the centurion answered, Lord, I am not worthy the honour of such a visit: do but give the word, and my servant is sav'd. for I am a man under authority, having soldiers under my command: I bid this man, go, and he's gone: another, come, and he's here: and to my servant, do this, and it is done. when Jesus heard it, he was surpriz'd, and said to his followers, I profess I have not met with such an instance of faith, no not in Israel. and I declare unto you, that many shall come from the east and from the west, and shall sit at table with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob in the heavenly kingdom. but the heirs to the kingdom shall be cast into the darkness without: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. and Jesus said to the centurion, go thy way, what you believed could be done, is effected for you. and his servant was healed in that very hour.

When he had finished this discourse to the populous audience, he entred into Capernaum, where a certain centurion had a servant whom he greatly valued, lying sick and ready to die. this centurion having heard of Jesus's fame, sent several elders of the Jews to intreat him to come, and recover his servant.read more.
accordingly they came to Jesus and earnestly pressed him, saying, he very well deserves you should do him this favour; for he loves our nation, and hath built us a synagogue at his own charge. then Jesus went with him, and when he was advanced near the house, the centurion sent some of his friends to him, saying, "Lord, don't give yourself the trouble of coming, I don't deserve you should honour my house with your presence. nor did I think myself worthy to attend you: speak but the word, and my servant shall be cured. for though I am subject to authority, I have soldiers under me: I bid one go, and he goes: I bid another come, and he comes: I bid my servant do this, and he does it." when Jesus heard this, he admired the man, and turning about, he said to the people, that followed him, I assure you, I have not met with such an instance of faith even among the Jews themselves. and they that were sent, being return'd to the house, they found the servant, who had been sick, in good health.

Then Jesus went thence, and retir'd towards the district of Tyre and Sidon. and there came a woman of Canaan from those quarters, and cried out to him, have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of David; my daughter is grievously tormented by a demon. but Jesus not making her any answer, his disciples came and entreated him to grant her request; for, said they, she is very importunate with us.read more.
but he answered, my commission was only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. however she advanc'd, and throwing her self at his feet, cried, O Lord, assist me. but he answered, it is not just to take the childrens bread, and throw it to puppies. 'tis true, Lord, said she: yet even puppies eat of the crumbs which fall from their master's table. then Jesus answered her, O woman, great is thy faith: as you desire, be it done. and her daughter was healed from that very hour.

Jesus leaving that place, went towards the frontiers of Tyre and Sidon; and entring into a house, desired to let nobody know it; but he could not be conceal'd. for a woman, whose child was possess'd with an impure spirit, having heard of him, found him out, and throwing herself at his feet, entreated him to force the demon out of her daughter; now the woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation.read more.
Jesus therefore said to her, let the children first be satisfy'd; for it would not be decent to take the children's bread, and throw it to puppys. she answer'd, true, Lord, yet puppys eat of the crumbs, which children drop under the table. then said Jesus to her, for this expression, go thy way, the demon has left your daughter. accordingly she went home, where she found that the demon was indeed gone out of her daughter, and she was lying on the bed.

Hear another parable: a certain landlord planted a vineyard, hedged it round, set up a wine-press in it, and built a tower, then lett it out to tenants, and went into a foreign country. and when the fruit-season came on, he sent his servants to the tenants, to receive the fruits of it. but they seiz'd his servants, beat some, killed one, and stoned another.read more.
then he sent a greater number of servants, than at first: who met with the same treatment. but last of all, he sent his son, saying, they will reverence my son. but when the tenants saw the son, they said among themselves, this is the heir, come, let us kill him, and then seize on his inheritance. so seizing upon him, they turn'd him out of the vineyard, and slew him. when the master therefore of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants? they answered, he will give those wretches no quarter, and will let out his vineyard to such as shall duly account for the profits thereof. Jesus reply'd, did ye never read in the scriptures, " that very stone which the builders rejected, is become the principal stone of the angle, this the Lord effected, and it is marvellous in our eyes." wherefore I declare to you, the gospel dispensation shall be taken from you, and given to a nation that shall make a proper use thereof.

