Verse Concepts It happened that in the days of Herod, king of Judea, [there was] a certain priest, Zechariah by name, of the division of Abijah. And {he had a wife} from the daughters of Aaron, and her name [was] Elizabeth.
Now while Zechariah was serving as priest before God when his division was on duty,
And Zechariah was terrified [when he] saw [the angel], and fear fell upon him.
But the angel said to him, "Do not be afraid, Zechariah, because your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will call his name John.
And Zechariah said to the angel, "By what will I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced {in years}!"
And the people were waiting for Zechariah, and began to wonder [when] he was delayed in the temple.
When he came out, he was unable to speak to them, and they perceived that he had seen a vision there. But Zechariah kept making signs to them, and remained dumb.
and entered into the house of Zechariah, and greeted Elizabeth.
And it happened that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were wanting to name him {after} his father Zechariah.
Immediately Zechariah's mouth was opened and his tongue released, and he spoke, blessing God.
And his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied, saying,
in the time of the high priest Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness.

When they left Joash (for they left him very ill), his own servants conspired against him because of the blood of the son of Jehoiada the priest, and they murdered him on his bed. So he died, and they buried him in the City of David, but they did not bury him in the tombs of the kings.
