The Coming Day Of The Lord

1 This is the second letter I have already written to you, beloved, stirring up your pure mind by way of reminder,

1 This is now, (A)beloved, the second letter I am writing to you in which I am (B)stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder,

1 This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance:

1 Dear friends, this is now the second letter(A) I have written to you; in both letters, I want to develop a genuine(B) understanding with a reminder,

1 Dear friends, this is now the second of two letters I am writing to you, in which I have been trying to stimulate your pure minds by reminding you

2 to have you recollect the words spoken by the holy prophets beforehand and the command given by your apostles from the Lord and saviour.

2 that you should (C)remember the words spoken beforehand by (D)the holy prophets and (E)the commandment of the Lord and Savior spoken by your apostles.

2 That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour:

2 so that you can remember the words previously spoken by the holy prophets and the command of our Lord and Savior given through your apostles.

2 to recall the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets and the commandment of our Lord and Savior spoken through your apostles.

3 To begin with, you know that mockers will come with their mockeries in the last days, men who go by their own passions,

3 (F)Know this first of all, that (G)in the last days (H)mockers will come with their mocking, (I)following after their own lusts,

3 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,

3 First, be aware of this: Scoffers will come in the last days(C) to scoff, living according to their own desires,

3 First of all you must understand this: In the last days mockers will come and, following their own desires, will ridicule us

4 asking, "Where is His promised advent? Since the day our fathers fell asleep, things remain exactly as they were from the beginning of creation."

4 and saying, “(J)Where is the promise of His (K)coming? For ever since the fathers (L)fell asleep, all continues just as it was (M)from the beginning of creation.”

4 And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.

4 saying, “Where is the promise of His coming?(D) Ever since the fathers fell asleep,(E) all things continue as they have been since the beginning of creation.”

4 by saying, "What happened to the Messiah's promise to return? Ever since our ancestors died, everything continues as it did from the beginning of creation."

5 They wilfully ignore the fact that heavens existed long ago, and an earth which the word of God formed of water and by water.

5 For (a)when they maintain this, it escapes their notice that (N)by the word of God the heavens existed long ago and the earth was (O)formed out of water and by water,

5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:

5 They willfully ignore this: Long ago the heavens and the earth were brought about from water and through water(F) by the word of God.(G)

5 But they deliberately ignore the fact that long ago the heavens existed and the earth was formed by God's word out of water and with water,

6 By water the then-existing world was deluged and destroyed,

6 through which (P)the world at that time was (Q)destroyed, being flooded with water.

6 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:

6 Through these waters the world of that time perished when it was flooded.(H)

6 by which the world at that time was deluged with water and destroyed.

7 but the present heavens and earth are treasured up by the same word for fire, reserved for the day when the impious are doomed and destroyed.

7 But by His word (R)the present heavens and earth are being reserved for (S)fire, kept for (T)the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.

7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

7 But by the same word,(I) the present heavens and earth are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment(J) and destruction of ungodly men.

7 Now by that same word, the present heavens and earth have been reserved for fire and are being kept for the day when ungodly people will be judged and destroyed.

8 Beloved, you must not ignore this one fact, that with the Lord a single day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a single day.

8 But do not let this one fact escape your notice, (U)beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and (V)a thousand years like one day.

8 But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

8 Dear friends, don’t let this one thing escape you: With the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day.(K)

8 Don't forget this fact, dear friends: With the Lord a single day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a single day.

9 The Lord is not slow with what he promises, according to certain people's idea of slowness; no, he is longsuffering for your sake, he does not wish any to perish but all to betake them to repentance.

9 (W)The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but (X)is patient toward you, (Y)not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.

9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

9 The Lord does not delay His promise,(L) as some understand delay, but is patient with you, not wanting any(M) to perish(N) but all to come to repentance.(O)

9 The Lord is not slow about his promise, as some people understand slowness, but is being patient with you. He does not want anyone to perish, but wants everyone to repent.

10 The day of the Lord will come like a thief, when the heavens will vanish with crackling roar, the stars will be set ablaze and melt, the earth and all its works will disappear.

10 But (Z)the day of the Lord (AA)will come like a thief, in which (AB)the heavens (AC)will pass away with a roar and the (AD)elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and (AE)the earth and (b)its works will be (c)burned up.

