Pharaoh Rejects Yahweh's Authority

1 And afterwards, Moses and Aaron went in and said unto Pharaoh, - Thus, saith Yahweh God of Israel, Let my people go, that they may hold a festival to me in the desert.

1 And afterward Moses and Aaron went in, and told Pharaoh, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Let my people go, that they may hold a feast unto me in the wilderness.

1 And afterward Moses and Aaron came and said to Pharaoh, “(A)Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘(B)Let My people go that they may celebrate a feast to Me in the wilderness.’”

1 Later, Moses and Aaron went in and said to Pharaoh, “This is what Yahweh, the God of Israel, says: Let My people go, so that they may hold a festival for Me in the wilderness.”(A)

1 After Moses and Aaron arrived, they told Pharaoh, "This is what the LORD God of Israel says: "Let my people go so they may make a pilgrimage for me in the desert.'"

2 Then said Pharaoh, Who is Yahweh that I should hearken to his voice, to let Israel go? I know not Yahweh, and certainly. Israel, will I not let go!

2 And Pharaoh said, Who is the LORD, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I know not the LORD, neither will I let Israel go.

2 But Pharaoh said, “(C)Who is the Lord that I should obey His voice to let Israel go? I do not know the Lord, and besides, (D)I will not let Israel go.”

2 But Pharaoh responded, “Who is Yahweh that I should obey Him by letting Israel go? I do not know anything about Yahweh, and besides, I will not let Israel go.”(B)

2 Pharaoh said, "Who is the LORD that I should listen to him and let Israel go? I don't know about the LORD, nor will I let Israel go!"

3 And they said, the God of the Hebrews, hath met with us, - let us go, we pray thee, a journey of three days into the desert and sacrifice to Yahweh our God, lest he fall upon us with pestilence or with sword.

3 And they said, The God of the Hebrews hath met with us: let us go, we pray thee, three days' journey into the desert, and sacrifice unto the LORD our God; lest he fall upon us with pestilence, or with the sword.

3 Then they said, “(E)The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Please, let us go a three days’ journey into the wilderness that we may sacrifice to the Lord our God, otherwise He will fall upon us with pestilence or with the sword.”

3 Then they answered, “The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Please let us go on a three-day trip into the wilderness so that we may sacrifice to Yahweh our God, or else He may strike us with plague or sword.”

3 Then they said, "The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Please let us go a three-day journey into the desert to offer sacrifices to the LORD our God so he does not strike us with pestilence or sword."

4 And the king of Egypt said unto them, Wherefore O Moses and Aaron should ye loose the people from their works? Get you to your burdens.

4 And the king of Egypt said unto them, Wherefore do ye, Moses and Aaron, let the people from their works? get you unto your burdens.

4 But the king of Egypt said to them, “Moses and Aaron, why do you (a)draw the people away from their (b)work? Get back to your (c)(F)labors!”

4 The king of Egypt said to them, “Moses and Aaron, why are you causing the people to neglect their work? Get to your work!”

4 The king of Egypt replied to them, "Moses and Aaron, why are you keeping the people from their labor? Go back to your work!"

5 And Pharaoh said, Lo! many - now, are the people of the land, - and are ye to make them rest from their burdens?

5 And Pharaoh said, Behold, the people of the land now are many, and ye make them rest from their burdens.

5 Again Pharaoh said, “Look, (G)the people of the land are now many, and you would have them cease from their labors!”

5 Pharaoh also said, “Look, the people of the land are so numerous, and you would stop them from working.”(C)

5 Then Pharaoh said, "Look, the people in the land are now numerous, and you are stopping them from working."

Further Oppression Of Israel

6 So then Pharaoh gave command on that day, unto the taskmasters over the people and unto their overseers - saying:

6 And Pharaoh commanded the same day the taskmasters of the people, and their officers, saying,

6 So the same day Pharaoh commanded (H)the taskmasters over the people and their (I)foremen, saying,

6 That day Pharaoh commanded the overseers(D) of the people as well as their foremen:

6 That day Pharaoh ordered the taskmasters of the people and their officials,

7 Ye shall no more give straw unto the people, for making the bricks as heretofore: Let them, go, themselves, so shall they gather for themselves straw:

7 Ye shall no more give the people straw to make brick, as heretofore: let them go and gather straw for themselves.

7 “You are no longer to give the people straw to make brick as previously; let them go and gather straw for themselves.

7 “Don’t continue to supply the people with straw for making bricks, as before. They must go and gather straw for themselves.

7 "You're no longer to give the people straw for making bricks, as in the past. They must gather straw for themselves.

8 Nevertheless, the fixed number of bricks, which they have been making heretofore, shall ye lay upon them, ye shall not diminish therefrom, - for idle, they are, on this account, it is that they are making an outcry, saying, We must go our way, we must sacrifice to our God.

