A Paralytic Healed

1 And Jesus, getting into a boat, crossed over the Sea of Galilee and came to [Capernaum] His own city.

1 And he entered into a ship, and passed over, and came into his own city.

1 Getting into a boat, Jesus crossed over the sea and came to (A)His own city.

1 So He got into a boat, crossed over, and came to His own town.(A)

1 After getting into a boat, Jesus crossed to the other side and came to his own city.

2 They brought to Him a man who was paralyzed, lying on a stretcher. Seeing their [active] faith [springing from confidence in Him], Jesus said to the paralytic, “Do not be afraid, son; your sins are forgiven [the penalty is paid, the guilt removed, and you are declared to be in right standing with God].”(A)

2 And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee.

2 (B)And they brought to Him a (C)paralytic lying on a bed. Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralytic, (D)Take courage, (a)son; (E)your sins are forgiven.”

2 Just then(B) some men(a) brought to Him a paralytic lying on a mat. Seeing their faith, Jesus told the paralytic, “Have courage, son, your sins are forgiven.”(C)

2 All at once some people brought him a paralyzed man lying on a stretcher. When Jesus saw their faith, he told the paralyzed man, "Be courageous, son! Your sins are forgiven."

3 And some of the scribes said to themselves, “This man blasphemes [by claiming the rights and prerogatives of God]!”

3 And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemeth.

3 And some of the scribes said (b)to themselves, “This fellow (F)blasphemes.”

3 At this, some of the scribes said among themselves, “He’s blaspheming!”(D)

3 Then some of the scribes told themselves, "This fellow is blaspheming!"

4 But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts?

4 And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts?

4 And Jesus (G)knowing their thoughts said, “Why are you thinking evil in your hearts?

4 But perceiving their thoughts,(E) Jesus said, “Why are you thinking evil things in your hearts?(b)

4 But Jesus, knowing what they were thinking, replied, "Why do you have such evil thoughts in your hearts?

5 For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven and the penalty paid,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? [Both are possible for God; both are impossible for man.]

5 For whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk?

5 Which is easier, to say, ‘(H)Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, and walk’?

5 For which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’?

5 Which is easier: to say, "Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, "Get up and walk'?

6 But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority and the power on earth to forgive sins”—then He said to the paralytic, “Get up, pick up your stretcher and go home.”

6 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house.

6 But so that you may know that (I)the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—then He *said to the (J)paralytic, “Get up, pick up your bed and go home.”

6 But so you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—then He told the paralytic, “Get up, pick up your mat, and go home.”

6 But so you will know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins"" he told the paralyzed man, "Get up, pick up your stretcher, and go home!"

7 And he got up and went home [healed and forgiven].

7 And he arose, and departed to his house.

7 And he got up and (c)went home.

7 And he got up and went home.

7 So the man got up and went home.

8 When the crowds saw this, they were awestruck, and glorified God and praised Him, who had given such authority and power to men.

8 But when the multitudes saw it, they marvelled, and glorified God, which had given such power unto men.

8 But when the crowds saw this, they were (d)awestruck, and (K)glorified God, who had given such authority to men.

8 When the crowds saw this, they were awestruck(c)(d) and gave glory(F) to God who had given such authority to men.

8 When the crowds saw this, they became frightened and glorified God for giving such authority to humans.

Matthew Called To Follow Jesus

9 As Jesus went on from there, He saw a man named Matthew (Levi) sitting in the tax collector’s booth; and He said to him, “Follow Me [as My disciple, accepting Me as your Master and Teacher and walking the same path of life that I walk].” And Matthew got up and followed Him.(B)

9 And as Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him.

9 (L)As Jesus went on from there, He saw a man called (M)Matthew, sitting in the tax collector’s booth; and He *said to him, (N)Follow Me!” And he got up and followed Him.

9 As Jesus went on from there,(G) He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax office, and He said to him, “Follow Me!” So he got up and followed Him.(H)

9 As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector's desk and told him, "Follow me." So he got up and followed him.

10 Then as Jesus was reclining at the table in Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and (a)sinners [including non-observant Jews] came and ate with Him and His disciples.

10 And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples.

10 Then it happened that as (e)Jesus was reclining at the table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and (f)sinners came and were dining with Jesus and His disciples.

