'Food' in the Bible
Who pluck mallow by the bushes,And whose food is the root of the broom shrub.
So that his life loathes bread,And his soul favorite food.
“For the ear tests wordsAs the palate tastes food.
“For by these He judges peoples;He gives food in abundance.
“Who prepares for the raven its nourishmentWhen its young cry to GodAnd wander about without food?
“From there he spies out food;His eyes see it from afar.
“Surely the mountains bring him food,And all the beasts of the field play there.
My tears have been my food day and night,While they say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”
They wander about for foodAnd growl if they are not satisfied.
They also gave me gall for my foodAnd for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.
You crushed the heads of Leviathan;You gave him as food for the creatures of the wilderness.
And in their heart they put God to the testBy asking food according to their desire.
He rained down manna upon them to eatAnd gave them food from heaven.
Man did eat the bread of angels;He sent them food in abundance.
Before they had satisfied their desire,While their food was in their mouths,
They have given the dead bodies of Your servants for food to the birds of the heavens,The flesh of Your godly ones to the beasts of the earth.
He causes the grass to grow for the cattle,And vegetation for the labor of man,So that he may bring forth food from the earth,
And wine which makes man’s heart glad,So that he may make his face glisten with oil,And food which sustains man’s heart.
The young lions roar after their preyAnd seek their food from God.
They all wait for YouTo give them their food in due season.
Their soul abhorred all kinds of food,And they drew near to the gates of death.
He has given food to those who fear Him;He will remember His covenant forever.
Who gives food to all flesh,For His lovingkindness is everlasting.
The eyes of all look to You,And You give them their food in due time.
Who executes justice for the oppressed;Who gives food to the hungry.The Lord sets the prisoners free.
He gives to the beast its food,And to the young ravens which cry.
Prepares her food in the summerAnd gathers her provision in the harvest.
She has prepared her food, she has mixed her wine;She has also set her table;
Abundant food is in the fallow ground of the poor,But it is swept away by injustice.
Do not love sleep, or you will become poor;Open your eyes, and you will be satisfied with food.
He who is generous will be blessed,For he gives some of his food to the poor.
Do not desire his delicacies,For it is deceptive food.
If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat;And if he is thirsty, give him water to drink;
And there will be goats’ milk enough for your food,For the food of your household,And sustenance for your maidens.
A poor man who oppresses the lowlyIs like a driving rain which leaves no food.
He who tills his land will have plenty of food,But he who follows empty pursuits will have poverty in plenty.
Keep deception and lies far from me,Give me neither poverty nor riches;Feed me with the food that is my portion,
Under a slave when he becomes king,And a fool when he is satisfied with food,
The ants are not a strong people,But they prepare their food in the summer;
She is like merchant ships;She brings her food from afar.
She rises also while it is still nightAnd gives food to her householdAnd portions to her maidens.
Her gain and her harlot’s wages will be set apart to the Lord; it will not be stored up or hoarded, but her gain will become sufficient food and choice attire for those who dwell in the presence of the Lord.
The Lord has sworn by His right hand and by His strong arm,“I will never again give your grain as food for your enemies;Nor will foreigners drink your new wine for which you have labored.”
The wolf and the lamb will graze together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox; and dust will be the serpent’s food. They will do no evil or harm in all My holy mountain,” says the Lord.
“They will devour your harvest and your food;They will devour your sons and your daughters;They will devour your flocks and your herds;They will devour your vines and your fig trees;They will demolish with the sword your fortified cities in which you trust.
The dead bodies of this people will be food for the birds of the sky and for the beasts of the earth; and no one will frighten them away.
“They will die of deadly diseases, they will not be lamented or buried; they will be as dung on the surface of the ground and come to an end by sword and famine, and their carcasses will become food for the birds of the sky and for the beasts of the earth.”
I will make void the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem in this place, and I will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies and by the hand of those who seek their life; and I will give over their carcasses as food for the birds of the sky and the beasts of the earth.
I will give them into the hand of their enemies and into the hand of those who seek their life. And their dead bodies will be food for the birds of the sky and the beasts of the earth.
But rather we will certainly carry out every word that has proceeded from our mouths, by burning sacrifices to the queen of heaven and pouring out drink offerings to her, just as we ourselves, our forefathers, our kings and our princes did in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem; for then we had plenty of food and were well off and saw no misfortune.
On the ninth day of the fourth month the famine was so severe in the city that there was no food for the people of the land.
All her people groan seeking bread;They have given their precious things for foodTo restore their lives themselves.“See, O Lord, and look,For I am despised.”
“I called to my lovers, but they deceived me;My priests and my elders perished in the cityWhile they sought food to restore their strength themselves.
The hands of compassionate womenBoiled their own children;They became food for themBecause of the destruction of the daughter of my people.
Your food which you eat shall be twenty shekels a day by weight; you shall eat it from time to time.
Behold, this was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had arrogance, abundant food and careless ease, but she did not help the poor and needy.
