Jacob Fears Esau

1 And Jacob went on his way, and angels of God met him.

1 Now as Jacob went on his way, (A)the angels of God met him.

1 And Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him.

1 Jacob went on his way, and God’s angels met him.(A)

1 As Jacob went on his way, angels from God met him.

2 And when he saw them, Jacob said, "This [is] the camp of God!" And he called the name of that place Mahanaim.

2 Jacob said when he saw them, “This is God’s (a)camp.” So he named that place (b)(B)Mahanaim.

2 And when Jacob saw them, he said, This is God's host: and he called the name of that place Mahanaim.

2 When he saw them, Jacob said, “This is God’s camp.” So he called that place Mahanaim.(a)(B)

2 As he was watching them, Jacob said, "This must be God's camp," so he named that place Mahanaim.

Jacob Sends Gifts To Esau

3 Then Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother, to the land of Seir, the territory of Edom.

3 Then Jacob (C)sent messengers before him to his brother Esau in the land of (D)Seir, the (c)country of (E)Edom.

3 And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir, the country of Edom.

3 Jacob sent messengers ahead of him to his brother Esau in the land of Seir, the country of Edom.

3 Then Jacob sent messengers ahead of him into the land of Seir (that is, into the territory of Edom) to meet his brother Esau.

4 And he instructed them, saying, "Thus you must say to my lord, to Esau, 'Thus says your servant Jacob, I have dwelled as an alien with Laban, and I have remained [there] until now.

4 He also commanded them saying, “Thus you shall say to my lord Esau: ‘Thus says your servant Jacob, “I have sojourned with Laban, and (F)stayed until now;

4 And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak unto my lord Esau; Thy servant Jacob saith thus, I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed there until now:

4 He commanded them, “You are to say to my lord Esau, ‘This is what your servant Jacob says. I have been staying with Laban and have been delayed until now.

4 He instructed them, "This is what you are to say to my master Esau: "Your servant Jacob told me to tell you, "I've journeyed to stay with Laban and I've remained there until now.

5 And I have acquired cattle, male donkeys, flocks, and male and female slaves, and I have sent to tell my lord, to find favor in your eyes.'"

5 (G)I have oxen and donkeys and flocks and male and female servants; and I have sent to tell my lord, (H)that I may find favor in your sight.”’”

5 And I have oxen, and asses, flocks, and menservants, and womenservants: and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight.

5 I have oxen, donkeys, flocks, male and female slaves. I have sent this message to inform my lord, in order to seek your favor.’”(C)

5 I now have cattle, donkeys, flocks, and male and female servants. I'm sending this message to you, sir, so that you'll show favor to me."'"

6 And the messengers returned to Jacob [and] said, "We came to your brother, to Esau, and he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men [are] with him."

6 The messengers returned to Jacob, saying, “We came to your brother Esau, and furthermore (I)he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.”

6 And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and also he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him.

6 When the messengers returned to Jacob, they said, “We went to your brother Esau; he is coming to meet you—and he has 400 men with him.”(D)

6 Later, the messengers returned to Jacob and reported, "We went to your brother Esau. He's now coming to meet you and he has 400 men with him!"

7 Then Jacob was very frightened and distressed. So he divided the people, flocks, cattle, and camels that [were] with him into two companies.

7 Then Jacob was (J)greatly afraid and distressed; and he divided the people who were with him, and the flocks and the herds and the camels, into two companies;

7 Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed: and he divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camels, into two bands;

7 Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed; he divided the people with him into two camps, along with the flocks, cattle, and camels.

7 Feeling mounting terror and distress, Jacob divided the people who were with him into two groups, doing the same with the flocks, the cattle, and the camels.

8 And he thought, "If Esau comes to one company and destroys it, the remaining company will be [able] to escape."

8 for he said, “If Esau comes to the one company and (d)attacks it, then the company which is left will escape.”

8 And said, If Esau come to the one company, and smite it, then the other company which is left shall escape.

8 He thought, “If Esau comes to one camp and attacks it, the remaining one can escape.”(E)

8 Jacob was thinking, "If Esau comes to one group and attacks it, then the remaining group may escape."

9 Then Jacob said, "O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, O Yahweh, who said to me, 'Return to your land and to your family, and I will deal well with you.'