10 While He was reclining at the table in the house, many tax collectors and sinners came as guests to eat(e) with Jesus and His disciples.(I)

10 While he was having dinner at Matthew's home, many tax collectors and sinners arrived and began eating with Jesus and his disciples.

11 When the Pharisees saw this, they asked His disciples, “Why does your Master eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

11 And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners?

11 When the Pharisees saw this, they said to His disciples, “(O)Why is your Teacher eating with the tax collectors and sinners?”

11 When the Pharisees saw this, they asked His disciples, “Why does your Teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”(J)

11 The Pharisees saw this and asked his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?"

12 But when Jesus heard this, He said, “Those who are healthy have no need for a physician, but [only] those who are sick.

12 But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick.

12 But when Jesus heard this, He said, “It is not (P)those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick.

12 But when He heard this, He said, “Those who are well don’t need a doctor, but the sick do.(K)

12 When Jesus heard that, he said, "Healthy people don't need a physician, but sick people do.

13 Go and learn what this [Scripture] means: ‘I desire compassion [for those in distress], and not [animal] sacrifice,’ for I did not come to call [to repentance] the [self-proclaimed] righteous [who see no need to change], but sinners [those who recognize their sin and actively seek forgiveness].”(C)

13 But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

13 But go and learn (g)(Q)what this means: ‘(R)I desire (h)compassion, (i)and not sacrifice,’ for (S)I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

13 Go and learn what this means: I desire mercy and not sacrifice.(L)(f) For I didn’t come to call the righteous, but sinners.”(g)

13 Go and learn what this means: "I want mercy and not sacrifice,' because I did not come to call righteous people, but sinners."

On Fasting

14 Then the disciples of John [the Baptist] came to Jesus, asking, “Why do we and the Pharisees often fast [as a religious exercise], but Your disciples do not fast?”

14 Then came to him the disciples of John, saying, Why do we and the Pharisees fast oft, but thy disciples fast not?

14 Then the disciples of John *came to Him, asking, “Why do we and (T)the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?”

14 Then John’s disciples came to Him, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but Your disciples do not fast?”(M)

14 Then John's disciples came to Jesus and asked, "Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples don't fast?"

15 And Jesus replied to them, “Can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.

15 And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? but the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then shall they fast.

15 And Jesus said to them, “The (j)attendants of the bridegroom cannot mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them, can they? But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.

15 Jesus said to them, “Can the wedding guests(h) be sad while the groom is with them? The time(i) will come when the groom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.

15 Jesus asked them, "The wedding guests can't mourn as long as the groom is with them, can they? But the time will come when the groom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast."

16 But no one puts a piece of unshrunk (new) cloth on an old garment; for the patch pulls away from the garment, and a worse tear results.

16 No man putteth a piece of new cloth unto an old garment, for that which is put in to fill it up taketh from the garment, and the rent is made worse.

16 But no one puts (k)a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; for (l)the patch pulls away from the garment, and a worse tear results.

16 No one patches an old garment with unshrunk cloth, because the patch pulls away from the garment and makes the tear worse.

16 "No one patches an old garment with a piece of unshrunk cloth, because the patch pulls away from the garment, and a worse tear results.

17 Nor is new wine put into old (b)wineskins [that have lost their elasticity]; otherwise the wineskins burst, and the [fermenting] wine spills and the wineskins are ruined. But new wine is put into fresh wineskins, so both are preserved.”

17 Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved.

17 Nor do people put new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wineskins burst, and the wine pours out and the wineskins are ruined; but they put new wine into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved.”

17 And no one puts(j) new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the skins burst, the wine spills out, and the skins are ruined. But they put new wine into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved.”

17 Nor do people pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst, the wine will spill out, and the skins will be ruined. Instead, they pour new wine into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved."

A Woman Healed And A Daughter Raised

18 While He was saying these things to them, a ruler (synagogue official) entered [the house] and kneeled down and worshiped Him, saying, “My daughter has just now died; but come and lay Your hand on her, and she will live.”(D)

18 While he spake these things unto them, behold, there came a certain ruler, and worshipped him, saying, My daughter is even now dead: but come and lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live.

18 (U)While He was saying these things to them, (m)a synagogue (n)official came and (o)(V)bowed down before Him, and said, “My daughter has just died; but come and lay Your hand on her, and she will live.”

