1 And Jesus said to them, "Truly I tell you, there are some people standing here who will surely not experience death until they see that God's kingdom has come in [a demonstration of] power."

1 And Jesus was saying to them, (A)Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God after it has come with power.”

1 And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That there be some of them that stand here, which shall not taste of death, till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power.

1 Then He said to them, “I assure you:(A) There are some standing here who will not taste death(B) until they see the kingdom of God come in power.”(C)

1 Six days later, Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain to be alone with him. His appearance was changed in front of them,

The Transfiguration

2 And after six days had passed, Jesus took Peter, James and John aside alone and went up to a high mountain [i.e., probably Mt. Tabor, which was nearby]. [There] His whole appearance was [miraculously] changed in front of them.

2 (B)Six days later, Jesus *took with Him (C)Peter and (a)James and John, and *brought them up on a high mountain by themselves. And He was transfigured before them;

3 Then Elijah appeared to them, accompanied by Moses, and they were talking with Jesus.

4 Then Elijah, along with Moses, appeared to them and they were talking with Jesus.

4 Then Peter told Jesus, "Rabbi, it's good that we're here! Let's set up three shelters one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah."

5 And Peter said to Jesus, "Rabbi [i.e., Teacher], it is good for us to be here. Let us build three small shelters, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah." [See note at Matt. 17:4]

5 Peter *said to Jesus, “(E)Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; (F)let us make three (b)tabernacles, one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”

5 And Peter answered and said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.

5 Then Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi,(N) it’s good(O) for us to be here! Let us make three tabernacles:(P) one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah”—

5 (Peter didn't know how to respond, because they were terrified.)

6 For he did not know what to say, because they [all] became very afraid.

6 For he did not know what to answer; for they became terrified.

6 Then a cloud appeared and overshadowed them. A voice came out of the cloud and said, "This is my Son, whom I love. Keep on listening to him!"

7 [Just then] a cloud engulfed them and a voice spoke out of the cloud saying, "This is my dearly loved Son, listen to Him."

7 Then a cloud (c)formed, overshadowing them, and (G)a voice (d)came out of the cloud, “(H)This is My beloved Son, (e)listen to Him!”

7 And there was a cloud that overshadowed them: and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.

7 Suddenly, as they looked around, they saw no one with them but Jesus alone.

8 And suddenly they looked all around them, but the only one they saw with them was Jesus.

8 All at once they looked around and saw no one with them anymore, except Jesus alone.

8 And suddenly, when they had looked round about, they saw no man any more, save Jesus only with themselves.

8 Then suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus alone.

8 On their way down the mountain, Jesus ordered them not to tell anyone what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.

9 And as they were coming down from the mountain Jesus ordered His disciples not to tell anyone what they had seen until [after] the Son of man was raised again from the dead.

11 Then His disciples asked Him, "Why is it, [since you are obviously the Messiah], that the experts in the law of Moses say that Elijah must come first?"

11 And they asked him, saying, Why say the scribes that Elias must first come?

11 Then they began to question Him, “Why do the scribes(AG) say that Elijah must come first?”(AH)

11 He told them, "Elijah is indeed coming first and will restore all things. Why, then, is it written that the Son of Man must suffer a great deal and be treated shamefully?

12 Jesus answered them, "Elijah truly will come first and restore all things [i.e., to their proper perspective concerning the Messiah]. And it is [also] written [in the Scriptures] about the Son of man, that He would suffer very much and be rejected.

12 And He said to them, “Elijah does first come and restore all things. And yet how is it written of (L)the Son of Man that (M)He will suffer many things and be treated with contempt?

12 And he answered and told them, Elias verily cometh first, and restoreth all things; and how it is written of the Son of man, that he must suffer many things, and be set at nought.

12 “Elijah does come first and restores(AI) everything,”(AJ) He replied. “How then is it written(AK) about the Son of Man that He must suffer(AL) many things and be treated with contempt?(AM)

12 But I tell you that Elijah has come, yet people treated him just as they pleased, as it is written about him."

13 But I tell you, Elijah has [already] come, and they did to him what they wanted to, just like it was written about him [in the Scriptures]."

13 But I say to you that Elijah has (j)indeed come, and they did to him whatever they wished, just as it is written of him.”

13 But I say unto you, That Elias is indeed come, and they have done unto him whatsoever they listed, as it is written of him.

13 As they approached the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and some scribes arguing with them.

A Demon-Possessed Boy Healed

14 And when Peter, James and John [See verse 2] returned to [the rest of] the disciples, they saw a large crowd gathered around them, and the experts in the law of Moses disputing with them.