9 Jacob said, “O (K)God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, O Lord, who said to me, ‘(L)Return to your country and to your relatives, and I will (e)prosper you,’

9 And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the LORD which saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee:

9 Then Jacob said, “God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac,(F) the Lord who said to me, ‘Go back to your land and to your family, and I will cause you to prosper,’(G)

9 Then Jacob prayed, "O God of my father Abraham, O God of my father Isaac, O LORD, you who told me, "Return to your country and to your relatives and I'll cause things to go well for you.'

10 {I am not worthy} of all the loyal love and all the faithfulness that you have shown your servant, for with [only] my staff I crossed this Jordan, and now I have become two camps.

10 (f)I am unworthy (M)of all the lovingkindness and of all the (g)faithfulness which You have shown to Your servant; for with my staff only I crossed this Jordan, and now I have become two companies.

10 I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands.

10 I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness You have shown Your servant. Indeed, I crossed over this Jordan with my staff, and now I have become two camps.

10 I'm unworthy of all your gracious love, your faithfulness, and everything that you've done for your servant. When I first crossed over this river, I had only my staff. But now I've become two groups.

11 Please rescue me from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau, for I fear him, lest he come and attack mother and children [alike].

11 (N)Deliver me, I pray, (O)from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him, that he will come and (h)attack me and the (P)mothers with the children.

11 Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me, and the mother with the children.

11 Please rescue me from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am afraid of him; otherwise, he may come and attack me, the mothers, and their children.

11 Deliver me from my brother Esau's control, because I'm terrified of him, and I'm afraid that he's coming to attack me, the mothers, and their children.

12 Now you yourself said, 'I will surely deal well with you and make your offspring as the sand of the sea that cannot be counted for abundance.'"

12 For You said, ‘(Q)I will surely (i)prosper you and (R)make your (j)descendants as the sand of the sea, which is too great to be numbered.’”

12 And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.

12 You have said, ‘I will cause you to prosper, and I will make your offspring like the sand of the sea, which cannot be counted.’”(H)

12 Now, you promised me that "I'm certainly going to cause things to go well with you, and I'm going to make your offspring as numerous as the sand of the sea, which cannot be counted.'"

13 And he lodged there that night. Then he took {from what he had with him} a gift for Esau his brother:

13 So he spent the night there. Then he (k)selected from what (l)he had with him a (S)present for his brother Esau:

13 And he lodged there that same night; and took of that which came to his hand a present for Esau his brother;

13 He spent the night there and took part of what he had brought with him as a gift for his brother Esau:(I)

13 Jacob spent the night there. Out of everything that he had brought with him, he chose a gift for his brother Esau

14 two hundred female goats, twenty male goats, two hundred ewes, twenty rams,

14 two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,

14 Two hundred she goats, and twenty he goats, two hundred ewes, and twenty rams,

14 200 female goats, 20 male goats, 200 ewes, 20 rams,

14 200 female goats, 20 male goats, 200 ewes, 20 rams,

15 thirty milk camels with their young, forty cows, ten bulls, twenty female donkeys, and ten male donkeys.

15 thirty milking camels and their colts, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten male donkeys.

15 Thirty milch camels with their colts, forty kine, and ten bulls, twenty she asses, and ten foals.

15 30 milk camels with their young, 40 cows, 10 bulls, 20 female donkeys, and 10 male donkeys.

15 30 milking camels with their young, 40 cows with ten bulls, and 20 female donkeys with ten male donkeys.

16 And he put [them] under the hand of his servants, {herd by herd}, and said to his servants, "Cross on ahead before me, and put some distance {between herds}.

16 He delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by itself, and said to his servants, “Pass on before me, and put a space between droves.”

16 And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by themselves; and said unto his servants, Pass over before me, and put a space betwixt drove and drove.

16 He entrusted them to his slaves as separate herds and said to them, “Go on ahead of me, and leave some distance between the herds.”

