King Rehoboam took counsel with the old men, who had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, "What counsel do you give me to return answer to this people?"
But Rehoboam rejected their advice and consulted the young advisers who served him, with whom he had grown up.
The young advisers with whom Rehoboam had grown up said to him, "Say this to these people who have said to you, 'Your father made us work hard, but now lighten our burden.' Say this to them: 'I am a lot harsher than my father!
So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king asked, saying, "Come to me again the third day."
Instead, Rehoboam spoke to them along the lines of what the younger men suggested. He told them, "My father burdened you heavily, but I will add to that burden. If my father disciplined you with whips, I'm going to discipline you with scorpions!"
But as for the children of Israel who lived in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.
Then king Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was over the men subject to forced labor; and all Israel stoned him to death with stones. King Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.
When Rehoboam was come to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah, and the tribe of Benjamin, a hundred and eighty thousand chosen men, who were warriors, to fight against the house of Israel, to bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam the son of Solomon.
"Speak to Rehoboam the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the rest of the people, saying,
If this people goes up to offer sacrifices in the house of Yahweh at Jerusalem, then the heart of this people will turn again to their lord, even to Rehoboam king of Judah; and they will kill me, and return to Rehoboam king of Judah."
Rehoboam the son of Solomon reigned in Judah. Rehoboam was forty-one years old when he began to reign, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city which Yahweh had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, to put his name there: and his mother's name was Naamah the Ammonitess.
It happened in the fifth year of king Rehoboam, that Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem;
King Rehoboam made in their place shields of brass, and committed them to the hands of the captains of the guard, who kept the door of the king's house.
Now the rest of the acts of Rehoboam, and all that he did, aren't they written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?
There was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam continually.
Rehoboam slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David: and his mother's name was Naamah the Ammonitess. Abijam his son reigned in his place.
He walked in all the sins [of idol worship] that his father [Rehoboam] committed before him; and his heart was not entirely devoted to the Lord his God, like the heart of his father (forefather) David.

Then Rehoboam went to Shechem,
So they summoned him. Then Jeroboam and all Israel came and spoke to Rehoboam:
Rehoboam replied, “Return to me in three days.” So the people left.
Then King Rehoboam consulted with the elders who had served his father Solomon when he was alive, asking, “How do you advise me to respond to these people?”
But Rehoboam rejected their advice and consulted the young advisers who served him, with whom he had grown up.
The young advisers with whom Rehoboam had grown up said to him, "Say this to these people who have said to you, 'Your father made us work hard, but now lighten our burden' -- say this to them: 'I am a lot harsher than my father!
So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, just as the king had ordered, saying, “Return to me on the third day.”
Then the king answered them harshly. King Rehoboam rejected the elders’ advice
Instead, Rehoboam spoke to them along the lines of what the younger men suggested. He told them, "My father burdened you heavily, but I will add to that burden. If my father disciplined you with whips, I will, too with scorpions!"
When all Israel saw that the king did not listen and pay attention to them, the people answered him,
We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse.
Every man to your tents, O Israel;
Now, [Rehoboam, descendant of] David, see to your own house.”
But as for the Israelites living in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.
Then King Rehoboam sent Hadoram,
When Rehoboam arrived in Jerusalem,
“Say to Rehoboam son of Solomon, king of Judah, to all Israel in Judah and Benjamin, and to the rest of the people:
Rehoboam stayed in Jerusalem, and he fortified cities
The priests and Levites from all their regions throughout Israel took their stand with Rehoboam,
So they strengthened the kingdom of Judah and supported Rehoboam son of Solomon for three years,
Rehoboam married Mahalath, daughter of David’s son Jerimoth and of Abihail daughter of Jesse’s son Eliab.
Rehoboam loved Maacah daughter
Rehoboam appointed Abijah son of Maacah as chief, leader among his brothers, intending to make him king.
Rehoboam also showed discernment by dispersing some of his sons to all the regions of Judah and Benjamin and to all the fortified cities. He gave them plenty of provisions and sought many wives for them.
When Rehoboam had established his sovereignty and royal power,
Because they were unfaithful to the Lord, in the fifth year of King Rehoboam, Shishak
Then Shemaiah
King Rehoboam made bronze shields in their place and committed them into the care of the captains of the royal escorts
When Rehoboam humbled himself, the Lord’s anger turned away from him, and He did not destroy him completely.

And king Rehoboam will make instead of them, shields of brass, and he deposited upon the hand of the chiefs of the runners, those watching the entrance of the king's house. And it will be as often as the king came into the house of Jehovah the runners came and lifted them up and turned them back to the chamber of the runners. And in his humbling himself, the anger of Jehovah turned back from him, and not to destroy to the end: and also in Judah was good words.