10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

10 But the Day of the Lord(P) will come like a thief;(a)(Q) on that day the heavens will pass away(R) with a loud noise, the elements will burn and be dissolved,(S) and the earth and the works on it will be disclosed.(b)

10 But the Day of the Lord will come like a thief. On that day the heavens will disappear with a roaring sound, the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done on it will be exposed.

11 Now as all things are thus to be dissolved, what holy and pious men ought you to be in your behaviour,

11 Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness,

11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,

11 Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, it is clear what sort of people you should be in holy conduct and godliness

11 Since everything will be destroyed in this way, think of the kind of holy and godly people you ought to be

12 you who expect and hasten the advent of the Day of God, which dissolves the heavens in fire and makes the stars blaze and melt!

12 (AF)looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which (AG)the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the (AH)elements will melt with intense heat!

12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?

12 as you wait for and earnestly desire the coming(c) of the day of God.(T) The heavens will be on fire and be dissolved because of it, and the elements will melt with the heat.

12 as you look forward to and hasten the coming of the day of God, when the heavens will be set ablaze and dissolved and the elements will melt with fire.

13 It is new heavens and a new earth that we expect, as He has promised, and in them dwells righteousness.

13 But according to His (AI)promise we are looking for (AJ)new heavens and a new earth, (AK)in which righteousness dwells.

13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

13 But based on His promise, we wait for the new heavens and a new earth,(U) where righteousness will dwell.(V)

13 But in keeping with his promise, we are looking forward to new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness is at home.

Final Exhortations And Conclusion

14 Then, beloved, as you are expecting this, be eager to be found by him unspotted and unblemished in serene assurance.

14 (AL)Therefore, (AM)beloved, since you look for these things, be diligent to be (AN)found by Him in peace, (AO)spotless and blameless,

14 Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.

14 Therefore, dear friends, while you wait for these things, make every effort to be found at peace with Him without spot or blemish.(W)

14 So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to have the Lord find you at peace and without spot or fault.

15 And consider that the longsuffering of our Lord means salvation; as indeed our beloved brother Paul has written to you out of the wisdom vouchsafed to him,

15 and regard the (AP)patience of our Lord as salvation; just as also (AQ)our beloved brother Paul, (AR)according to the wisdom given him, wrote to you,

15 And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;

15 Also, regard the patience of our Lord as an opportunity for salvation, just as our dear brother Paul has written to you according to the wisdom given to him.(X)

15 Think of our Lord's patience as facilitating salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given him.

16 speaking of this as he has done in all his letters ??letters containing some knotty points, which ignorant and unsteady souls twist (as they do the rest of the scriptures) to their own destruction.

16 as also in all his letters, speaking in them of (AS)these things, (AT)in which are some things hard to understand, which the untaught and (AU)unstable distort, as they do also (AV)the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction.

16 As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.

16 He speaks about these things in all his letters in which there are some matters that are hard to understand. The untaught and unstable twist them to their own destruction,(Y) as they also do with the rest of the Scriptures.

16 He speaks about this subject in all his letters. Some things in them are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, leading to their own destruction, as they do the rest of the Scriptures.

17 Now, beloved, you are forewarned: mind you are not carried away by the error of the lawless and so lose your proper footing;

17 You therefore, (AW)beloved, knowing this beforehand, (AX)be on your guard so that you are not carried away by (AY)the error of (AZ)unprincipled men and (BA)fall from your own steadfastness,

17 Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.

17 Therefore, dear friends, since you know this in advance, be on your guard,(Z) so that you are not led away by the error of lawless people and fall from your own stability.

17 And so, dear friends, since you already know these things, continuously be on your guard not to be carried away by the deception of lawless people. Otherwise, you may fall from your secure position.

18 but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and saviour Jesus Christ. To him be the glory now and to the day of eternity: Amen.

18 but grow in the grace and (BB)knowledge of our (BC)Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. (BD)To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

18 But grow in the grace and knowledge(AA) of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity.(d)(AB) Amen.(e)

18 Instead, continue to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus, the Messiah. Glory belongs to him both now and on that eternal day! Amen.