8 And the tale of the bricks, which they did make heretofore, ye shall lay upon them; ye shall not diminish ought thereof: for they be idle; therefore they cry, saying, Let us go and sacrifice to our God.

8 But the quota of bricks which they were making previously, you shall impose on them; you are not to reduce any of it. Because they are (J)lazy, therefore they cry out, ‘(d)Let us go and sacrifice to our God.’

8 But require the same quota of bricks from them as they were making before; do not reduce it. For they are slackers—that is why they are crying out,(E) ‘Let us go and sacrifice to our God.’

8 But you're to impose the previous quota of bricks that they're making. You're not to reduce it! It is because they're lazy that they're crying out, "Let's go offer sacrifices to our God.'

9 The service must be made heavy on the men that they may labour on it, - and let them not pay regard to words of falsehood.

9 Let there more work be laid upon the men, that they may labour therein; and let them not regard vain words.

9 Let the labor be heavier on the men, and let them work at it so that they will pay no attention to false words.”

9 Impose heavier work on the men. Then they will be occupied with it and not pay attention to deceptive words.”

9 So increase the work load on the people, and let them do it so they don't pay attention to deceptive speeches."

10 Then went forth the taskmasters of the people and their overseers, and spake unto the people, - saying, - Thus, saith Pharaoh, I am not going to give you straw,

10 And the taskmasters of the people went out, and their officers, and they spake to the people, saying, Thus saith Pharaoh, I will not give you straw.

10 So (K)the taskmasters of the people and their foremen went out and spoke to the people, saying, “Thus says Pharaoh, ‘I am not going to give you any straw.

10 So the overseers and foremen of the people went out and said to them, “This is what Pharaoh says:(F) ‘I am not giving you straw.

10 Then the taskmasters of the people and their officials went out and told the people, "This is Pharaoh's response: "I'll no longer give you any straw.

11 Ye yourselves go fetch you straw, of any ye can find, - yet hath there not been diminished from your service a single thing.

11 Go ye, get you straw where ye can find it: yet not ought of your work shall be diminished.

11 You go and get straw for yourselves wherever you can find it, but none of your labor will be reduced.’”

11 Go get straw yourselves wherever you can find it, but there will be no reduction at all in your workload.’”

11 Go get straw for yourselves wherever you can find it, but your work quotas won't be reduced at all.'"

12 So the people dispersed themselves throughout all the land of Egypt, - to gather stubble for straw:

12 So the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Egypt to gather stubble instead of straw.

12 So the people scattered through all the land of Egypt to gather stubble for straw.

12 So the people scattered throughout the land of Egypt to gather stubble for straw.

12 So the people scattered throughout the entire land of Egypt to collect stubble for straw.

13 the taskmasters, meanwhile, being urgent saying, - Complete your works, The task of a day, in its day, as when the straw was provided.

13 And the taskmasters hasted them, saying, Fulfil your works, your daily tasks, as when there was straw.

13 The taskmasters pressed them, saying, “Complete your (e)work quota, (f)your daily amount, just as when (g)you had straw.”

13 The overseers insisted, “Finish your assigned work each day, just as you did when straw was provided.”

13 The taskmasters pressured them by saying, "Finish your work each day's quota just as when you were given straw."

14 Then were beaten the overseers of the sons of Israel, whom the taskmasters of Pharaoh had set over them saying: Wherefore have ye not completed your task for making bricks, as heretofore, so also, yesterday and, to-day?

14 And the officers of the children of Israel, which Pharaoh's taskmasters had set over them, were beaten, and demanded, Wherefore have ye not fulfilled your task in making brick both yesterday and to day, as heretofore?

14 Moreover, (L)the foremen of the sons of Israel, whom Pharaoh’s taskmasters had set over them, (M)were beaten (h)and were asked, “Why have you not completed your required amount either yesterday or today in making brick as previously?”

14 Then the Israelite foremen, whom Pharaoh’s slave drivers had set over the people, were beaten(G) and asked, “Why haven’t you finished making your prescribed number of bricks yesterday or today, as you did before?”

14 The Israeli supervisors whom Pharaoh's taskmasters had appointed over them were beaten and told, "Why didn't you, both yesterday and today, fulfill your quota for making bricks as before?"

15 Then came in the overseers of the sons of Israel, and made outcry unto Pharaoh, saying, Wherefore shouldst thou do thus to thy servants?

15 Then the officers of the children of Israel came and cried unto Pharaoh, saying, Wherefore dealest thou thus with thy servants?

15 Then the foremen of the sons of Israel came and cried out to Pharaoh, saying, “Why do you deal this way with your servants?

15 So the Israelite foremen went in and cried for help to Pharaoh: “Why are you treating your servants this way?

15 The Israeli supervisors came and cried out to Pharaoh, "Why are you doing this to us?

16 No straw, is given to thy servants, yet bricks, - they keep saying to us - make ye! And lo, thy servants, are beaten - thou dost, therefore, wrong thy people.

