1 Then he proceeded to address them in parables. "A man planted a vineyard, fenced it round, dug a trough for the winepress, and built a tower; then he leased it to vinedressers and went abroad.
1 (A)And He began to speak to them in parables: “(B)A man (C)planted a vineyard and put a (a)wall around it, and dug a vat under the wine press and built a tower, and rented it out to (b)vine-growers and went on a journey.

2 When the season came round he sent a servant to the vine dressers to collect from the vine dressers some of the produce of the vineyard,
2 At the harvest time he sent a slave to the vine-growers, in order to receive some of the produce of the vineyard from the vine-growers.
2 And at the season he sent to the husbandmen a servant, that he might receive from the husbandmen of the fruit of the vineyard.

8 So they took and killed him, and threw him outside the vineyard.

10 Have you not even read this scripture? ??The stone that the builders rejected is the chief stone now of the corner:

12 Then they tried to get hold of him, but they were afraid of the multitude. They knew he had meant the parable for them. So they left him and went away.
12 (F)And they were seeking to seize Him, and yet they feared the (d)people, for they understood that He spoke the parable against them. And so (G)they left Him and went away.
12 And they sought to lay hold on him, but feared the people: for they knew that he had spoken the parable against them: and they left him, and went their way.
12 Because they knew He had said this parable against them, they were looking for a way to arrest Him, but they were afraid of the crowd. So they left Him and went away.

13 But they sent some of the Pharisees and Herodians to him for the purpose of catching him with a question.

13 And they send unto him certain of the Pharisees and of the Herodians, to catch him in his words.

14 They came up and said to him, "Teacher, we know you are sincere and fearless; you do not court human favour, you teach the Way of God honestly. Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?
14 They *came and *said to Him, “Teacher, we know that You are truthful and (e)defer to no one; for You are not partial to any, but teach the way of God in truth. Is it (f)lawful to pay a poll-tax to Caesar, or not?
14 And when they were come, they say unto him, Master, we know that thou art true, and carest for no man: for thou regardest not the person of men, but teachest the way of God in truth: Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar, or not?
14 When they came, they said to Him, “Teacher, we know You are truthful and defer to no one, for You don’t show partiality(g)(S) but teach truthfully the way of God. Is it lawful to pay taxes(T) to Caesar or not?
14 They came and told him, "Teacher, we know that you are sincere. You don't favor any individual, because you pay no attention to external appearance. Rather, you teach the way of God truthfully. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not? Should we pay them or shouldn't we?"
15 Are we to pay, or are we not to pay?" But he saw their trick and said to them, "Why tempt me? Bring me a shilling. Let me see it."
15 Shall we pay or shall we not pay?” But He, knowing their hypocrisy, said to them, “Why are you testing Me? Bring Me a (g)denarius to look at.”
15 Shall we give, or shall we not give? But he, knowing their hypocrisy, said unto them, Why tempt ye me? bring me a penny, that I may see it.
15 Should we pay, or should we not pay?”But knowing their hypocrisy,(U) He said to them, “Why are you testing(V) Me? Bring Me a denarius(W) to look at.”
15 Seeing through their hypocrisy, Jesus replied to them, "Why are you testing me? Bring me a denarius and let me look at it."
16 So they brought one. He said, "Whose likeness, whose inscription is this?" "Caesar's," they said.
16 They brought one. And He *said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” And they said to Him, “Caesar’s.”
16 And they brought it. And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription? And they said unto him, Caesar's.

16 So they brought one. Then he asked them, "Whose face and name are on this?" They told him, "Caesar's."
17 Jesus said to them, "Give Caesar what belongs to Caesar, give God what belongs to God." He astonished them.
17 And Jesus said to them, “(K)Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” And they (h)were amazed at Him.
17 And Jesus answering said unto them, Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's. And they marvelled at him.

18 Sadducees, men who hold there is no resurrection, also came up and put a question to him.
18 (L)Some Sadducees (who say that there is no resurrection) *came to Jesus, and began questioning Him, saying,

19 "Teacher," they said, "Moses has written this law for us, that if a man's brother dies leaving a wife but no child, his brother is to take the woman and raise offspring for his brother.
19 “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that (M)if a man’s brother dies and leaves behind a wife and leaves no child, his brother should (i)marry the wife and raise up children to his brother.
19 Master, Moses wrote unto us, If a man's brother die, and leave his wife behind him, and leave no children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.
19 “Teacher,(AE) Moses(AF) wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies, leaves his wife behind, and leaves no child,(AG) his brother should take the wife(AH) and produce offspring for his brother.(AI)(h)
19 "Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies and leaves a wife but no child, he should marry the widow and have children for his brother.
20 Now there were seven brothers. The first married a wife and died leaving no offspring:

24 Jesus said to them, "Is this not where you go wrong? ??you understand neither the scriptures nor the power of God.
24 Jesus said to them, “Is this not the reason you are mistaken, that you do not (n)understand the Scriptures or the power of God?
24 And Jesus answering said unto them, Do ye not therefore err, because ye know not the scriptures, neither the power of God?

24 Jesus answered them, "Aren't you mistaken because you don't know the Scriptures or God's power?
25 When people rise from the dead they neither marry nor are married, they are like the angels in heaven.
25 For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.