14 (N)When they came back to the disciples, they saw a large crowd around them, and some scribes arguing with them.

14 And when he came to his disciples, he saw a great multitude about them, and the scribes questioning with them.

14 When(AO) they came to the disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and scribes disputing(AP) with them.

14 The whole crowd was very surprised to see Jesus and ran to welcome him.

15 And immediately, upon seeing Jesus, the entire crowd ran to greet Him in great amazement [i.e., possibly over His sudden appearance].

15 Immediately, when the entire crowd saw Him, they were (O)amazed and began running up to greet Him.

15 And straightway all the people, when they beheld him, were greatly amazed, and running to him saluted him.

15 All of a sudden, when the whole crowd saw Him, they were amazed(b) and ran to greet Him.

15 He asked the scribes, "What are you arguing about with them?"

16 And He asked the crowd, "What are you arguing about with my disciples?"

16 And He asked them, “What are you discussing with them?”

16 And he asked the scribes, What question ye with them?

16 Then He asked them, “What are you arguing with them about?”

16 A man in the crowd answered him, "Teacher, I brought my son to you. He has a spirit that won't let him talk.

17 And someone in the crowd answered Him, "Teacher, I brought to you my son, who is dominated by a spirit which causes him to be a mute.

17 And one of the crowd answered Him, “Teacher, I brought You my son, possessed with a spirit which makes him mute;

17 And one of the multitude answered and said, Master, I have brought unto thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit;

17 Out of the crowd, one man answered Him, “Teacher,(AQ) I brought my son to You. He has a spirit(AR) that makes him unable to speak.(AS)

17 Whenever it brings on a seizure, it throws him to the ground. Then he foams at the mouth, grinds his teeth, and becomes stiff. So I asked your disciples to drive the spirit out, but they didn't have the power."

18 Wherever it seizes him, it throws him down and he foams at the mouth, grinds his teeth and stiffens out. I spoke to your disciples, asking them to drive it out, but they were not able to."

18 and (k)whenever it seizes him, it (l)slams him to the ground and he foams at the mouth, and grinds his teeth and (m)stiffens out. I told Your disciples to cast it out, and they could not do it.”

18 And wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him: and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out; and they could not.

18 Wherever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams at the mouth, grinds his teeth, and becomes rigid. So I asked Your disciples to drive it out, but they couldn’t.”

18 Jesus told them, "You unbelieving generation! How long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring him to me!"

19 Jesus said to them, "You generation of faithless people How long must I be with you [i.e., before you understand]? How long do I have to be patient with you? Bring the sick boy to me."

19 And He *answered them and *said, “O unbelieving generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring him to Me!”

19 He answereth him, and saith, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto me.

19 He replied to them, “You unbelieving(AT) generation! How long will I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring him to Me.”

19 So they brought the boy to him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into convulsions. He fell on the ground and kept rolling around and foaming at the mouth.

20 Then they [i.e., some people from the crowd] brought the sick boy to Jesus, and when the spirit saw Him, it immediately caused the boy to have convulsions and to fall to the ground and roll around, foaming at the mouth.

20 They brought (n)the boy to Him. When he saw Him, immediately the spirit threw him into a convulsion, and falling to the ground, he began rolling around and foaming at the mouth.

20 And they brought him unto him: and when he saw him, straightway the spirit tare him; and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming.

20 So they brought him to Him. When the spirit saw Him, it immediately convulsed the boy. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth.

20 Then Jesus asked his father, "How long has this been happening to him?" He said, "Since he was a child.

21 Jesus asked the boy's father, "How long has this been happening to him?" And he answered, "Since he was a small child.

21 And He asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood.

21 And he asked his father, How long is it ago since this came unto him? And he said, Of a child.

21 “How long has this been happening to him?” Jesus asked his father.“From childhood,” he said.

21 The spirit has often thrown him into fire and into water to destroy him. But if you are able to do anything, have pity on us and help us!"

22 And frequently the evil spirit has tried to kill him, throwing him into a fire or into the water. But if you can do anything [for him], have pity on us and help us."

22 It has often thrown him both into the fire and into the water to destroy him. But if You can do anything, take pity on us and help us!”

22 And ofttimes it hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him: but if thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us.