Then Jesus address'd himself to them in this parabolical manner. a certain person planted a vineyard, made a fence about it, clear'd the way for a wine-press, built a tower, and committed it to the care of vine-dressers, while he was travelling abroad. at the time of vintage he sent his servant to the vine-dressers to receive the profits of his vineyard. but they seized on him, and beat him, and sent him home empty.read more.
after this he sent another servant to them, him they assaulted with stones and cudgels, and sent him back with contempt. then he sent another, whom they killed: and of several more, some they beat, some they killed. at last, having one only son, whom he loved, he sent him to them; surely, said he, they will reverence my son. but these husbandmen said to one another, this is the heir, come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be our own. so they seized upon him, and dragg'd him out of the vineyard, and killed him. now what will the master of the vineyard do? on his return, said they, he will destroy those vine-dressers, and give his vineyard to others. have you not read, said he, this passage of scripture, "the stone which the builders rejected, is become the principal stone of the angle. it is the Lord, that has done this, and it is marvellous in our eyes."

Then he propos'd this parable to the people, a man planted a vineyard, let it out to husbandmen, and then went a travelling for some time. at vintage, he sent a servant to the husbandmen, to demand the profits of the vineyard. but they beat him and sent him away empty. again he sent another servant, him they likewise beat, insulted, and sent away empty.read more.
he still sent a third, whom they wounded and drove away. upon which the master of the vineyard said, what shall I do? I will send my beloved son: perhaps his presence will engage their respect. but when the husbandmen saw him, they said to one another, this is the heir: come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be our own. so they kill'd him, and threw him out of the vineyard. what punishment now will the master inflict upon them? he will come and destroy these husbandmen, and give his vineyard to others. but they, taking the hint, cried out, God forbid.

Now when you shall see Jerusalem invested by an army, then be assured that the desolation of it is nigh. then let those, who are in Judea, fly to the mountains: let those, who are in the city, march out, and those, who are without not venture in. for this is the time of vengeance, when all that is writ, shall be accomplished.read more.
wo to them that are with child, or to them that give suck in those days: for this will be a region of great distress, and wrath will pour down upon this people. by the destructive sword shall they fall, and be led into captivity among all nations: and Jerusalem shall be kept waste by the nations, as long as those nations shall subsist.

Jesus made these twelve his missionaries, and gave them these instructions, don't go any where among the Gentiles, nor enter into any city of the Samaritans. but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

go and instruct all nations, baptizing them in the name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy ghost: teaching them to observe every thing which I have enjoin'd you: and be assured I shall be always with you to the end of the world.

Then he said to them, go ye into all parts of the world, and preach the gospel to all mankind. he that believeth, and is baptized, shall be saved; but he that disbelieves, shall be condemned.

thus it is written, and thus it behov'd Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: and that repentance and remission of sins should be preach'd in his name, among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

said he, how unlawful it is for a Jew, to frequent a stranger, or even to go to his house: but God hath shewed me, that I should not look upon any man as common and unclean.

On the morrow as they were on their journey, and drew nigh the city, Peter went upon the leads to pray, about the sixth hour. and being seiz'd with hunger, he would have had something to eat: but while they were making it ready, he fell into a trance, when he saw the heaven open, and something descending in the form of a great sheet, ty'd at the four corners, and let down to the earth:read more.
in it were all sorts of quadrupeds, reptiles, and birds. and a voice said to him, rise, Peter; kill and eat. but Peter said, not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean. and the voice spake to him again the second time, don't call that common, which God calls clean. this was done thrice: and then the sheet was taken up into heaven. While Peter was perplexed about the signification of this vision, the messengers from Cornelius having enquir'd out Simon's house, arriv'd at the gate, and calling somebody, ask'd, whether Simon Peter lodg'd there. As Peter was still pondering upon the vision, the spirit said to him, there are people below, who enquire for you. rise therefore, get thee down, and go with them, without hesitating: for I have sent them.

saying, as I was at prayers in Joppa, I saw something like a great sheet, tied at the four corners, which descended from heaven, and came just to me. as I was considering it very attentively, I saw several quadrupeds, wild beasts, reptiles and birds. then I heard a voice, which said, rise, Peter; kill and eat.read more.
but I said, Lord, by no means: for I never did eat any thing impure, and defiled. but the voice from heaven address'd it self to me again, and said, don't call that impure, which God has purified. this was done three times, and then the whole scene was mounted to heaven. at that very instant three men, dispatch'd from Cesarea to me, were just arrived at the house, where I was. and the spirit bid me make no difficulty of going with them. these six brethren accompany'd me, and we went together to the man's house. he told us how he had seen an angel, who had presented himself to him, and had said, send to Joppa, to fetch Simon, surnam'd Peter: who will give you such instructions, as will be the means of saving both you and all your family.

