John The Baptist Begins His Ministry

⁵ Then Jerusalem and all Judaea went out to him, and all the people from near Jordan; ⁶ And they were given baptism by him in the river Jordan, saying openly that they had done wrong. ⁷ But when he saw a number of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, Offspring of snakes, at whose word are you going in flight from the wrath to come?

And baptism, of which this is an image, now gives you salvation, not by washing clean the flesh, but by making you free from the sense of sin before God, through the coming again of Jesus Christ from the dead;

1 John 1:9

If we say openly that we have done wrong, he is upright and true to his word, giving us forgiveness of sins and making us clean from all evil.