For they have committed adultery, and blood is on their hands. Thus they have committed adultery with their idols and even caused their sons, whom they bore to Me, to pass through the fire to them as food.

They were scattered for lack of a shepherd, and they became food for every beast of the field and were scattered.
“As I live,” declares the Lord God, “surely because My flock has become a prey, My flock has even become food for all the beasts of the field for lack of a shepherd, and My shepherds did not search for My flock, but rather the shepherds fed themselves and did not feed My flock;
‘Thus says the Lord God, “Behold, I am against the shepherds, and I will demand My sheep from them and make them cease from feeding sheep. So the shepherds will not feed themselves anymore, but I will deliver My flock from their mouth, so that they will not be food for them.”’”
Then you will know that I, the Lord, have heard all your revilings which you have spoken against the mountains of Israel saying, ‘They are laid desolate; they are given to us for food.’
You will fall on the mountains of Israel, you and all your troops and the peoples who are with you; I will give you as food to every kind of predatory bird and beast of the field.
when you brought in foreigners, uncircumcised in heart and uncircumcised in flesh, to be in My sanctuary to profane it, even My house, when you offered My food, the fat and the blood; for they made My covenant void—this in addition to all your abominations.
By the river on its bank, on one side and on the other, will grow all kinds of trees for food. Their leaves will not wither and their fruit will not fail. They will bear every month because their water flows from the sanctuary, and their fruit will be for food and their leaves for healing.”
The remainder of the length alongside the holy allotment shall be 10,000 cubits toward the east and 10,000 toward the west; and it shall be alongside the holy allotment. And its produce shall be food for the workers of the city.
The king appointed for them a daily ration from the king’s choice food and from the wine which he drank, and appointed that they should be educated three years, at the end of which they were to enter the king’s personal service.
But Daniel made up his mind that he would not defile himself with the king’s choice food or with the wine which he drank; so he sought permission from the commander of the officials that he might not defile himself.
and the commander of the officials said to Daniel, “I am afraid of my lord the king, who has appointed your food and your drink; for why should he see your faces looking more haggard than the youths who are your own age? Then you would make me forfeit my head to the king.”
Then let our appearance be observed in your presence and the appearance of the youths who are eating the king’s choice food; and deal with your servants according to what you see.”
At the end of ten days their appearance seemed better and they were fatter than all the youths who had been eating the king’s choice food.
So the overseer continued to withhold their choice food and the wine they were to drink, and kept giving them vegetables.
‘Its foliage was beautiful and its fruit abundant,And in it was food for all.The beasts of the field found shade under it,And the birds of the sky dwelt in its branches,And all living creatures fed themselves from it.
and whose foliage was beautiful and its fruit abundant, and in which was food for all, under which the beasts of the field dwelt and in whose branches the birds of the sky lodged—
I did not eat any tasty food, nor did meat or wine enter my mouth, nor did I use any ointment at all until the entire three weeks were completed.
Those who eat his choice food will destroy him, and his army will overflow, but many will fall down slain.
They will not remain in the Lord’s land,But Ephraim will return to Egypt,And in Assyria they will eat unclean food.
Has not food been cut off before our eyes,Gladness and joy from the house of our God?
Therefore they offer a sacrifice to their netAnd burn incense to their fishing net;Because through these things their catch is large,And their food is plentiful.
Though the fig tree should not blossomAnd there be no fruit on the vines,Though the yield of the olive should failAnd the fields produce no food,Though the flock should be cut off from the foldAnd there be no cattle in the stalls,
If a man carries holy meat in the fold of his garment, and touches bread with this fold, or cooked food, wine, oil, or any other food, will it become holy?’” And the priests answered, “No.”
You are presenting defiled food upon My altar. But you say, ‘How have we defiled You?’ In that you say, ‘The table of the Lord is to be despised.’
“But you are profaning it, in that you say, ‘The table of the Lord is defiled, and as for its fruit, its food is to be despised.’
Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this,” says the Lord of hosts, “if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows.
Now John himself had a garment of camel’s hair and a leather belt around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey.
“For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?
When it was evening, the disciples came to Him and said, “This place is desolate and the hour is already late; so send the crowds away, that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.”
Ordering the people to sit down on the grass, He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up toward heaven, He blessed the food, and breaking the loaves He gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds,
“Who then is the faithful and sensible slave whom his master put in charge of his household to give them their food at the proper time?
And He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up toward heaven, He blessed the food and broke the loaves and He kept giving them to the disciples to set before them; and He divided up the two fish among them all.
And he would answer and say to them, “The man who has two tunics is to share with him who has none; and he who has food is to do likewise.”
But He said to them, “You give them something to eat!” And they said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish, unless perhaps we go and buy food for all these people.”
For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing.
For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.
But He said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.”
Jesus *said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to accomplish His work.
Do not work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you, for on Him the Father, God, has set His seal.”
For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink.
Now at this time while the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint arose on the part of the Hellenistic Jews against the native Hebrews, because their widows were being overlooked in the daily serving of food.
