'Know' in the Bible
Then I said, “Alas, Lord God!Behold, I do not know how to speak,Because I am a youth.”
“The priests did not say, ‘Where is the Lord?’And those who handle the law did not know Me;The rulers also transgressed against Me,And the prophets prophesied by BaalAnd walked after things that did not profit.
“Your own wickedness will correct you,And your apostasies will reprove you;Know therefore and see that it is evil and bitterFor you to forsake the Lord your God,And the dread of Me is not in you,” declares the Lord God of hosts.
“How can you say, ‘I am not defiled,I have not gone after the Baals’?Look at your way in the valley!Know what you have done!You are a swift young camel entangling her ways,
“For My people are foolish,They know Me not;They are stupid childrenAnd have no understanding.They are shrewd to do evil,But to do good they do not know.”
Then I said, “They are only the poor,They are foolish;For they do not know the way of the LordOr the ordinance of their God.
“I will go to the greatAnd will speak to them,For they know the way of the LordAnd the ordinance of their God.”But they too, with one accord, have broken the yokeAnd burst the bonds.
“Behold, I am bringing a nation against you from afar, O house of Israel,” declares the Lord.“It is an enduring nation,It is an ancient nation,A nation whose language you do not know,Nor can you understand what they say.
“Were they ashamed because of the abomination they have done?They were not even ashamed at all;They did not even know how to blush.Therefore they shall fall among those who fall;At the time that I punish them,They shall be cast down,” says the Lord.
“Therefore hear, O nations,And know, O congregation, what is among them.
“I have made you an assayer and a tester among My people,That you may know and assay their way.”
“Even the stork in the skyKnows her seasons;And the turtledove and the swift and the thrushObserve the time of their migration;But My people do not knowThe ordinance of the Lord.
“Were they ashamed because of the abomination they had done?They certainly were not ashamed,And they did not know how to blush;Therefore they shall fall among those who fall;At the time of their punishment they shall be brought down,”Says the Lord.
“They bend their tongue like their bow;Lies and not truth prevail in the land;For they proceed from evil to evil,And they do not know Me,” declares the Lord.
“Your dwelling is in the midst of deceit;Through deceit they refuse to know Me,” declares the Lord.
I know, O Lord, that a man’s way is not in himself,Nor is it in a man who walks to direct his steps.
Pour out Your wrath on the nations that do not know YouAnd on the families that do not call Your name;For they have devoured Jacob;They have devoured him and consumed himAnd have laid waste his habitation.
But I was like a gentle lamb led to the slaughter;And I did not know that they had devised plots against me, saying,“Let us destroy the tree with its fruit,And let us cut him off from the land of the living,That his name be remembered no more.”
“Therefore you are to speak this word to them, ‘Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, “Every jug is to be filled with wine.”’ And when they say to you, ‘Do we not very well know that every jug is to be filled with wine?’
‘If I go out to the country,Behold, those slain with the sword!Or if I enter the city,Behold, diseases of famine!For both prophet and priestHave gone roving about in the land that they do not know.’”
We know our wickedness, O Lord,The iniquity of our fathers, for we have sinned against You.
“Then I will cause your enemies to bring itInto a land you do not know;For a fire has been kindled in My anger,It will burn upon you.”
You who know, O Lord,Remember me, take notice of me,And take vengeance for me on my persecutors.Do not, in view of Your patience, take me away;Know that for Your sake I endure reproach.
“Therefore behold, I am going to make them know—This time I will make them knowMy power and My might;And they shall know that My name is the Lord.”
And you will, even of yourself, let go of your inheritanceThat I gave you;And I will make you serve your enemiesIn the land which you do not know;For you have kindled a fire in My angerWhich will burn forever.
“He pled the cause of the afflicted and needy;Then it was well.Is not that what it means to know Me?”Declares the Lord.
I will give them a heart to know Me, for I am the Lord; and they will be My people, and I will be their God, for they will return to Me with their whole heart.
Only know for certain that if you put me to death, you will bring innocent blood on yourselves, and on this city and on its inhabitants; for truly the Lord has sent me to you to speak all these words in your hearing.”
For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope.
They will not teach again, each man his neighbor and each man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them,” declares the Lord, “for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”
‘Call to Me and I will answer you, and I will tell you great and mighty things, which you do not know.’
Then the officials said to Baruch, “Go, hide yourself, you and Jeremiah, and do not let anyone know where you are.”
Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “Let no man know about these words and you will not die.
Then Johanan the son of Kareah spoke secretly to Gedaliah in Mizpah, saying, “Let me go and kill Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and not a man will know! Why should he take your life, so that all the Jews who are gathered to you would be scattered and the remnant of Judah would perish?”
Those who escape the sword will return out of the land of Egypt to the land of Judah few in number. Then all the remnant of Judah who have gone to the land of Egypt to reside there will know whose word will stand, Mine or theirs.
This will be the sign to you,’ declares the Lord, ‘that I am going to punish you in this place, so that you may know that My words will surely stand against you for harm.’
“Mourn for him, all you who live around him,Even all of you who know his name;Say, ‘How has the mighty scepter been broken,A staff of splendor!’
“I know his fury,” declares the Lord,“But it is futile;His idle boasts have accomplished nothing.
