'Shadow' in the Bible

When Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, “Look, people are coming down from the tops of the mountains.” But Zebul said to him, “You are seeing the shadow of the mountains as if they were men.”

Isaiah said, “This shall be the sign to you from the Lord, that the Lord will do the thing that He has spoken: shall the shadow go forward ten steps or go back ten steps?”

So Hezekiah answered, “It is easy for the shadow to decline ten steps; no, but let the shadow turn backward ten steps.”

Isaiah the prophet cried to the Lord, and He brought the shadow on the stairway back ten steps by which it had gone down on the stairway of Ahaz.

For we are sojourners before You, and tenants, as all our fathers were; our days on the earth are like a shadow, and there is no hope.

“For we are only of yesterday and know nothing,Because our days on earth are as a shadow.

Before I go—and I shall not return—To the land of darkness and deep shadow,

The land of utter gloom as darkness itself,Of deep shadow without order,And which shines as the darkness.”

But it will not be well for the evil man and he will not lengthen his days like a shadow, because he does not fear God.

“Give us advice, make a decision;Cast your shadow like night at high noon;Hide the outcasts, do not betray the fugitive.

Like heat in drought, You subdue the uproar of aliens;Like heat by the shadow of a cloud, the song of the ruthless is silenced.

Who proceed down to EgyptWithout consulting Me,To take refuge in the safety of PharaohAnd to seek shelter in the shadow of Egypt!

“Therefore the safety of Pharaoh will be your shameAnd the shelter in the shadow of Egypt, your humiliation.
