And they come unto thee as a people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they do them not; for with their mouth they shew much love, but their heart goeth after their dishonest gain. And behold, thou art unto them as a lovely song, a pleasant voice, and one that playeth well on an instrument; and they hear thy words, but they do them not.



Ardent lips, and a wicked heart, are as an earthen vessel overlaid with silver dross.

And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things that I say?


And they remembered that God was their rock, and God, the Most High, their redeemer. But they flattered him with their mouth, and lied unto him with their tongue;

And some of those who were of the sect of the Pharisees, who believed, rose up from among them, saying that they ought to circumcise them and enjoin them to keep the law of Moses.

And the Pharisees said to him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath what is not lawful?

But the ruler of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus healed on the sabbath, answering said to the crowd, There are six days in which people ought to work; in these therefore come and be healed, and not on the sabbath day.

The Jews therefore said to the healed man, It is sabbath, it is not permitted thee to take up thy couch.

For I bear them witness that they have zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.


but now, knowing God, but rather being known by God, how do ye turn again to the weak and beggarly principles to which ye desire to be again anew in bondage?

and on coming from the market-place, unless they are washed, they do not eat; and there are many other things which they have received to hold, the washing of cups and vessels, and brazen utensils, and couches),

Now therefore why tempt ye God, by putting a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear?


If ye have died with Christ from the elements of the world, why as if alive in the world do ye subject yourselves to ordinances?

consisting only of meats and drinks and divers washings, ordinances of flesh, imposed until the time of setting things right.
