one "possessed with a devil." In the days of our Lord and his apostles, evil spirits, "daemons," were mysteriously permitted by God to exercise an influence both over the souls and bodies of men, inflicting dumbness (Mt 9:32), blindness (Mt 12:22), epilepsy (Mr 9:17-27), insanity (Mt 8:28; Mr 5:1-5). Daemoniacs are frequently distinguished from those who are afflicted with ordinary bodily maladies (Mr 1:32; 16:17-18; Lu 6:17-18). The daemons speak in their own persons (Mt 8:29; Mr 1:23-24; 5:7). This influence is clearly distinguished from the ordinary power of corruption and of temptation over men. In the daemoniac his personality seems to be destroyed, and his actions, words, and even thoughts to be overborne by the evil spirit (Mark, l.c.; Ac 19:15).

And [when] he came to the other side, to the region of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men coming from among the tombs met him, very violent, so that no one was able to pass by along that road. And behold, they cried out, saying, "{What do you have to do with us}, Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?"
Now [as] they were going away, behold, they brought to him a demon-possessed man [who was] unable to speak.
Then a demon-possessed man [who was] blind and mute was brought to him. And he healed him so that the [man who was] mute could speak and see.
And so then there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit, and he cried out, saying, "{Leave us alone}, Jesus the Nazarene! Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God!"
Now [when it] was evening, when the sun had set, they began bringing to him all those {who were sick} and those who were demon-possessed.
And they came to the other side of the sea, to the region of the Gerasenes. And [as] he was getting out of the boat, immediately from the tombs a man with an unclean spirit went to meet him, read more. who {lived} among the tombs. And no one was able to bind him any longer, not even with a chain, because he had often been bound with shackles and chains, and the chains had been torn apart by him, and the shackles had been shattered. And no one was strong [enough] to subdue him. And during every night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was crying out and cutting himself with stones.
And crying out with a loud voice he said, "{What have I to do with you}, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore you by God, do not torment me!"
And one [individual] from the crowd answered him, "Teacher, I brought to you my son who has {a spirit that makes him mute}. And whenever it seizes him, it throws him down and he foams at the mouth and grinds his teeth and becomes paralyzed. And I told your disciples that they should expel it, and they were not able [to do so]. read more. And he answered them [and] said, "O unbelieving generation! {How long} will I be with you? {How long} must I put up with you? Bring him to me!" And they brought him to him. And [when he] saw him, the spirit immediately convulsed him, and falling on the ground, he began to roll around, foaming at the mouth. And he asked his father how long it was since this had been happening to him. And he said, "From childhood. And often it has thrown him both into fire and into water, in order that it could destroy him. But if you are able [to do] anything, have compassion on us [and] help us!" But Jesus said to him, "If you are able! All [things] [are] possible for the one who believes!" Immediately the father of the child cried out [and] said, "I believe! Help my unbelief!" Now [when] Jesus saw that a crowd was running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, "Mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him, and enter into him no more!" And it came out, screaming and convulsing [him] greatly, and he became as if [he were] dead, so that most [of them] said, "He has died!" But Jesus took hold of his hand [and] raised him up, and he stood up.
And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will expel demons, they will speak in new tongues, they will pick up snakes. And if they drink any deadly [poison] it will never hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick and {they will get} well."
And he came down with them [and] stood on a level place, and a large crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all of Judea and Jerusalem and the seacoast district of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases, and those who were troubled by unclean spirits were cured.
But the evil spirit answered [and] said to them, "Jesus I know, and Paul I am acquainted with, but who are you?"
