Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel together how they might lay a snare to entrap him in his discourse. And they sent to him their disciples, with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God with veracity; and carest for no man, for thou regardest not the person of men: tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to pay tribute to Caesar, or not?

Then saith he to them, Render therefore to Caesar, the things which are Caesar's; and to God, the things which are God's. And when they heard him, they marvelled, and leaving him, went away.

And they sent unto him certain of the Pharisees and of the Herodians, that they might entrap him in discourse. LET every soul be subject to the superior powers: for there is no power but from God; the existing powers are appointed by God. Wherefore he that sets himself against authority, resists the ordinance of God: and they who resist shall receive to themselves condemnation. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil.
