When the Lamb opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the persons who were slaughtered because of the word of God, and for the witness they gave.
All who heard him were amazed. They asked: Is he the one who raised havoc with those who called on this name in Jerusalem? Did he come for that purpose to take them as prisoners to the chief priests?
When your witness Stephen was put to death, I was there, approving of his murder and taking care of the coats of his murderers.'

He kneeled down and cried with a loud voice: Jehovah, do not charge this sin against them. After saying this he fell asleep in death.
I persecuted the people who followed this Way to the point of death. I arrested men and women and threw them into prison.
Now this he spoke, signifying by what manner of death he should glorify God. After he spoke he said: Follow me.
