but I say unto you, don't return evil for evil; on the contrary, if any one strike thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other likewise.

if any one strike you on one cheek, present to him the other likewise: or if any one seize your cloak, surrender your coat also.

Don't allow any one to return evil for evil, but strive to do all the good you can to one another, and to all the world.

In a word, live all of you in perfect agreement and sympathy, be full of fraternal love, compassion, and affability. don't return evil for evil, nor calumny for calumny; on the contrary, bestow your benedictions, considering that your vocation obliges you thereto, as a means to obtain the divine blessing. " He that desires to live in prosperity, must restrain his tongue from detraction, and his lips from uttering falsehood:

Render no man evil for evil. mind such things as are approved not only by God, but by men.

dear brethren, avenge not yourselves, but leave that to the resentment of another: for it is written, "vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord."

but as for you, love your enemies, do good, and lend without expecting any advantage from it: so shall your reward be great, in acting like the children of the most high: for he is kind to the most ungrateful wretches.

but I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them who traduce you, and persecute you:

Blessed are the pacific: for they shall be the children of God.

and pray for those, who maliciously abuse you.

bless them who persecute you:

we are fatigu'd by our manual toil: when reviled, we pray: when persecuted, we don't repine:

therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing, you will heap coals of fire on his head .

Upon his expressing himself thus, one of the officers there present, struck Jesus on the face, saying, answerest thou the high priest so? Jesus replied, if I have said any thing injurious, show then wherein; but if I said right, why do you smite me?

then they spit in his face, some beat him on the head, others slapt him on the cheeks,

hail king of the Jews! said they, and struck him on the cheeks.