16 There is no straw given unto thy servants, and they say to us, Make brick: and, behold, thy servants are beaten; but the fault is in thine own people.

16 There is no straw given to your servants, yet they keep saying to us, ‘Make bricks!’ And behold, your servants are being beaten; but it is the fault of your own people.”

16 No straw has been given to your servants, yet they say to us, ‘Make bricks!’ Look, your servants are being beaten, but it is your own people who are at fault.”

16 No straw is being given to us, yet they're saying to us, "Make bricks!' Look, we are being beaten. It's wrong how you are treating your people!"

17 But he said: Idle, ye are - idle, on this account, are, ye, saying, We must take our journey, we must sacrifice to Yahweh.

17 But he said, Ye are idle, ye are idle: therefore ye say, Let us go and do sacrifice to the LORD.

17 But he said, “You are (N)lazy, very lazy; therefore you say, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to the Lord.’

17 But he said, “You are slackers. Slackers! That is why you are saying, ‘Let us go sacrifice to the Lord.’

17 Then Pharaoh said, "You are lazy, lazy! That's why you're saying, "Let's go offer sacrifices to the LORD.'

18 Now, therefore, go labour, but, straw, shall not be given you, - yet the tale of bricks, shall ye render.

18 Go therefore now, and work; for there shall no straw be given you, yet shall ye deliver the tale of bricks.

18 So go now and work; for you will be given no straw, yet you must deliver the quota of bricks.”

18 Now get to work. No straw will be given to you, but you must produce the same quantity of bricks.”

18 Now, go! Get to work! And straw won't be given to you, but you are to deliver the same number of bricks!"

19 Then did the overseers of the sons of Israel see themselves to be in an evil case, when it was said, - Ye shall not diminish from your bricks - the task of a day, in its day

19 And the officers of the children of Israel did see that they were in evil case, after it was said, Ye shall not minish ought from your bricks of your daily task.

19 The foremen of the sons of Israel saw that they were in trouble (i)because they were told, “You must not reduce (j)your daily amount of bricks.”

19 The Israelite foremen saw that they were in trouble when they were told, “You cannot reduce your daily quota of bricks.”

19 The Israeli supervisors realized they were in trouble when he said, "You won't reduce each day's quota of bricks!"

20 So they fell upon Moses and upon Aaron, stationing themselves to meet them, - as they came forth from Pharaoh;

20 And they met Moses and Aaron, who stood in the way, as they came forth from Pharaoh:

20 When they left Pharaoh’s presence, they met Moses and Aaron as they were (k)waiting for them.

20 When they left Pharaoh, they confronted Moses and Aaron, who stood waiting to meet them.

20 As they left Pharaoh's presence, they met Moses and Aaron standing there.

21 and they said unto them, Yahweh look upon you and judge, - in that ye have made us odious in the eyes of Pharaoh and in the eyes of his servants, putting a sword into their hand to slay us.

21 And they said unto them, The LORD look upon you, and judge; because ye have made our savour to be abhorred in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to slay us.

21 (O)They said to them, “(P)May the Lord look upon you and judge you, for you have (Q)made (l)us odious in Pharaoh’s sight and in the sight of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to kill us.”

21 “May the Lord take note of you and judge,” they said to them, “because you have made us reek in front of Pharaoh and his officials—putting a sword in their hand to kill us!”(H)

21 The supervisors told them, "May the LORD look on you and judge you! You have made us repulsive to Pharaoh and his servants. You have put a sword in their hands to kill us."

Moses Complains To God

22 And Moses returned unto Yahweh and said, - O My Lord wherefore hast thou caused harm to this people? Wherefore now didst thou send me?

22 And Moses returned unto the LORD, and said, Lord, wherefore hast thou so evil entreated this people? why is it that thou hast sent me?

22 Then Moses returned to the Lord and said, “(R)O Lord, why have You brought harm to this people? Why did You ever send me?

22 So Moses went back to the Lord and asked, “Lord, why have You caused trouble for this people? And why did You ever send me?(I)

22 So Moses returned to the LORD and asked him, "LORD, why have you caused trouble for this people? Why have you sent me here?

23 seeing that from what time I came in unto Pharaoh to speak in thy name, he hath done harm to this people, and thou hast not delivered, thy people,

23 For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in thy name, he hath done evil to this people; neither hast thou delivered thy people at all.

23 Ever since I came to Pharaoh to speak in Your name, he has done harm to this people, (S)and You have not delivered Your people at all.”

23 Ever since I went in to Pharaoh to speak in Your name he has caused trouble for this people, and You haven’t delivered Your people at all.” >

23 Ever since I came to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has caused trouble for this people, and you have done nothing to deliver your people."