18 As He was telling them these things,(N) suddenly one of the leaders(k) came and knelt down before Him, saying, “My daughter is near death,(l) but come and lay Your hand on her, and she will live.”(O)

18 While Jesus was telling them these things, an official came up and fell down before him. "My daughter has just died," he said. "But come and lay your hand on her, and she will live."

19 Jesus got up and began to accompany the ruler, with His disciples.

19 And Jesus arose, and followed him, and so did his disciples.

19 Jesus got up and began to follow him, and so did His disciples.

19 So Jesus and His disciples got up and followed(P) him.

19 So Jesus got up and followed him, along with his disciples.

20 Then a woman who had suffered from a hemorrhage for twelve years came up behind Him and touched the [tassel] fringe of His outer robe;(E)

20 And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment:

20 And a woman who had been suffering from a hemorrhage for twelve years, came up behind Him and touched (W)the (p)fringe of His (q)cloak;

20 Just then, a woman who had suffered from bleeding for 12 years approached from behind and touched the tassel on His robe,(Q)

20 Just then a woman who had been suffering from chronic bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and touched the tassel of his garment,

21 for she had been saying to herself, “If I only touch His outer robe, I will be healed.”

21 For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole.

21 for she was saying (r)to herself, “If I only (X)touch His garment, I will (s)get well.”

21 for she said to herself, “If I can just touch His robe, I’ll be made well!”(m)(R)

21 because she had been saying to herself, "If I just touch his robe, I will get well."

22 But Jesus turning and seeing her said, “Take courage, daughter; your [personal trust and confident] faith [in Me] has made you well.” And at once the woman was [completely] healed.

22 But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour.

22 But Jesus turning and seeing her said, “Daughter, (Y)take courage; (Z)your faith has (t)made you well.” (u)At once the woman was (v)made well.

22 But Jesus turned and saw her. “Have courage, daughter,” He said. “Your faith has made you well.”(n)(S) And the woman was made well from that moment.(o)

22 When Jesus turned and saw her, he said, "Be courageous, daughter! Your faith has made you well." And from that very hour the woman was well.

23 When Jesus came to the ruler’s house, and saw the flute players [who were professional, hired mourners] and the [grieving] crowd making an uproar,

23 And when Jesus came into the ruler's house, and saw the minstrels and the people making a noise,

23 When Jesus came into the (w)official’s house, and saw (AA)the flute-players and the crowd in noisy disorder,

23 When Jesus came to the leader’s house, He saw the flute players and a crowd lamenting loudly.(T)

23 When Jesus came to the official's house and saw the flute players and the crowd making a commotion,

24 He said, “Go away; for the girl is not dead, but is sleeping.” And they laughed and jeered at Him.

24 He said unto them, Give place: for the maid is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn.

24 He said, “Leave; for the girl (AB)has not died, but is asleep.” And they began laughing at Him.

24 “Leave,” He said, “because the girl isn’t dead, but sleeping.”(U) And they started laughing at Him.

24 he said, "Go away! The young lady hasn't died, but is sleeping." But they ridiculed him with laughter.

25 But when the crowd had been sent outside, Jesus went in and took her by the hand, and the girl got up.

25 But when the people were put forth, he went in, and took her by the hand, and the maid arose.

25 But (AC)when the crowd had been sent out, He entered and (AD)took her by the hand, and the girl (x)got up.

25 But when the crowd had been put outside, He went in and took her by the hand, and the girl got up.(V)

25 When the crowd had been driven outside, he went in, took her by the hand, and the young lady got up.

26 And the news about this spread throughout all that district.

26 And the fame hereof went abroad into all that land.

26 (AE)This news spread throughout all that land.

26 And this news spread throughout that whole area.(W)

Two Blind Men Healed

27 As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed Him, screaming loudly, “Have mercy and compassion on us, (c)Son of David (Messiah)!”

27 And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, Thou Son of David, have mercy on us.

27 As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed Him, crying out, “Have mercy on us, (AF)Son of David!”

27 As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed Him, shouting, “Have mercy on us, Son of David!”(X)

27 As Jesus was traveling on from there, two blind men followed him, shouting, "Have mercy on us, Son of David!"

28 When He went into the house, the blind men came up to Him, and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe [with a deep, abiding trust] that I am able to do this?” They said to Him, “Yes, Lord.”

