Israel's Complaint
1 {To the chief Musician for the sons of Korah, Maschil.} We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, what work thou didst in their days, in the times of old.
1 For the choir director. A (a)Maskil of the sons of Korah.O God, we have heard with our ears,Our (A)fathers have told usThe (B)work that You did in their days,In the (C)days of old.
1 For the choir director. A Maskil of the sons of Korah.God, we have heard with our ears—our ancestors have told us—the work You accomplished in their days,in days long ago:(A)
1 God, we heard it with our ears; our ancestors told us about what you did in their day a long time ago.
1 We have heard with our ears, O God,Our fathers have told usThe work You did in their days,In the days of old.
2 How thou didst drive out the heathen with thy hand, and plantedst them; how thou didst afflict the people, and cast them out.
2 You with Your own hand (D)drove out the nations; Then You (E)planted them; You (F)afflicted the peoples,Then You (G)spread them abroad.
2 With your hand you expelled the nations and established our ancestors. You afflicted nations and cast them out.
2 You drove out the [pagan] nations with Your own hand; Then you planted and established them (Israel);[It was by Your power that] You uprooted the [pagan] peoples,Then You spread them abroad.
3 For they got not the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them: but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst a favour unto them.
3 For by their own sword they (H)did not possess the land,And their own arm did not save them,But Your right hand and Your (I)arm and the (J)light of Your presence,For You (K)favored them.
3 For they did not take the land by their sword—their arm did not bring them victory—but by Your right hand, Your arm,and the light of Your face, for You were pleased with them.(C)
3 It was not with their sword that they inherited the land, nor did their own arm deliver them. But it was by your power, your strength, and by the light of your face; because you were pleased with them.
3 For our fathers did not possess the land [of Canaan] by their own sword,Nor did their own arm save them,But Your right hand and Your arm and the light of Your presence,Because You favored and delighted in them.
5 Through thee will we push down our enemies: through thy name will we tread them under that rise up against us.
5 Through You we will (N)push back our adversaries;Through Your name we will (O)trample down those who rise up against us.
5 Through you we will knock down our oppressors; through your name we will tread down those who rise up against us.
5 Through You we will gore our enemies [like a bull];Through Your name we will trample down those who rise up against us.
10 Thou makest us to turn back from the enemy: and they which hate us spoil for themselves.
10 You cause us to (X)turn back from the adversary; And those who hate us (Y)have taken spoil for themselves.
10 You made us retreat from our oppressors. Our enemies ransacked us.
10 You make us turn back from the enemy,And those who hate us have taken spoil for themselves.
13 Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and a derision to them that are round about us.
13 You make us an object of reproach to our neighbors,a source of mockery and ridicule to those around us.(M)
13 You made us a laughing stock to our neighbors, a source of mockery and derision to those around us.
13 You have made us the reproach and taunt of our neighbors,A scoffing and a derision to those around us.
16 For the voice of him that reproacheth and blasphemeth; by reason of the enemy and avenger.
16 Because of the voice of him who (AH)reproaches and reviles,Because of the presence of the (AI)enemy and the avenger.
16 because of the voice of the one who mocks and reviles, because of the enemy and the avenger.
16 Because of the voice of the taunter and reviler,Because of the presence of the enemy and the avenger.
17 All this is come upon us; yet have we not forgotten thee, neither have we dealt falsely in thy covenant.
17 All this has come upon us, but we have (AJ)not forgotten You,And we have not (AK)dealt falsely with Your covenant.
17 All this came upon us, yet we did not forsake you, and we have not dealt falsely with your covenant;
17 All this has come upon us, yet we have not forgotten You,Nor have we been false to Your covenant [which You made with our fathers].
19 Though thou hast sore broken us in the place of dragons, and covered us with the shadow of death.
19 Yet You have (AN)crushed us in a place of (AO)jackalsAnd covered us with (AP)the shadow of death.
19 Nevertheless, you crushed us in the lair of jackals, and covered us in deep darkness.
19 Yet You have [distressingly] crushed us in the place of jackalsAnd covered us with [the deep darkness of] the shadow of death.
