“Lord, reveal to me the end of my life
and the number of my days.
Let me know how short-lived I am.
If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.
In those days Hezekiah became terminally ill. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz came and said to him, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Put your affairs in order, for you are about to die; you will not recover.’”
If only they were wise, they would figure it out;
they would understand their fate.
Turn Your angry gaze from me
so that I may be cheered up
before I die and am gone.”
But there is hope for whoever is joined with all the living, since a live dog is better than a dead lion.
Whatever your hands find to do, do with all your strength, because there is no work, planning, knowledge, or wisdom in Sheol where you are going.
Light is sweet,
and it is pleasing for the eyes to see the sun.
Indeed, if a man lives many years,
let him rejoice in them all,
and let him remember the days of darkness, since they will be many.
All that comes is futile.
For Sheol cannot thank You;
Death cannot praise You.
Those who go down to the Pit
cannot hope for Your faithfulness.
The living, only the living can thank You,
as I do today;
a father will make Your faithfulness known to children.
We must do the works of Him who sent Me while it is day. Night is coming when no one can work.
For me, living is Christ and dying is gain.
And if you address as Father the One who judges impartially based on each one’s work, you are to conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your temporary residence.