Peter was yet speaking, when the holy spirit descended on all that heard him. all the Jewish converts, who came with Paul, were astonished to see that the gift of the holy spirit was diffused likewise among the Gentiles. for they heard them express their praises to God in divers languages.read more.
then Peter said, can we refuse the water of baptism to such as have received the holy spirit as well as we? so he directed they should be baptized in the name of the Lord. after which they desired him to stay some time with them.

and while I was speaking to them, the holy spirit descended upon them, as it did on us, at the beginning.

and after the question had been much canvass'd, Peter rose up, and said, my brethren, you know that a considerable time since God chose me from among you to preach the gospel to the Gentiles, and bring them to the faith. God who knows their hearts has granted them a testimonial, by giving them the holy spirit, even as he did to us:

on the contrary, when they perceived that I had the province of preaching the gospel to the Gentiles, as Peter had that of preaching it to the Jews, (for he that had wrought powerfully in Peter with respect to his apostleship among the Jews, had also wrought powerfully in me upon account of the Gentiles:) and when James, Peter, and John, who were esteemed to be pillars, perceived the favour that was bestowed on me, they admitted me and Barnabas into fellowship, and agreed, that we should go to the Gentiles, and they to the Jews.

go, said the Lord to him: for he is the instrument I have chosen, to bear my name to the Gentiles, to kings, and to the children of Israel.

but the Lord said to me, "be gone, for I will send you far hence, even to the Gentiles."

I answer'd, who art thou, Lord? he said, "I am Jesus, whom thou persecutest. but rise upright upon thy feet: for I have appear'd to thee in order to establish you my minister in testifying both what you have seen, and what I shall hereafter show to you, by delivering you from this people, and from the Gentiles to whom I now send thee, to open their eyes,read more.
and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and partake of the inheritance of the saints, by believing on me." this heavenly vision, king Agrippa, I presently obey'd: first I warn'd the people of Damascus, of Jerusalem, of all Judea, and then the Gentiles, to repent, and turn to God, by acting suitably to their repentance. for such a conduct the Jews seiz'd upon me in the temple, designing to assassinate me; but by the divine favour I am still preserv'd alive, testifying to the small and to the great nothing but what Moses and the prophets have predicted should happen: "that Christ should suffer: that he should be the first that was to rise from the dead: and that he should enlighten both the Jews and the Gentiles."

now I would not have you ignorant, my brethren, that I often purposed to come to you, tho' I have been hindered hitherto, that I might be useful among you as well as among other Gentiles. I owe what service I can do to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians, to the learned, and to the illiterate. so, that as far as it depends upon me, I am ready to preach the gospel to you also, who are at Rome.

this concerns you Gentiles. for as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I should do honour to my character,

nevertheless, brethren, I have writ to the Gentile part of you, and admonish'd you with the greater freedom by virtue of the commission that God has given me, to be the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, officiating the gospel of God, that the Gentiles might be made an acceptable offering, being sanctified by the holy spirit. I have therefore matter of glorying thro' Jesus Christ, with respect to divine service.read more.
for I will not offer to mention any thing, but what Christ has wrought by me, to make the Gentiles christians, both in profession and practice: by virtue of the miracles and prodigies wrought by the power of the divine spirit; so that from Jerusalem, and the neighbouring country, quite to Illyricum,

and I went up according to revelation, and communicated to them that gospel, which I preach among the Gentiles; but privately to those who were of note, lest the pains, that I have already taken, or may hereafter take in the gospel, should be in vain.

This it is that makes me Paul a prisoner for Jesus Christ upon your account, O Gentiles;

for this I was establish'd a herald and an apostle, I speak the truth without disguise, a doctor to instruct the Gentiles in the true faith.

however the Lord assisted and strengthen'd me, that the gospel might be confirm'd by my remonstrance, and all the nations might hear it; so that I was deliver'd out of the mouth of the lion:

but as they oppos'd him with invectives, he shook his garment, and said, "you your selves be answerable for your own destruction, I am clear: and for the future I shall address my self to the Gentiles."

but Paul and Barnabas told them boldly, you indeed were the first, to whom the word of God was to be preach'd: but since you reject it, and judge your own selves unworthy of eternal life, be assur'd, we shall make the same offer to the Gentiles:

take notice therefore, that the offers of divine salvation are sent to the Gentiles, and they will receive them.

when the Gentiles heard this, they received the word with joy, glorifying the Lord: and as many as were dispos'd to eternal life, believed.