22 Jesus told him, ""If you are able?' Everything is possible for the person who believes!"

23 And Jesus said to him, "'If you can.' [Note: By repeating the man's words Jesus seems to be saying, "You mean, if YOU can believe"]. Everything is possible to the person who believes [it can happen]."

23 And Jesus said to him, “‘If You can?’ (P)All things are possible to him who believes.”

23 Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.

23 Then Jesus said to him, “‘If You can’?(c)(d) Everything is possible(AW) to the one who believes.”(AX)

23 With tears flowing, the child's father at once cried out, "I do believe! Help my unbelief!"

24 Immediately the father of the boy cried out, "I do believe; help me to have more faith."

24 Immediately the boy’s father cried out and said, “I do believe; help my unbelief.”

24 And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.

24 Immediately the father of the boy cried out, “I do believe! Help my unbelief.”

24 When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, "You spirit that won't let him talk or hear I command you to come out of him and never enter him again!"

25 When Jesus saw a crowd running together [toward Him], He spoke sternly to the evil spirit [in the boy], saying to it, "You deaf-mute spirit, I order you to come out of this boy and to never return to him again."

25 When Jesus saw that (Q)a crowd was (o)rapidly gathering, He rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You deaf and mute spirit, I (p)command you, come out of him and do not enter him (q)again.”

25 When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him.

25 When Jesus saw that a crowd was rapidly coming together, He rebuked(AY) the unclean(AZ) spirit, saying to it, “You mute and deaf(BA) spirit,(e) I command you: come out of him and never enter him again!”

25 The spirit screamed, shook the child violently, and came out. The boy was like a corpse, and many said that he was dead.

26 The spirit shrieked and caused violent convulsions [in the boy], then came out of him. The boy appeared to be dead, so that most of the people were saying, "He is dead."

26 After crying out and throwing him into terrible convulsions, it came out; and the boy became so much like a corpse that most of them said, “He is dead!”

26 And the spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him: and he was as one dead; insomuch that many said, He is dead.

26 Then it came out, shrieking and convulsing(BB) him(f) violently. The boy became like a corpse, so that many said, “He’s dead.”

26 But Jesus took his hand and helped him up, and he stood up.

27 But Jesus grasped his hand and lifted him up, and he arose [fully healed].

27 When Jesus came home, his disciples asked him privately, "Why couldn't we drive the spirit out?"

28 And when Jesus had come into a house, His disciples asked Him privately, "Why could we not drive out the evil spirit [from that boy]?"

28 When He came (R)into the house, His disciples began questioning Him privately, “Why could we not drive it out?”

28 And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could not we cast him out?

28 After He went into a house, His disciples asked Him privately, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”

28 He told them, "This kind can come out only by prayer and fasting."

29 He answered them, "This kind [of spirit] cannot be driven out except by praying."

29 And He said to them, “This kind cannot come out by anything but prayer.”

29 And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.

29 And He told them, “This kind can come out by nothing but prayer(BD) [and fasting].”(g)(BE)

29 Then they left that place and passed through Galilee. Jesus didn't want anyone to find out about it,

Jesus Predicts His Death And Resurrection A Second Time

30 So, they left there and traveled through Galilee, but Jesus did not want anyone to know about it.

30 (S)From there they went out and began to go through Galilee, and He did not want anyone to know about it.

30 And they departed thence, and passed through Galilee; and he would not that any man should know it.

30 Then(BF) they left that place and made their way through Galilee, but He did not want anyone to know it.(BG)

30 because he was teaching his disciples, "The Son of Man will be betrayed into human hands. They will kill him, but after being dead for three days he will be raised."

31 For He taught His disciples, saying to them, "The Son of man will be handed over to [evil] men and they will kill Him, and three days after He dies He will rise up again."

31 For He was teaching His disciples and telling them, (T)The Son of Man is to be (r)delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill Him; and when He has been killed, He will rise three days later.”

31 For he taught his disciples, and said unto them, The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill him; and after that he is killed, he shall rise the third day.

31 For He was teaching(BH) His disciples and telling them, “The Son of Man(BI) is being betrayed(h) into the hands of men. They will kill Him, and after He is killed, He will rise(BJ) three days later.”(BK)

The Question About Who Is Greatest

33 Then Jesus and His disciples came to Capernaum [Note: This city on the northwest shore of Lake Galilee had become sort of a headquarters for Jesus when He was in this region]. When He [and His disciples] entered a house He asked them, "What were you discussing on the way here?"

33 (V)They came to Capernaum; and when He (t)was in (W)the house, He began to question them, “What were you discussing on the way?”

