Then take another branch and write on it, 'For Joseph, the branch of Ephraim and all the house of Israel associated with him.' read more. Join them as one stick; they will be as one in your hand. When your people say to you, 'Will you not tell us what these things mean?' tell them, 'This is what the sovereign Lord says: Look, I am about to take the branch of Joseph which is in the hand of Ephraim and the tribes of Israel associated with him, and I will place them on the stick of Judah, and make them into one stick -- they will be one in my hand.' The sticks you write on will be in your hand in front of them. Then tell them, 'This is what the sovereign Lord says: Look, I am about to take the Israelites from among the nations where they have gone. I will gather them from round about and bring them to their land. I will make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Israel, and one king will rule over them all. They will live in the land I gave to my servant Jacob, in which your fathers lived; they will live in it -- they and their children and their grandchildren forever. David my servant will be prince over them forever. I will make a covenant of peace with them; it will be a perpetual covenant with them. I will establish them, increase their numbers, and place my sanctuary among them forever. My dwelling place will be with them; I will be their God, and they will be my people. (I) Of love (Ho 11:4), parallel to "cords of a man," not such as oxen are led by, but humane methods, as a father draws his child by leading strings, "teaching him to go (Ho 11:1).
(II) Christ's "bands" (Ps 2:3), an "easy yoke" to the regenerate, seem galling chains to the natural man, and he strives to "break them asunder."
(III) Christ's body, the church, ' by bands," i.e. sinews and nerves binding limb to limb, "having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God" (Col 2:19). Faith, love, and peace are the spiritual "bands" (Col 2:2; 3:14; Eph 4:3).
(IV) The bands tying the yoke to the neck of a beast of burden is the image of the captivity in which Jerusalem and Israel have been held, and from which Christ shall free them at His glorious coming (Eze 34:27; Isa 28:22; 52:2); also the captivity to Satan of the spiritual Israel, from which Christ releases us.
(V) "Bands" means, in Zec 11:7, the bond of brotherhood which originally hound together Judah and Jerusalem, severed because of their unfaithfulness to the covenant, but to be restored everlastingly when they shall turn to Messiah (Eze 37:15-28), and when Messiah "shall make them one nation upon the mountains of Israel."
(VI) "There are no bands in their death" (Ps 73:4); i.e., the prosperous wicked, thought the psalmist in a desponding fit of unbelief for a time, have no pains enchaining them in their dying hour; passion and impatience here lost sight of the real death-bringing pains hanging over the wicked (Job 21:17; Ps 11:6).