28 And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord.

28 When He entered the house, the blind men came up to Him, and Jesus *said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They *said to Him, “Yes, Lord.”

28 When He entered the house, the blind men approached Him, and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe(Y) that I can do this?”“Yes, Lord,” they answered Him.

28 When he had gone into the house, the blind men came to him. Jesus asked them, "Do you believe I can do this?" They told him, "Yes, Lord!"

29 Then He touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith [your trust and confidence in My power and My ability to heal] it will be done to you.”

29 Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you.

29 Then He touched their eyes, saying, (y)It shall be done to you (AG)according to your faith.”

29 Then He touched their eyes, saying, “Let it be done for you according to your faith!”

29 Then he touched their eyes and said, "According to your faith, let it be done for you!"

30 And their eyes were opened. And Jesus (d)sternly warned them: “See that no one knows this!”

30 And their eyes were opened; and Jesus straitly charged them, saying, See that no man know it.

30 And their eyes were opened. And Jesus (AH)sternly warned them: “See that no one knows about this!”

30 And their eyes were opened. Then Jesus warned them sternly, “Be sure that no one finds out!”(p)(Z)

30 And their eyes were opened. Then Jesus sternly told them, "See to it that nobody knows about this."

31 But they went out and spread the news about Him throughout that whole district.

31 But they, when they were departed, spread abroad his fame in all that country.

31 But they went out and spread the news about him throughout that region.

A Demon Expelled

32 While they were going away, a mute, demon-possessed man was brought to Jesus.

32 As they went out, behold, they brought to him a dumb man possessed with a devil.

32 As they were going out, (AJ)a mute, (AK)demon-possessed man (z)was brought to Him.

32 Just as they were going out, a demon-possessed man who was unable to speak was brought to Him.(AA)

32 As the men were going out, a man who couldn't talk because he was demon-possessed was brought to him.

33 And when the demon was driven out [by Jesus], the mute man spoke; and the crowds wondered in amazement, saying, “Never before has anything like this [miracle] been seen in Israel.”

33 And when the devil was cast out, the dumb spake: and the multitudes marvelled, saying, It was never so seen in Israel.

33 After the demon was cast out, the mute man spoke; and the crowds were amazed, and were saying, “(AL)Nothing like this has (aa)ever been seen in Israel.”

33 When the demon had been driven out, the man(q) spoke. And the crowds were amazed, saying, “Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel!”

33 As soon as the demon had been driven out, the man began to speak. The crowds were amazed and said, "Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel!"

34 But the Pharisees were saying, “He casts out the demons by [the power of] the ruler of demons.”

34 But the Pharisees said, He casteth out devils through the prince of the devils.

34 But the Pharisees were saying, “He (AM)casts out the demons by the ruler of the demons.”

34 But the Pharisees said, “He drives out demons by the ruler of the demons!”(AB)

34 But the Pharisees kept saying, "He drives out demons by the ruler of demons."

A Plentiful Harvest But Few Workers

35 Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages [in Galilee], teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news (gospel) of the kingdom, and healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness [His words and His works reflecting His Messiahship].

35 And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.

35 Jesus was going through all the cities and villages, (AN)teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness.

35 Then Jesus began traveling throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every illness.

36 When He saw the crowds, He was moved with compassion and pity for them, because they were dispirited and distressed, like sheep without a shepherd.(F)

36 But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.

36 (AO)Seeing the (ab)people, He felt compassion for them, (AP)because they were (ac)distressed and (ad)dispirited like sheep (ae)without a shepherd.

36 When He saw the crowds, He felt compassion for them, because they were weary and worn out,(AD) like sheep without a shepherd.(AE)

36 When he saw the crowds, he was deeply moved with compassion for them, because they were troubled and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.

37 Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest is [indeed] plentiful, but the workers are few.

37 Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few;

37 Then He *said to His disciples, (AQ)The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.

37 Then He said to His disciples,(AF) “The harvest is abundant, but the workers are few.

37 Then he told his disciples, "The harvest is vast, but the workers are few.

38 So pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.”

38 Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.

38 Therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.”

38 Therefore, pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.”

38 So ask the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest."
