Then Jesus entered into the temple of God, drove out all those that sold and bought in the temple, overthrew the tables of the money-changers, and the stalls of those that sold doves, and said to them, it is written, " my house shall be the house of prayer, but ye have made it a den of thieves."
Being arrived at Jerusalem, Jesus went into the temple, and began to turn out those that bought and sold there; he overthrew the table of Money-changers, and the stalls of those that sold doves. nor would he suffer any baggage to be carried thro' the temple. at the same time he explained himself to them in these words, is it not written, "my house shall be called a house of prayer to all nations?" but ye have made it a harbour for thieves.
As soon as he entred into the temple, he drove out the sellers and buyers there: telling them it is written, "my house is a house of prayer: but ye have made it a den of thieves."
upon which he made a whip of small cords, and drove them all out of the temple, with their sheep, and oxen; and threw about the changers money, and over-set the tables; and said to the dove-sellers, away with these things; make not my father's house a market-house.
so that he fell a leaping, and walking, and entred with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God.
you did not bestow any oil upon my head; but she has poured her rich perfume upon my feet. wherefore, I tell you, her sins, which are numerous, are forgiven; and that is the reason of all this love: but his love is less, to whom less is forgiven.
went up to him, dress'd his wounds by applying oil and wine, then set him upon his own mule, and brought him to an inn, where he took care of him.
so he departed and went to his father. but while he was yet at a distance, his father saw him, and mov'd with compassion, ran and threw himself upon his neck, and kissed him.
there cannot be greater love than that of a man, who lays down his life for his friends.
but herein hath God displayed his love towards us, in that Christ died for us, even while we were yet sinners.
upon which the lord of that vassal, touch'd with compassion, gave him his liberty, and discharged him of the debt.
and entring into the house, they saw the infant with Mary his mother, and prostrating themselves, they worshipped him: then opening their treasures, they presented him with gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.
at sight of this, Simon Peter fell on his knees before Jesus, and said, Lord, withdraw from such a sinful man as I:
Mary being come to the place where Jesus was, as soon as she saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying, Lord, if you had been here, my brother had not been dead.
as soon as I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead: but he laid his right hand upon me, and said, "Fear not; I am the first and the last:
wo unto thee, Chorazin, wo unto thee, Bethsaida: for if the miracles which were done among you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
wo unto thee Chorazin; wo unto thee Bethsaida: for if the miracles, which have been wrought among you, had been wrought in Tyre and Sidon, they would long since have lain repenting in sackcloth and ashes.
At the same time, Judas who had betrayed him, finding that he was condemned, repented, and carried back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and senators, saying, I have sinned in betraying the blood of the innocent: and they said, what is it to us? you must look to that. then throwing down the pieces of silver in the temple, he departed, and went and hanged himself.
why should you now delay? arise, be baptized, and cleansed from your sins, by invoking the name of the Lord.
upon this he was full of resentment, and refused to go in: and when his father came out to persuade him, he replied to his father,
then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, he has spoke blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? you yourselves have now heard his blasphemy.
then the high priest rent his robes, and said to the council, what occasion is there for any more witnesses?
When they heard these things, they were transported with rage, and gnashed their teeth against him.
but since thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.
Before he had done speaking, the company appears, Judas one of the twelve marching in front, who advanc'd to Jesus to give him a kiss. but Jesus said to him, Judas is it thus you betray the son of man, with a kiss?
And before he had done speaking, Judas one of the twelve appear'd, with a numerous retinue, arm'd with swords and staves, being sent by the chief priests and elders of the people. now he that was to betray him, gave them this signal, the person I shall kiss, is the very man, be sure to secure him. and immediately advancing to Jesus, he said, master, I salute you, and kissed him.
All of a sudden, while he was yet speaking, appear'd Judas, one of the twelve, attended by a great number of people with swords and clubs, who were sent by the chief priests, the Scribes, and rulers. now he that betrayed him, had given them this signal, you will see me salute one with a kiss, that's he: seize him, and don't let him escape. then advancing, he went directly up to him, saying, master, master, and kissed him.
besides the people that pass'd by, shook their heads, and impiously said: ah, you that can destroy the temple, and rebuild it in three days,
then they spit in his face, some beat him on the head, others slapt him on the cheeks,
then some began to spit on him, others cover'd his face and struck him on the head, crying out, divine, who it is. and the domestics slapt him on the cheeks.
Pilate perceiving he was so far from prevailing, that they were more tumultuous, he took water, and washed his hands before all the people, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: you are answerable for it.
if they should not receive you, nor mind your instructions: when ye depart out of that house, or city, shake off the pagan dust from your feet.
wherever they shall refuse to entertain you, or to hear you, at your departure shake off the dust of your feet, as a testimonial against them. I assure you, the people of Sodom and Gomorrha shall be treated with less severity in the day of judgment, than that city.
if any refuse to entertain you, when you leave that city, shake off the dust from your feet, as a sign of their being abandon'd.
and cry, "we shake off the dust, that sticks to our feet, against you: but take notice, the kingdom of God has been near you."
so they shook off the dust of their feet against them, and went to Iconium.
rose from supper, laid aside his garment, and took a towel to wrap about him. after that, he poured water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.