33 And he came to Capernaum: and being in the house he asked them, What was it that ye disputed among yourselves by the way?

33 Then(BM) they came to Capernaum.(BN) When He was in the house,(BO) He asked them, “What were you arguing about on the way?”(BP)

33 But they kept silent, because they had argued on the road with one another about who was the greatest.

34 But they kept quiet for they had been arguing with one another over which one of them was the greatest.

37 Whosoever shall receive one of such children in my name, receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me, receiveth not me, but him that sent me.

37 John told Jesus, "Teacher, we saw someone driving out demons in your name. We tried to stop him, because he wasn't a follower like us."

Whoever Is Not Against Us Is For Us

38 [Then] John [the apostle] said to Him, "Teacher, we saw someone driving out evil spirits by using your name, so we told him to stop doing it, because he was not following [You] with us."

38 (AA)John said to Him, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name, and (AB)we tried to prevent him because he was not following us.”

38 And John answered him, saying, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, and he followeth not us: and we forbad him, because he followeth not us.

38 John(BY) said to Him, “Teacher,(BZ) we saw someone(j) driving out demons(CA) in Your name,(CB) and we tried to stop him because he wasn’t following us.”(CC)

38 But Jesus said, "Don't stop him, because no one who works a miracle in my name can slander me soon afterwards.

39 But Jesus said, "Do not try to stop him, for there is not anyone who performs a supernatural deed using my name who will be able to quickly say something bad about me.

39 But Jesus said, “Do not hinder him, for there is no one who will perform a miracle in My name, and be able soon afterward to speak evil of Me.

39 But Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me.

39 “Don’t stop him,” said Jesus, “because there is no one who will perform a miracle(CD) in My name who can soon afterward speak evil of Me.

39 Whoever is not against us is for us.

40 For the person who is not against us is for us.

40 I tell all of you with certainty, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to the Messiah will never lose his reward."

41 Truly I tell you, whoever will give you [even] a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ will certainly not lose his [temporal or eternal] reward.

41 For (AD)whoever gives you a cup of water to drink (y)because of your name as followers of Christ, truly I say to you, he will not lose his reward.

41 For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward.

41 And whoever gives you a cup of water to drink(CF) because of My name,(k) since you belong to the Messiah(CG)—I assure you:(CH) He will never lose his reward.(CI)

41 "If anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him if a large millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea.

Temptations To Sin

42 And whoever causes one of these little ones [i.e., humble followers of the Lord. See Matt. 18:6] who believes in me to be led astray [from God], he would have been better off to have had a huge millstone tied around his neck and thrown into the ocean [Note: This was a heavy, circular stone rolled over grain to crush it, and moved by an animal walking in a circle].

42 (AE)Whoever causes one of these (z)little ones who believe to stumble, it (aa)would be better for him if, with a heavy millstone hung around his neck, he (ab)had been cast into the sea.

42 And whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that believe in me, it is better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea.

42 “But whoever causes the downfall of one of these little ones who believe in Me(CJ)—it would be better for him if a heavy millstone(l)(CK) were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea.

42 So if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It's better for you to enter life injured than to have two hands and go to hell, to the fire that cannot be put out.

43 And if your hand becomes the occasion for falling away [from God], cut it off; it would be better for you to enter [never ending] life disabled, rather than keeping both hands and going to hell, into the fire that cannot be put out [i.e., all because it caused you to fall away from God]. {{Verse

45 If your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life lame, than, having your two feet, to be cast into (ae)(AI)hell,

49 Salt is good. But if salt loses its taste, how can you restore its flavor? Keep on having salt among yourselves, and live in peace with one another."

50 For in hell the worm of those who are there will never die [i.e., their gnawing punishment will never cease] and the fire [there] will never go out.

50 Salt is good; but (AN)if the salt becomes unsalty, with what will you (ah)make it salty again? (AO)Have salt in yourselves, and (AP)be at peace with one another.”

51 For everyone will be salted with fire. [Note: This meant either the suffering "salt" of fiery trials (the sacrifices of verses 43-47 or the punishing "salt" of being thrown into a fiery hell (verse 45-48)].

52 "Salt is good, but if it loses its salty flavor, what will you use to restore it? [i.e., it is difficult to restore the "salt" of sacrificial commitment to God once it is lost]. You should have salt in yourselves [i.e., develop the qualities of preserving, purifying commitment to God], and live peacefully with one another [i.e., instead of in rivalry. See 9:33-34].
