VOCATION, or CALLING, is a gracious act of God in Christ, by which, through his word and Spirit, he calls forth sinful men, who are liable to condemnation and placed under the dominion of sin, from the condition of the animal life, and from the pollutions and corruptions of this world, 2Ti 1:9; Mt 11:28; 1Pe 2:9-10; Ga 1:4; 2Pe 2:20; Ro 10:13-15; 1Pe 3:19; Ge 6:3, unto "the fellowship of Jesus Christ," and of his kingdom and its benefits; that, being united unto him as their head, they may derive from him life, sensation, motion, and a plenitude of every spiritual blessing, to the glory of God and their own salvation, 1Co 1:9; Ga 2:20; Eph 1:3,6; 2Th 2:13-14. The end intended is, that they who have been called answer by faith to God and to Christ who give the call, and that they thus become the covenanted people of God through Christ the Mediator of the new covenant; and, after having become believers and parties to the covenant, that they love, fear, honour, and worship God and Christ, render in all things obedience to the divine precepts "in righteousness and true holiness," and that by this means they "make their calling and election sure," Pr 1:24; Heb 3:7; Re 3:20; Eph 2:11-16; Tit 3:8; De 6:4-5; Jer 32:38-39; Lu 1:74-75; 2Pe 1:1,10. The glory of God, who is supremely wise, good, merciful, just, and powerful, is so luminously displayed in this communication both of his grace and glory, as deservedly to raise into rapturous admiration the minds of angels and of men, and to employ their loosened tongues in celebrating the praises of Jehovah, Re 4:8-11; 5:8-10. See CALLING.
Come unto me, all ye who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
to grant unto us, having been delivered out of the hand of our enemies, to serve Him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before Him all the days of our life.
For every one who may call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Then how can they call on him on whom they have not believed? and how can they believe on him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? read more. And how can they preach, unless they may be sent forth? as has been written, How beautiful are the feet of those, who preach the gospel of good things!
God is faithful, through whom you have been called unto the fellowship of His Son our Lord Jesus Christ.
who gave Himself for our sins, in order that he might redeem us from the present evil age, according to the will of God even our Father:
I am crucified along with Christ; and I live no longer, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh, I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
Blessed is the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the one having blessed us with all spiritual blessing in the heavenlies in Christ:
unto the praise of the glory of his grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved:
Therefore remember, that when you were Gentiles in the flesh, called Uncircumcision by that which is called Circumcision, made in the flesh with hands; because you were at that time without Christ, being alienated from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers of the covenants of the promise, having no hope and being atheists in the world. read more. But now you are in Christ Jesus, who being at one time far off have been made nigh by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace, the one having made both one, and having broken down the middle wall of partition, having destroyed the law of commandments in ordinances, through his flesh, the enmity, in order that He might create the two in himself into one new man, making peace; and that he may reconcile both in one body to God through the cross, having slain the enmity on in.
the one having saved us, and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given to us in Christ Jesus before the eternal times,
The word is faithful, and I wish you to be established concerning these things, in order that those having believed in God may think to excel in good works. These things are beautiful and useful to the people:
Therefore as the Holy Spirit says, This day if you hear his voice,
Behold, I stand at the door, and am knocking: if any one may hear my voice, and may open the door, I will come in unto him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
And the four living creatures having six wings, one opposite one of them; filled with eyes without and within; and they cease not day and night, saying; Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Omnipotent, who was, and who is, and who is the one coming. And when the living creatures shall give glory and honor and thanksgiving to the one sitting upon the throne, who lives unto the ages of the ages, read more. the twenty-four elders will fall down before the one sitting upon the throne, and will worship Him who lives unto the ages of the ages, and will cast their crowns before the throne, saying, Thou art worthy, O Lord truly our God, to receive glory and honor and power: because thou hast created all things, and through thy will they were, and were created.
And when he took the book, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, having each a harp, and golden bowls filled with incense, which are the prayers of the saints. And they sing a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to receive the book, and to open its seals: because thou wast slain, and didst with thy blood redeem unto God out of every tribe, and tongue, and people, and nation; read more. and didst make them a kingdom and priests unto our God: and they shall reign on the earth.
