'Saying' in the Bible
Her leaders issue rulings for a bribe,her priests teach for payment,and her prophets practice divination for money.Yet they lean on the Lord, saying,“Isn’t the Lord among us?No disaster will overtake us.”
Now listen to what the Lord is saying:Rise, plead your case before the mountains,and let the hills hear your voice.
Then all who see you will recoil from you, saying,“Nineveh is devastated;who will show sympathy to her?”Where can I find anyone to comfort you?
Then He summoned me saying, “See, those going to the land of the north have pacified My Spirit in the northern land.”
the residents of one city will go to another, saying: Let’s go at once to plead for the Lord’s favor and to seek the Lord of Hosts. I am also going.
But after he had considered these things, an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, don’t be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because what has been conceived in her is by the Holy Spirit.
saying, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him.”
After they were gone, an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, “Get up! Take the child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you. For Herod is about to search for the child to destroy Him.”
saying, “Get up! Take the child and His mother and go to the land of Israel, because those who sought the child’s life are dead.”
and saying, “Repent, because the kingdom of heaven has come near!”
But John tried to stop Him, saying, “I need to be baptized by You, and yet You come to me?”
Then He began to teach them, saying:
So don’t worry, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear?’
Right away a man with a serious skin disease came up and knelt before Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.”
Reaching out His hand He touched him, saying, “I am willing; be made clean.” Immediately his disease was healed.
So the disciples came and woke Him up, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to die!”
Then John’s disciples came to Him, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but Your disciples do not fast?”
As He was telling them these things, suddenly one of the leaders came and knelt down before Him, saying, “My daughter is near death, but come and lay Your hand on her, and she will live.”
Then He touched their eyes, saying, “Let it be done for you according to your faith!”
When the demon had been driven out, the man spoke. And the crowds were amazed, saying, “Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel!”
Then He told them many things in parables, saying: “Consider the sower who went out to sow.
But He told them, “Not everyone can accept this saying, but only those it has been given to.
When He entered Jerusalem, the whole city was shaken, saying, “Who is this?”
And the crowds kept saying, “This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee!”
and said to Him, “Do You hear what these children are saying?”“Yes,” Jesus told them. “Have you never read:You have prepared praisefrom the mouths of children and nursing infants?”
For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and they will deceive many.
When Jesus had finished saying all this, He told His disciples,
After leaving them, He went away again and prayed a third time, saying the same thing once more.
and saying, “The One who would demolish the sanctuary and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross!”
Then they were all amazed, so they began to argue with one another, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.”
Immediately he got up, picked up the mat, and went out in front of everyone. As a result, they were all astounded and gave glory to God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”
because they were saying, “He has an unclean spirit.”
Then He sent him home, saying, “Don’t even go into the village.”
When Jesus saw that a crowd was rapidly coming together, He rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You mute and deaf spirit, I command you: come out of him and never enter him again!”
So they were even more astonished, saying to one another, “Then who can be saved?”
“He still had one to send, a beloved son. Finally he sent him to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’
Many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am He,’ and they will deceive many.
Once again He went away and prayed, saying the same thing.
Then some began to spit on Him, to blindfold Him, and to beat Him, saying, “Prophesy!” The temple police also took Him and slapped Him.
Those who passed by were yelling insults at Him, shaking their heads, and saying, “Ha! The One who would demolish the sanctuary and build it in three days,
In the same way, the chief priests with the scribes were mocking Him to one another and saying, “He saved others; He cannot save Himself!
They were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone from the entrance to the tomb for us?”
All who heard about him took it to heart, saying, “What then will this child become?” For, indeed, the Lord’s hand was with him.
Suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying:
Therefore produce fruit consistent with repentance. And don’t start saying to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father,’ for I tell you that God is able to raise up children for Abraham from these stones!
He began by saying to them, “Today as you listen, this Scripture has been fulfilled.”
Amazement came over them all, and they kept saying to one another, “What is this message? For He commands the unclean spirits with authority and power, and they come out!”
Also, demons were coming out of many, shouting and saying, “You are the Son of God!” But He rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew He was the Messiah.
Reaching out His hand, He touched him, saying, “I am willing; be made clean,” and immediately the disease left him.
