the mystery of piety is the pillar and basts of truth; and certainly most extraordinary. God has appear'd in the flesh, been justified by the spirit, seen by angels, proclaim'd to the Gentiles, believ'd by the world, and assum'd into glory.

it is an undoubted truth, that if we die for him, we shall live with him: if we suffer, we shall also reign: if we renounce him, he will renounce us likewise: tho' we are diffident, he is still faithful, and will not retract his word.

Therefore omitting for the present the principles of the christian doctrine, we shall proceed to something more sublime, without mentioning those fundamental articles of repentance from destructive vices, and of divine faith: the doctrine of baptisms, and laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment:

I certify to you, brethren, that the gospel, which has been preached by me, is not the result of human artifice: for I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.

the law indeed was delivered by Moses, but grace and truth was the dispensation of Jesus Christ.

but now ye seek to kill me, the man who has told you the truth, such as I have learnt it of God: Abraham did not act thus.

for, the information we gave you of the powerful advent of our Lord Jesus Christ, did not proceed from any artfully contriv'd fables, we our selves having been spectators of his majesty.

After they had preach'd the gospel in that city, and made many disciples, they retook the road to Lystra, Iconium and Antioch, encouraging the disciples, exhorting them to persevere in the faith, representing that it is thro' much tribulation that we must enter into the kingdom of God.

Be upon the watch, stand firm in the faith, behave your selves like men of fortitude:

which consideration persuades me that I shall abide, and even continue some time with you all, to improve your advancement in the faith, and to promote your joy:

continue therefore to follow the doctrine of our Lord Jesus Christ, as you have receiv'd it: being firmly attach'd to, and founded upon him: establishing yourselves in the faith you have been taught, and being thankful for the improvement you make therein.

if they shall fall away, to re-instate themselves by repentance: seeing, as far in them lies, they crucify the son of God afresh, and expose him to open shame.

but Elymas (a name which signifies Magus) opposed them, endeavouring to seduce the proconsul from the faith.

Examine yourselves, whether you be in the faith; bring yourselves to the proof; are you so little acquainted with yourselves, as not to know whether Jesus Christ be in you? but if you are destitute of proofs, I trust you shall know that we are not so destitute,

he that takes no care of his relations, especially those of his own family, has renounc'd the faith and is worse than an infidel.

only conduct yourselves in a manner becoming the gospel of Christ, that whether I come to see you, or else am absent, I may have this account of you, that you are stedfastly of the same resolution, and unanimously contend for the faith of the gospel,

Now the spirit says expresly, that in the latter times some shall abandon the faith, by giving credit to seducing spirits, and the doctrine concerning demons; broach'd by hypocrititical impostors, whose consciences are cauteriz'd, interdicting marriage; and the use of animal food; which God created for the repast of the faithful, who embrace the truth with thankfulness.read more.
for all that God has created is good, and nothing is to be rejected, provided it be receiv'd with thanksgiving: since it is sanctified by the divine permission, and by prayer. If you represent these things to the brethren, you will appear to be a true minister of Jesus Christ, brought up in the institutions of faith, and the true doctrine to which you were attach'd.

adore the Lord God in your hearts, and be ready to show with modesty and respect to every one that asks it, what ground there is for the expectations you have:

a bishop therefore ought to be of an unspotted character, to have but one wife, to be sober, prudent, grave, hospitable, and qualified for teaching:

but by their integrity maintain the reverence due to the gospel.

exert yourself in the glorious cause of faith, and secure the prize of eternal life, to which you were called, when you made that excellent profession of faith before so many witnesses.
