And not many days after the younger son gathered all together and went abroad into a distant country, and there squandered away his substance by living luxuriously. And when he had spent all, there happen'd a grievous famine in that country, and he began to be in want. And he went and let himself to one of the people of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed swine.read more.
And he would gladly have filled his belly with the husks which the swine did eat: and no man relieved him.

And He said also to his disciples, There was a certain rich man, who had a steward; and he was accused to him of wasting his goods.

Weep now, ye rich men, and howl for your miseries which are coming upon you. Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten: your gold and silver is cankered, and their rust shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh like fire: ye have been treasuring them up for these last days.read more.
Behold the hire of the laborers, that reaped your fields, of which they are defrauded by you, crieth out against you: and the complaints of the reapers are come into the ears of the Lord of hosts. Ye have lived upon earth delicately and luxuriously; ye fattened your hearts as in a day of slaughter. Ye have condemned, ye have murdered the just one, who resisted you not.

For the time past of our life is sufficient for us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, walking in lasciviousness, inordinate desires, excess of wine, revellings, drunkenness, and abominable idolatries: in which they think it strange that ye run not with them into the same excess of riot, and therefore speak evil of you: who shall give an account to Him, who is ready to judge the living and the dead.

And when they were filled, He saith to his disciples, Gather up the fragments that are left, that nothing may be lost. They therefore gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley-loaves, which remained after they had eaten.

Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while the light is to be with you; walk while ye have the light, least darkness overtake you; for he that walketh in the dark knoweth not whither he goeth. While ye have the light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and then went away, and concealed himself from them.

And we co-operating with Him do also exhort you that ye receive not the grace of God in vain:

But now that ye know God, or rather are known by God, how is it that ye turn again to the poor weak elements, to which ye desire again to be in bondage as before? Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years: so that I am afraid for you, least I have indeed bestowed upon you labour in vain.

For if we sin wilfully after having received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins; but a dreadful expectation of judgement, and a fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. For as a man, who was going to travel abroad, called his servants, and delivered to them his stock: and to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to each according to his ability: and then he took his journey. And he also who received the one talent came to him and said, Sir, I knew thee that thou art a hard man, reaping where thou sowedst not, and gathering where thou hast not strewed; and I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the ground; behold, there is thine own: but his lord answered and said to him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strewed; thou oughtest then to have put my money to the bankers, and when I came I should have received my own with interest. Take ye therefore the talent from him, and give it to him that hath the ten talents; (for to every one that hath shall be given, and he shall abound; but from him that hath not, even what he hath, or seemeth to have, shall be taken away:) and cast out the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness, where there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a distant country to receive the investiture of a kingdom and then to return. And he called ten of his servants, and delivered to them ten pounds, and said, Trade with them till I come. But his citizens hated him, and sent an embassy after him, saying, We will not have this man to reign over us.read more.
And when he was returned, having received the kingdom, he ordered these servants to be called to him, to whom he had delivered the money, that he might know what use each had made of it. Then came the first and said, Lord, thy pound hath gained ten pounds. And he said to him, Well done, thou good servant, as thou hast been faithful in a very little, thou shalt be governor over ten cities. And the second came, saying, Lord, thy pound hath produced five pounds: and he said to this likewise, Be thou also over five cities. And another came, and said, Behold, my Lord, thy pound, which I have kept laid up in a napkin: for I was afraid of thee, because thou art an austere man, who takest up what thou didst not lay down, and reapest what thou didst not sow. But he said to him, Out of thy own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant, Thou knewest that I am an austere man, taking up what I laid not down, and reaping what I did not sow; and why then didst thou not put my money into the bank, that when I came I might have received it with interest? And he said to them that stood by, Take away the pound from him, and give it to him that hath the ten pounds. (And they said unto him, Lord, he hath ten pounds already:) for I tell you, that to every one that hath shall be given; but from him that hath not, even what he seemingly hath shall be taken away. But those mine enemies, who would not have me to reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me.

I must perform the works of Him that sent me, while it is day: the night is coming, when no man can work.

And therefore as we have opportunity, let us do good to all men, but especially to those who are of the houshold of faith.

Give not that which is holy unto dogs, nor cast your pearls before swine; least they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you.

And when Jesus was at Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, there came to Him a woman with an alabaster-box of very precious ointment, and poured it on his head as He was at table: but when his disciples saw it, they were some of them provoked at it, and said, Wherefore is this waste?read more.
for this ointment might have been sold for a great deal of money, and given to the poor. But Jesus, knowing what passed, said to them, Why do ye give the woman uneasiness? for she has done a good office to me: (seeing ye have the poor always with you, but me ye have not always:) for in pouring this ointment on my body, she has embalmed me for my burial. Verily I tell you, wherever this gospel is preached, in the whole world, what she hath done shall also be spoken of for a memorial of her.

Therefore they made Him a supper there, and Martha waited at table, but Lazarus was one of them that sat down with Him. And Mary taking a pound of ointment of spikenard of great value, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped them with her hair; and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.read more.
Therefore said one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, who was about to betray Him, Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence and given to the poor? He said this, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and having the common purse he carried what was put into it. Jesus therefore said, Let her alone, she hath reserved this as for the day of my burial. For the poor ye have always with you, but me ye have not always.

For which cause we are not disheartened: but though our outward man decayeth, yet the inward man is renewed daily.
