'Shades' in the Bible
Let the dark and the black night take it for themselves; let it be covered with a cloud; let the dark shades of day send fear on it.
As a servant desiring the shades of evening, and a workman looking for his payment:
The shades tremble beneath the waters and the inhabitants thereof;
Under shades he lieth down, In a secret place of reed and mire.
Cover him do shades, with their shadow, Cover him do willows of the brook.
O Lord, God of my salvation, I have been crying to you for help by day and by night:
Wilt thou do wonders to the dead? shall the shades arise and praise thee? Selah.
For her house is on the way down to death; her footsteps go down to the shades:
But he does not know that the spirits of the dead are there,And that her guests are [already] in the depths of Sheol (the nether world, the place of the dead).
The wanderer from the way of knowledge will have his resting-place among the shades.
“Sheol below is excited about you to meet you when you come [you tyrant of Babylon];It stirs up the spirits of the dead [to greet you], all the leaders of the earth;It raises all the kings of the nations from their thrones [in astonishment at your fall].
Your dead will live;Their dead bodies will rise.You who lie in the dust, awake and shout for joy!For your dew is a dew of [celestial] light [heavenly, supernatural],And the earth will give birth to the spirits of the dead.
Sanctify ye against her the battle, Rise, and we go up at noon. Woe to us, for turned hath the day, For stretched out are the shades of evening,
with sails made with embroidered Egyptian linen, festooned with blue banners, and with your sun shades made with purple cloth from Cypress.