Being arriv'd at Iconium, they went both together to the Jewish synagogue, where they discours'd in such a manner, that a great number both of Jews and of Greeks believed. but the disbelieving Jews practis'd upon the Gentiles, and inflam'd their minds against the brethren.

The whole assembly were very silent, whilst Barnabas and Paul related what miracles and prodigies God had wrought among the Gentiles by their ministry.

after having saluted them, he gave a particular account of what God had wrought by his ministry among the Gentiles.

we preach Christ crucified, an obstacle to the Jews indeed, and to the Gentiles foolishness: but to those who believe, both Jews and Gentiles, he is the Christ, the power of God, and the wisdom of God.

and when Peter was return'd to Jerusalem, the Jewish converts objected to his conduct, and ask'd him, why did you go to eat with the uncircumcised?

and while I was speaking to them, the holy spirit descended upon them, as it did on us, at the beginning. then I remember'd that expression of the Lord, "John baptized with water, but ye shall be baptized with the holy spirit." if therefore God has bestow'd the same favour upon them, as on us, after we had believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, how could I make any opposition to the divine will?read more.
Having heard this, they were appeas'd, and glorified God, saying, God has then granted salvation likewise to the gentiles, on the terms of their repentance.

God who knows their hearts has granted them a testimonial, by giving them the holy spirit, even as he did to us: making no difference between us and them, having purified their hearts by the faith. why therefore do you tempt God to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither we nor our forefathers were able to bear? but we believe that it is by the favour of the Lord Jesus Christ, that we are to be sav'd, as well as they. After they had done speaking, James assum'd the discourse, and said, my brethren, give me your attention. Simon has related how God began to visit the Gentiles, to chuse from among them a people consecrated to his name. and this is agreeable to the oracles of the prophets: as it is written, "after this I will return and build again the tabernacle of David, which is fallen down: I will repair its ruins, and raise it up: that the rest of mankind, even all the nations, that profess my name, may seek the Lord. he that does all these things, is the Lord himself that has said it." for the works of God are all known to him from the beginning of the world. wherefore my opinion is not to disquiet the Gentile converts: but only to write to them, that they abstain from the pollutions of idols, from fornication, from animals that are strangled, and from their blood. for as to the law of Moses, that has been published in every city a considerable time, being read in the synagogues every sabbath-day. Then the apostles, the presbyters, and the whole church thought it proper to select some out of their own body to accompany Paul and Barnabas to Antioch: such as Judas surnam'd Barsabas, and Silas, leading men among the brethren, whom they charg'd with this letter. The apostles, the presbyters, and the brethren, to the Gentile brethren at Antioch, in Syria, and Cilicia, send greeting. Whereas we have been appriz'd, that some who went from us, have embarass'd you with their discourse, and unsettled your minds, maintaining, that you ought to be circumcised, and to observe the law, though we gave them no such injunction: after having been assembled, we unanimously judg'd it proper to send particular deputies to you, with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, men that have exposed their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. we therefore send Judas and Silas to inform you in person of this affair. for by the holy spirit it seemed good to us, to lay no greater burthen upon you, than these necessary injunctions; that you abstain from what has been sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the flesh of strangled animals, and from fornication: you will do well to preserve your selves from these practices. farewel. Being thus dispatch'd, they went to Antioch; where having assembled all the faithful, they deliver'd the letter: from the reading of which, they were affected with joy at the comfortable contents, as for Judas and Silas,

Fourteen years after I went up again to Jerusalem, with Barnabas, and took Titus also with me: and I went up according to revelation, and communicated to them that gospel, which I preach among the Gentiles; but privately to those who were of note, lest the pains, that I have already taken, or may hereafter take in the gospel, should be in vain. however, Titus who was then with me, being a Greek, was not compelled to be circumcised:read more.
and as to the false brethren, who insidiously crept in to spy out our liberty which we have by Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into servitude; I did not show them the lest compliance by way of submission, that the doctrine of the gospel might remain among you.

