For this cause it is of faith, that it may be according to grace; to the end that the promise may be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all (as it has been written, "A father of many nations have I made you"), before God Whom he believed, Who maketh alive the dead, and calleth the things that are not, as though they were; who, past hope, believed against hope, to the end that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which had been spoken, "So shall your seed be."

And, if, indeed, they had been mindful of that country from which they went out, they would have had opportunity to return. But now they long for a better country, that is, a heavenly one; wherefore, God is not ashamed of them, to be called their God; for He prepared for them a city.