When they reached Jesus, they pleaded with Him earnestly, saying, “He is worthy for You to grant this,
Then fear came over everyone, and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has risen among us,” and “God has visited His people.”
They came and woke Him up, saying, “Master, Master, we’re going to die!” Then He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waves. So they ceased, and there was a calm.
While He was still speaking, someone came from the synagogue leader’s house, saying, “Your daughter is dead. Don’t bother the Teacher anymore.”
saying, “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and be raised the third day.”
While he was saying this, a cloud appeared and overshadowed them. They became afraid as they entered the cloud.
Then a voice came from the cloud, saying:This is My Son, the Chosen One;listen to Him!
The Seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in Your name.”
Just then an expert in the law stood up to test Him, saying, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
As He was saying these things, a woman from the crowd raised her voice and said to Him, “The womb that bore You and the one who nursed You are blessed!”
As the crowds were increasing, He began saying: “This generation is an evil generation. It demands a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.
once the homeowner gets up and shuts the door. Then you will stand outside and knock on the door, saying, ‘Lord, open up for us!’ He will answer you, ‘I don’t know you or where you’re from.’
saying, ‘This man started to build and wasn’t able to finish.’
and coming home, he calls his friends and neighbors together, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, because I have found my lost sheep!’
When she finds it, she calls her women friends and neighbors together, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, because I have found the silver coin I lost!’
And if he sins against you seven times in a day, and comes back to you seven times, saying, ‘I repent,’ you must forgive him.”
and raised their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!”
And a widow in that town kept coming to him, saying, ‘Give me justice against my adversary.’
“But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even raise his eyes to heaven but kept striking his chest and saying, ‘God, turn Your wrath from me—a sinner!’
They understood none of these things. This saying was hidden from them, and they did not grasp what was said.
“But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We don’t want this man to rule over us!’
saying, “If you knew this day what would bring peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes.
Then He said, “Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am He,’ and, ‘The time is near.’ Don’t follow them.
Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover meal for us, so we can eat it.”
And they were saying many other blasphemous things against Him.
They began to accuse Him, saying, “We found this man subverting our nation, opposing payment of taxes to Caesar, and saying that He Himself is the Messiah, a King.”
And Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into Your hands I entrust My spirit.” Saying this, He breathed His last.
When the centurion saw what happened, he began to glorify God, saying, “This man really was righteous!”
saying, ‘The Son of Man must be betrayed into the hands of sinful men, be crucified, and rise on the third day’?”
And as they were saying these things, He Himself stood among them. He said to them, “Peace to you!”
Jesus answered, “If you knew the gift of God, and who is saying to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would ask Him, and He would give you living water.”
For in this case the saying is true: ‘One sows and another reaps.’
While he was still going down, his slaves met him saying that his boy was alive.
They were saying, “Isn’t this Jesus the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can He now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?”
The Jews were looking for Him at the festival and saying, “Where is He?”
And there was a lot of discussion about Him among the crowds. Some were saying, “He’s a good man.” Others were saying, “No, on the contrary, He’s deceiving the people.”
Some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, “Isn’t this the man they want to kill?
Yet, look! He’s speaking publicly and they’re saying nothing to Him. Can it be true that the authorities know He is the Messiah?
As He was saying these things, many believed in Him.
The Jews responded to Him, “Aren’t we right in saying that You’re a Samaritan and have a demon?”
Some said, “He’s the one.” “No,” others were saying, “but he looks like him.”He kept saying, “I’m the one!”
Therefore some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for He doesn’t keep the Sabbath!” But others were saying, “How can a sinful man perform such signs?” And there was a division among them.
Many of them were saying, “He has a demon and He’s crazy! Why do you listen to Him?”
Others were saying, “These aren’t the words of someone demon-possessed. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”
Having said this, she went back and called her sister Mary, saying in private, “The Teacher is here and is calling for you.”
They said, “What is this He is saying, ‘A little while’? We don’t know what He’s talking about!”
When He had said these things, one of the temple police standing by slapped Jesus, saying, “Is this the way you answer the high priest?”
After saying this, He breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
He said this to signify by what kind of death he would glorify God. After saying this, He told him, “Follow Me!”
And they were astounded and amazed, saying, “Look, aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans?
They were all astounded and perplexed, saying to one another, “What could this be?”