Stand fast therefore, and be not hampered again with the yoke of bondage. take notice, 'tis I Paul declare it to you, that if you are circumcised, Christ shall be of no advantage to you. for I testify to every man that is circumcised, that he is under an obligation to perform the whole law.read more.
Christ is of no use to you, whoever of you seek to be justified by the law; you have lost all interest in the gospel-dispensation. but as for us, our minds are possessed with the hopes of justification by faith. for in the christian-dispensation, neither circumcision avails any thing, nor uncircumcision, but an active benevolent faith.

but now you who were formerly at a distance, are brought near by the death of Christ Jesus.

and they sung a new song, saying, "thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood, out of every tribe, and language, and people, and nation; and hast made us kings and priests unto our God: and we shall reign on the earth."

is God the God of the Jews only, and not of the Gentiles? surely he is of the Gentiles too;

You will say then, "were they suffer'd to stumble meerly for their ruin?" no: but that thro' their fall, salvation might be offer'd to the Gentiles, in order to provoke their emulation. now if their fall be to the advancement of the world, and the few converts among them bring in whole numbers of the Gentiles: how much more so will it be, when the Jewish body recover? this concerns you Gentiles. for as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I should do honour to my character,read more.
if I could by any means excite the emulation of my dear countrymen, in order to save some. for, if by rejecting them, the world may be reconciled; what shall their restoration be, but a general resurrection? Now if the first-fruits be holy, so is the whole product: and if the root be holy, so are the branches. if then, some of the branches are broken off, and thou like a wild olive, were grafted in their place to partake of the root and sap of the olivestock; don't triumph over the branches: or if you do, remember the root is not dependent upon you, but you upon the root. you will say then, "the branches were broken off, that I might be grafted in." well, be it so, for their incredulity they were broken off, and you by faith stand firm: be not then elated, but let this be your fear, lest God should not spare you, since he did not spare even the natural branches.

and if you belong to Christ, you are Abraham's offspring, and his heirs by virtue of the promise.

After this I beheld, and there was a great multitude, which no man could number, of every nation, tribe, people, and language, who stood before the throne, and before the lamb cloathed in white robes, having palms in their hands.

Then I saw another angel fly in the mid-heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach to those that dwell on the earth, to every nation, tribe, province, and people, crying with a loud voice,

there is now no distinction of Jew or Greek, of bond or free, of male or female: for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

tribulation and anguish to every one that doth evil, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile. but glory, honour, and peace, to every man that acts right, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile: since with God there is no respect of persons.

Therefore now, you are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow-citizens with the saints, and domesticks of God's family, being built upon the foundation laid by the apostles and prophets, whereof Jesus Christ himself is the main stone of the angle:

by which there is now neither Greek, or Jew; circumcised, or uncircumcised; Barbarian, or Scythian; slave, or freeman; but Christ is all, and in all.

other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring; they will hear my voice; and so there shall be but one fold, and one pastor.

for thus has the Lord commanded us, "I have appointed you to be a light to the Gentiles, that you should bring salvation to the remotest parts of the earth." when the Gentiles heard this, they received the word with joy, glorifying the Lord: and as many as were dispos'd to eternal life, believed.

to such as we, whom he has called, both from among the Jews, and from among the Gentiles. as he saith himself in Osee, "I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her, beloved, which was not beloved. and it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, ye are not my people; there shall they be called, the children of the living God."

both Jews and Gentiles, he is the Christ, the power of God, and the wisdom of God. for this divine doctrine, as foolish and weak as men may think it, far surpasses all their wisdom, and baffles all their power.

As Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness: so hence ye know, that it is they who believe who are the children of Abraham. and the scripture insinuating, that God would justify the Gentiles thro' faith, gave Abraham an intimation of the gospel in these words, " in thee shall all nations be blessed."read more.
so that it is they who believe, who are blessed with Abraham, who did believe. but they that rest themselves upon the works of the law, are obnoxious to the curse: for it is written, " cursed is every one, who continueth not in all things, which are written in the book of the law, to do them:" but that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, is evident: for, " the just shall live by faith." now the law does not justify by FAITH, but says, "he that DOES these things shall live by them." Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us. (for it is written, " cursed is every one, that hangeth upon a tree.") that the blessing promised to Abraham might come on the Gentiles thro' Jesus Christ; that we by believing might receive the spirit that was promised.

Is this happiness then for the circumcised only, or for the uncircumcised also? for we say that faith was accounted to Abraham for righteousness. how was it then accounted? whilst he was circumcised, or uncircumcised? he was not then circumcised, but uncircumcised: and he received the sign of circumcision, as a seal of the justification by that faith, which the uncircumcised have: that he might be the father of all those who believe, tho' they are uncircumcised, that it might be accounted to them also for righteousness:read more.
and the father of the circumcised, that is of those who are not barely circumcised, but who imitate that faith which our father Abraham had, being yet uncircumcised.

for in the christian-dispensation, neither circumcision avails any thing, nor uncircumcision, but an active benevolent faith.
