC)rulers were sneering at Him, saying, “He saved others; ^(AD)let Him save Himself if this is the ^(k)Christ of God, His Chosen One.”

³⁵ The^(AP) people stood watching, and even the leaders kept scoffing:^(AQ) “He saved others; let Him save Himself if this is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One!”^(AR)

³⁵ Meanwhile, the people stood looking on. The leaders were mocking him by saying, "He saved others. Let him save himself, if he is the Messiah of God, the chosen one!"

³⁷ saying, if thou art the king of the Jews, save thy self.

³⁷ And saying, If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself.

³⁷ and saying, “^(AF)If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself!”

³⁷ and said, “If You are the King of the Jews,^(AT) save Yourself!”

³⁷ saying, "If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself!"

³⁹ Now one of the malefactors, that was crucified with him, impiously said, if thou art the Christ, save thy self, and us.

³⁹ And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us.

^{39 (AH)}One of the criminals who were hanged there was ^(l)hurling abuse at Him, saying, “Are You not the ^(m)Christ? ^(AI)Save Yourself and us!”

³⁹ Then^(AU) one of the criminals hanging there began to yell insults at^(k) Him: “Aren’t You the Messiah? Save Yourself and us!”

³⁹ Now one of the criminals hanging there kept insulting him, "You are the Messiah, aren't you? Save yourself"and us!"

⁴¹ as for us, it is with justice, that we suffer the penalty due to our crimes: but as for him, what misdemeanour has he been guilty of?

⁴¹ And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss.

⁴¹ And we indeed are suffering justly, for we are receiving ⁽ⁿ⁾what we deserve for our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.”

⁴¹ We are punished justly, because we’re getting back what we deserve for the things we did, but this man has done nothing wrong.”^(AW)

⁴¹ We have been condemned justly, because we are getting what we deserve for what we have done, but this man has done nothing wrong."

⁴³ Jesus answer'd, verily I tell you, this day thou shalt be with me in paradise.

⁴³ And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.

⁴³ And He said to him, “Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in ^(AJ)Paradise.”

⁴³ And He said to him, “I assure you: Today you will be with Me in paradise.”^(AZ)

⁴³ Jesus told him, "I tell you with certainty, today you will be with me in Paradise."

⁴⁵ the sun was obscured, and the veil of the temple was rent in two.

⁴⁵ And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst.

^{45 (s)}because the sun was obscured; and ^(AM)the veil of the temple was torn ^(t)in two.

⁴⁵ because the sun’s light failed.^(p) The curtain^(BB) of the sanctuary was split down the middle.

⁴⁵ because the sun had stopped shining, and the curtain in the sanctuary was torn in two.

⁴⁷ The centurion upon seeing what had happen'd, gave glory to God, and said, certainly this was a righteous man.

⁴⁷ Now when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man.

^{47 (AP)}Now when the centurion saw what had happened, he began ^(AQ)praising God, saying, “Certainly this man was ^(u)innocent.”

⁴⁷ When the centurion saw what happened, he began to glorify^(BD) God, saying, “This man really was righteous!”

⁴⁷ When the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God and said, "This man certainly was righteous!"

⁴⁹ As for his acquaintance, they all stood at a distance, with the women that followed him from Galilee, and were spectators during the whole transaction.

⁴⁹ And all his acquaintance, and the women that followed him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things.

^{49 (AS)}And all His acquaintances and ^(AT)the women who accompanied Him from Galilee were standing at a distance, seeing these things.

⁴⁹ But^(BF) all who knew Him, including the women who had followed Him from Galilee, stood at a distance,^(BG) watching these things.

⁴⁹ But all his acquaintances, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, were standing at a distance watching these things.

⁵¹ he was of Arimathea, a city of Judea, and one of those, who were in expectation of the Messiah's reign.

⁵¹ (The same had not consented to the counsel and deed of them;) he was of Arimathaea, a city of the Jews: who also himself waited for the kingdom of God.

⁵¹ (he had not consented to their plan and action), a man from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who was ^(AW)waiting for the kingdom of God;

⁵¹ who had not agreed with their plan^(BI) and action. He was from Arimathea, a Judean town, and was looking forward to the kingdom of God.^(BJ)

⁵¹ he had not voted for their plan and action from the Jewish town of Arimathea; and he was waiting for the kingdom of God.

⁵³ and he took it down, and wrapp'd it in linnen, and laid it in a sepulchre, hewn out of a rock, wherein nobody had ever yet been deposited.

⁵³ And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid.

⁵³ And he took it down and wrapped it in a linen cloth, and laid Him in a tomb cut into the rock, where no one had ever lain.
