But a certain pharisee, named Gamaliel, a doctor of the law, held in much esteem by all the people, stood up in the council, and ordered the apostles to be taken out a little while; and then he said unto them,
For I tell you, that unless your righteousness exceed that of the scribes and pharisees, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.
and behold, they brought to Him one that had the palsy laid on a couch: and Jesus seeing their faith said to the paralytic, Take heart my son, for thy sins are forgiven thee. Upon which, some of the scribes said in themselves, This man blasphemeth: but Jesus knowing their surmises, said to them, Why think ye evil in your hearts?read more.

To say, thy sins be forgiven thee? or to say, rise up and walk? but that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, Arise (saith He then to the paralytic) and take up thy couch, and go away to thy house. And He said unto them as He was teaching them, Beware of the scribes, who love to walk in long robes, and salutations in public-places, and the chief seats in the synagogues, and uppermost places at feasts; who devour widows houses, and for a shew of religion make long prayers: these shall receive the heavier judgement.
O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that killest the prophets and stonest them that are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and ye would not? but when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonders that He wrought, and the children crying out in the temple, Hosanna to the Son of David, they were vexed to the heart, and said to Him, Dost thou hear what these say? And Jesus saith unto them, Yes, have ye never read, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast procured praise?
And the scribes and pharisees, when they saw Him eating with publicans and sinners, said to his disciples, What is the meaning that He eateth with publicans and sinners? Which Jesus hearing, saith unto them, They that are in health have no need of a physician, but they that are ill: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.
And their scribes and pharisees murmured at his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners? And Jesus answered and said unto them, They that are in health have no need of a physician, but they that are sick: I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

And Jesus spake and said, as He was teaching in the temple, How do the scribes say, that the Christ is the son of David? for David himself said by the holy Spirit, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand till I make thine enemies thy footstool. So that David himself calleth Him Lord: how then is He his son? And many of the people heard Him with pleasure.
And the scribes and pharisees watched Him to see if He would work a cure on the sabbath: that they might find an accusation against Him. But He knew their thoughts, and said to the man that had the withered hand, Rise, and stand in the midst: and he rose up and stood forth. Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing, Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to let it be lost?read more.
And looking round upon them all, He said to the man, Stretch out thine hand: and he did so, and his hand was made as sound as the other. And they were filled with confusion: and consulted together, what they might do to Jesus.
Then all the disciples deserted Him and fled. And they, that apprehended Jesus, led Him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled: and Peter followed Him at a distance, to the high-priest's palace, and went in, and sat with the servants, that he might see the issue. Now the chief priests and elders, and the whole council sought false-witness against Jesus, that they might put Him to death: but found none.read more.

And from that time began Jesus to acquaint his disciples, that He must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders, and chief priests, and scribes; and be put to death, and be raised again on the third day.

Therefore every teacher, who has been thus instructed in the knowledge of the kingdom of heaven, is like a master of a family, who brings forth out of his store things new and old.
desiring to be teachers of the law, though they neither understand what they say, nor what things they assert.
And when Jesus had ended these discourses, the people were amazed at his doctrine: for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes.
And his disciples asked Him, saying, Why then do the scribes say, that Elias must first come?
Then they asked Him, saying, Why do the scribes say, that Elias must come first?
So there was a great clamor: and the scribes that were of the party of the pharisees rose up and contended, saying, We find no evil in this man; but if a spirit or an angel hath spoken to him, let us not fight against God.