26 As for the dead being raised, have you not read in the book of Moses, at the passage on the Bush, how God said to him, I am the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob?
26 But (o)regarding the fact that the dead rise again, have you not read in the book of Moses, (N)in the passage about the burning bush, how God spoke to him, saying, ‘(O)I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’?
26 And as touching the dead, that they rise: have ye not read in the book of Moses, how in the bush God spake unto him, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?
26 Now concerning the dead being raised—haven’t you read in the book of Moses, in the passage about the burning bush, how God spoke to him: I(AQ) am the God of Abraham(AR) and the God of Isaac(AS) and the God of Jacob?(AT)(l)

27 He is not the God of dead people but of living. You are far wrong."

28 Then a scribe came up, who had listened to the discussion. Knowing Jesus had given them an apt answer, he put this question to him, "What is the chief of all the commands?"
28 (Q)One of the scribes came and heard them arguing, and (R)recognizing that He had answered them well, asked Him, “What commandment is the (q)foremost of all?”
28 And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all?
28 One(AU) of the scribes(AV) approached. When he heard them debating and saw that Jesus answered them well, he asked Him, “Which command is the most important of all?”(m)
28 Then one of the scribes came near and heard the Sadducees arguing with one another. He saw how well Jesus answered them, so he asked him, "Which commandment is the most important of them all?"
29 Jesus replied, "The chief one is: Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord,
29 And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:
29 “This is the most important,”(n) Jesus answered:Listen, Israel! The Lord(AW) our God, the Lord(AX) is One.(o)
29 Jesus answered, "The most important is, "Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord,
30 and you must love the Lord your God with your whole heart, with your whole soul, with your whole mind, and with your whole strength.
30 (T)and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’
30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.

33 (W)and to love Him with all the heart and with all the understanding and with all the strength, and to love one’s neighbor as himself, (X)is much more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.”
33 And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.

34 Jesus noted his intelligent answer and said to him, "You are not far off the Realm of God." After that no one ventured to put any more questions to him.

34 And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after that durst ask him any question.

35 And Jesus answered and said, while he taught in the temple, How say the scribes that Christ is the Son of David?

35 While Jesus was teaching in the Temple, he asked, "How can the scribes say that the Messiah is David's son?
36 David himself said in the holy Spirit, The Lord said to my Lord, 'Sit at my right hand, till I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.'
36 David himself said (s)in the Holy Spirit,‘(AC)The Lord said to my Lord,“Sit at My right hand,Until I put Your enemies beneath Your feet.”’
36 For David himself said by the Holy Ghost, The LORD said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool.

37 David here calls him Lord. Then how can he be his son?" Now the mass of the people listened with delight to him.
37 David himself calls Him ‘Lord’; so in what sense is He his son?” And (AD)the large crowd (t)enjoyed listening to Him.
37 David therefore himself calleth him Lord; and whence is he then his son? And the common people heard him gladly.

38 And in the course of his teaching he said, "Beware of the scribes! They like to walk about in long robes, to get saluted in the marketplaces,
38 (AE)In His teaching He was saying: “Beware of the scribes who like to walk around in long robes, and like (AF)respectful greetings in the market places,
38 And he said unto them in his doctrine, Beware of the scribes, which love to go in long clothing, and love salutations in the marketplaces,
38 He(BV) also said in His teaching, “Beware of the scribes, who want to go around in long robes,(BW) and who want greetings in the marketplaces,(BX)
38 As he taught, he said, "Beware of the scribes! They like to walk around in long robes, to be greeted in the marketplaces,
39 to secure the front seats in the synagogues and the best places at banquets;
39 and chief seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets,
39 And the chief seats in the synagogues, and the uppermost rooms at feasts:
39 and to have the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.
40 they prey upon the property of widows and offer long unreal prayers. All the heavier will their sentence be!"
40 (AG)who devour widows’ houses, and for appearance’s sake offer long prayers; these will receive greater condemnation.”
40 Which devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayers: these shall receive greater damnation.
40 They devour(CC) widows’(CD) houses and say long prayers(CE) just for show. These will receive harsher punishment.”

41 Sitting down opposite the treasury, he watched the people putting their money into the treasury. A number of the rich were putting in large sums,
41 (AH)And He sat down opposite (AI)the treasury, and began observing how the people were (AJ)putting (u)money into the treasury; and many rich people were putting in large sums.
41 And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much.
41 Sitting(CF) across from the temple treasury,(CG) He watched how the crowd dropped money into the treasury. Many rich(CH) people were putting in large sums.
41 As Jesus sat facing the offering box, he watched how the crowd was dropping their money into it. Many rich people were dropping in large amounts.
43 And he called his disciples and said to them, "I tell you truly, this poor widow has put in more than all who have put their money into the treasury;
43 Calling His disciples to Him, He said to them, “Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all (x)the contributors to the treasury;
43 And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury:
43 Summoning His disciples,(CJ) He said to them, “I assure you:(CK) This poor widow has put in more than all those giving to the temple treasury.(CL)
43 He called his disciples and told them, "I tell all of you with certainty, this destitute widow has dropped in more than everyone who is contributing to the offering box,
44 for they have all put in a contribution out of their surplus, but she has given out of her neediness all she possessed, her whole living."
44 for they all put in out of their (y)surplus, but she, out of her poverty, put in all she owned, (z)all she had (AK)to live on.”
44 For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.