16 He entrusted them into the care of his servants, one herd at a time. Then he told his servants, "Go in front of me, making sure there's plenty of space between herds."

17 And he instructed the foremost, saying, "When Esau my brother comes upon you and asks you, saying, 'Whose [are] you and where are you going? To whom do these [animals] belong ahead of you?'

17 He commanded the (m)one in front, saying, “When my brother Esau meets you and asks you, saying, ‘To whom do you belong, and where are you going, and to whom do these animals in front of you belong?’

17 And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau my brother meeteth thee, and asketh thee, saying, Whose art thou? and whither goest thou? and whose are these before thee?

17 And he told the first one: “When my brother Esau meets you and asks, ‘Who do you belong to? Where are you going? And whose animals are these ahead of you?’

17 To the first group he said, "When you meet my brother Esau, if he asks, "To whom do you belong? Where are you going? And to whom do these herds belong?'

18 Then you must say, 'To your servant, to Jacob. It [is] a gift sent to my lord, to Esau. Now behold, he [is] also [coming] after us.'"

18 then you shall say, ‘These belong to your servant Jacob; it is a present sent to my lord Esau. And behold, he also is behind us.’”

18 Then thou shalt say, They be thy servant Jacob's; it is a present sent unto my lord Esau: and, behold, also he is behind us.

18 then tell him, ‘They belong to your servant Jacob. They are a gift sent to my lord Esau. And look, he is behind us.’”

18 then you are to reply, "We're from your servant Jacob. The herds are a gift. He's sending them to my master, Esau. Look! There he is, coming along behind us.'"

19 And he also instructed the second [servant] and the third, and everyone [else] who [was] behind the herds, saying, "You must speak to Esau according to this word when you find him.

19 Then he commanded also the second and the third, and all those who followed the droves, saying, “After this manner you shall speak to Esau when you find him;

19 And so commanded he the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, On this manner shall ye speak unto Esau, when ye find him.

19 He also told the second one, the third, and everyone who was walking behind the animals, “Say the same thing to Esau when you find him.

19 He issued similar instructions to the second and third group, as well as to all the others who drove the herds that followed: "This is how you are to speak to Esau when you find him.

20 And moreover, you shall say, 'Look, your servant Jacob [is] behind us.'" For he thought, "{Let me appease him} with the gift going before me, and afterward I will see his face. Perhaps he will {show me favor}."

20 and you shall say, ‘Behold, your servant Jacob also is behind us.’” For he said, “I will appease him with the present that goes before me. Then afterward I will see his face; perhaps he will accept me.”

20 And say ye moreover, Behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept of me.

20 You are also to say, ‘Look, your servant Jacob is right behind us.’” For he thought, “I want to appease Esau with the gift that is going ahead of me. After that, I can face him, and perhaps he will forgive me.”

20 You are to tell him, "Look! Your servant Jacob is coming along behind us.'"

21 So the gift passed on before him, but he himself spent that night in the camp.

21 So the present passed on before him, while he himself spent that night in the camp.

21 So went the present over before him: and himself lodged that night in the company.

21 So the gift was sent on ahead of him while he remained in the camp that night.

21 Jacob was thinking, "I'll pacify him with the presents that are being sent ahead of me. Then, when I meet him, perhaps he'll accept me." So the presents went ahead of him, while he spent that night in the camp.

Jacob Wrestles With God

22 That night he arose and took his two wives, his two female servants, and his eleven children and crossed the ford of the Jabbok.

22 Now he arose that same night and took his two wives and his two maids and his eleven children, and crossed the ford of the (T)Jabbok.

22 And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two womenservants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford Jabbok.

22 During the night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two female slaves, and his 11 sons, and crossed the ford of Jabbok.(J)

22 Later that night, he woke up, quickly took his two wives, his two women servants, and his eleven children, and forded the river at Jabbok.

