When God made a promise to Abraham, he could swear by no one greater then himself, so he swore by himself. He said: I will surely bless you and give you many descendants.
He said: I am taking an oath on my own name, declares Jehovah, that because you have done this and have not refused to give me your son, your only son,
I have bound myself with an oath. A word has gone out from my righteous mouth that will not be recalled. Every knee will bow to me and every tongue will swear allegiance.
Jehovah has sworn with his right hand and with his mighty arm (of power): I will never again let your enemies eat your grain, nor will foreigners drink the new wine that you produced.
Men swear by someone greater then themselves: and an oath for confirmation to them puts an end to the problem. Jehovah, the God of heaven, took me from my father's house and from the land of my birth. He spoke to me and swore to me. He said: I will give this land to your descendants. He will send his angel before you. You will take a wife for my son from there.

The Law appoints men as high priests who have weakness. But the oath that came after the Law appointed the Son who is perfect forever.
Jehovah heard what you said. He was angry and solemnly swore: Not one man of this evil generation will see that good land, which I swore to give your fathers, Except Caleb son of Jephunneh. But none of you will enter it except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun. You said your children would be taken as prisoners of war. Instead, I will bring them into the land you rejected, and they will enjoy it. But your bodies will drop dead in this desert. Your children will be shepherds in the desert for forty years. They will suffer for your unfaithfulness until the last of your bodies lies dead in the desert. You explored the land for forty days. So for forty years, one year for each day, you will suffer for your sins and know what it means for me to be against you.' I, Jehovah, have spoken. I swear I will do these things to all the people in this whole wicked congregation. For they have joined forces against me. They will meet their end in this desert. Here they will die!'
I was disgusted (angry) with this generation, and said: 'They always go astray in their hearts, and they have not known my ways.' So I swore in my anger: 'They will not enter into my rest.'
For forty years I was grieved with this generation. I said: It is a people who go astray in their hearts, and they have not known my ways. I swore to them in my anger that they should not enter into my rest.
that you may enter into the covenant with Jehovah your God, and into His oath that Jehovah your God is making with you today. Jehovah will confirm today with this promise that you are his people and that he is your God. This is what he told you. This is what he promised your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob with an oath. You are not the only people to receive this promise and its conditions.read more.

Then I passed by you and saw that you were at the time for love. So I spread my skirt over you and covered your nakedness. I also swore to you and entered into a covenant with you so that you became mine, declares the Lord Jehovah.