23 And he took them and sent them across the stream. Then he sent across all his possessions.

23 He took them and sent them across the stream. And he sent across whatever he had.

23 And he took them, and sent them over the brook, and sent over that he had.

23 He took them and sent them across the stream, along with all his possessions.

23 He took them across the river, along with all his possessions.

24 And Jacob remained alone, and a man wrestled with him until the breaking of the dawn.

24 Then Jacob was left alone, and a man (U)wrestled with him until daybreak.

24 And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.

24 Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him until daybreak.(K)

24 And so Jacob was left alone, and he struggled with a man until daybreak.

25 And when he saw that he could not prevail against him, he struck his hip socket, so that Jacob's hip socket was sprained as he wrestled with him.

25 When he saw that he had not prevailed against him, he touched the socket of his thigh; so the socket of Jacob’s thigh was dislocated while he wrestled with him.

25 And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.

25 When the man saw that He could not defeat him, He struck Jacob’s hip socket as they wrestled and dislocated his hip.

25 When the man realized that he hadn't yet won the struggle, he injured the socket of Jacob's thigh, dislocating it as he wrestled with him,

26 Then he said, "Let me go, for dawn is breaking." But he answered, "I will not let you go unless you bless me."

26 Then he said, “Let me go, for the dawn is breaking.” But he said, “(V)I will not let you go unless you bless me.”

26 And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.

26 Then He said to Jacob, “Let Me go, for it is daybreak.”But Jacob said, “I will not let You go unless You bless me.”

26 and said, "Let me go, because the dawn has come." "I won't let you go," Jacob replied, "unless you bless me."

27 Then he said to him, "What [is] your name?" And he said, "Jacob."

27 So he said to him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Jacob.”

27 And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.

27 “What is your name?” the man asked.“Jacob,” he replied.

27 Then the man asked him, "What's your name?" "Jacob," he responded

28 And he said, "Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have struggled with God and with men and have prevailed."

28 (W)He said, “Your name shall no longer be Jacob, but (n)Israel; for you have striven with God and with men and have prevailed.”

28 And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.

28 “Your name will no longer be Jacob,”(L) He said. “It will be Israel(b) because you have struggled with God(M) and with men and have prevailed.”

28 "Your name won't be Jacob anymore," the man replied, "but Israel, because you exerted yourself against both God and men, and you've emerged victorious."

29 Then Jacob asked and said, "Please tell me your name." And he said, "Why do you ask this--for my name?" And he blessed him there.

29 Then (X)Jacob asked him and said, “Please tell me your name.” But he said, “Why is it that you ask my name?” And he blessed him there.

29 And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.

29 Then Jacob asked Him, “Please tell me Your name.”But He answered, “Why do you ask My name?”(N) And He blessed him there.

29 "Please," Jacob inquired, "Tell me your name." But he asked, "Why are you asking about my name?" And he blessed Jacob there.

30 Then Jacob called the name of the place Peniel [which means] "I have seen God face to face and my life was spared."

30 So Jacob named the place (o)Peniel, for he said, “(Y)I have seen God face to face, yet my (p)life has been preserved.”

30 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.

30 Jacob then named the place Peniel,(c) “For I have seen God face to face,” he said, “and I have been delivered.”(O)

30 Jacob would later call that place Peniel, because "I saw God face to face, but my life was spared."

31 Then the sun rose upon him as he passed Penuel, and he was limping because of his hip.

31 Now the sun rose upon him just as he crossed over (Z)Penuel, and he was limping on his thigh.

31 And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh.

31 The sun shone on him as he passed by Penuel(d)(P)—limping because of his hip.

31 The sun was rising above Jacob as he crossed over from Peniel, limping due to his wounded thigh.

32 Therefore the {Israelites} do not eat the sinew of the sciatic nerve that [is] upon the socket of the hip unto this day, because he struck the socket of the thigh of Jacob at the sinew of the sciatic nerve.

32 Therefore, to this day the sons of Israel do not eat the sinew of the hip which is on the socket of the thigh, because he touched the socket of Jacob’s thigh in the sinew of the hip.

32 Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacob's thigh in the sinew that shrank.

32 That is why, to this day, the Israelites don’t eat the thigh muscle that is at the hip socket: because He struck Jacob’s hip socket at the thigh muscle.(e)

32 Therefore, to this day the Israelis do not eat the hip tendon that connects to the thigh socket, because he had injured the socket of the thigh where the tendon connected to Jacob's hip.
