1 And it shall be in that time, and Judah will go down from his brethren, and will turn to a man, an Adullamite, and his name Hirah.
1 And it came to pass at that time, that Judah went down from his brethren, and turned in to a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah.
1 Right about then, Judah left his brothers and went to live with an Adullamite man named Hirah.
2 And Judah will see there the daughter of a man, a Canaanite, and his name Shuah, and he will take her and will go in to her.
2 And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite, whose name was Shuah; and he took her, and went in unto her.
2 There Judah saw the daughter of a Canaanite named Shua; he took her as a wife and slept with her.
2 There Judah met the daughter of a Canaanite man named Shua. He married her, had sexual relations with her,
3 And she will conceive and bring forth a son, and he will call his name Er.
3 And she conceived, and bare a son; and he called his name Er.
3 and she conceived, bore a son, and named him Er.
4 And she will conceive yet again and bear a son. and will call his name Onan.
4 And she conceived again, and bare a son; and she called his name Onan.
4 She conceived again, gave birth to a son, and named him Onan.
4 Later, she conceived again, bore another son, and named him Onan.
5 And she will add yet and bear a son, and will call his name Shelah: and he was in Chezib, in her bearing him.
5 And she yet again conceived, and bare a son; and called his name Shelah: and he was at Chezib, when she bare him.
5 Then she bore yet another son and named him Shelah. Judah was living in Kezib when she bore him.
6 And Judah will take a wife for Er his first-born, and her name Tamar
6 Now Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, and her name was Tamar.
6 And Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, whose name was Tamar.
6 Judah got a wife for Er, his firstborn, and her name was Tamar.
6 Judah found a wife for his oldest son Er. Her name was Tamar.
7 And Er, Judah's first-born, will be evil in the eyes of Jehovah: and Jehovah will kill him.
7 And Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD slew him.
7 But the LORD considered Er, Judah's oldest son, to be wicked so he put him to death.
8 And Judah will say to Onan, go in to thy brother's wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother.
8 And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother's wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother.
8 So Judah instructed Onan, "You are to have sexual relations with your dead brother's wife, performing the duty of a brother-in-law with her, and have offspring for your brother."
9 And Onan will know that not to him will be the seed; and it was when he went in to his brother's wife, he destroyed upon the earth, not to give seed to his brother.
9 And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother.
9 But Onan knew that the offspring would not be his, so whenever he slept with his brother’s wife, he released his semen on the ground so that he would not produce offspring for his brother.
9 But Onan knew that the offspring wouldn't be his own heir, so whenever he had sexual relations with his brother's wife, he would spill his semen on the ground to avoid fathering offspring for his brother.
10 And it will be evil in the eyes of Jehovah, what he did, and he will kill him also
10 And the thing which he did displeased the LORD: wherefore he slew him also.
10 What he did was evil in the Lord’s sight, so He put him to death also.
10 The LORD considered what Onan was doing to be evil, so he put him to death, too.
11 And Judah will say to Tamar his daughter-in-law, Sit a widow in thy father's house, till Shelah my son shall be great; (for he said, Lest this also shall die as his brethren.) And Tamar will go and will sit in her father's house.
11 Then Judah said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, “(J)Remain a widow in your father’s house until my son Shelah grows up”; for he (h)thought, “I am afraid that he too may die like his brothers.” So Tamar went and lived in her father’s house.
11 Then said Judah to Tamar his daughter in law, Remain a widow at thy father's house, till Shelah my son be grown: for he said, Lest peradventure he die also, as his brethren did. And Tamar went and dwelt in her father's house.
11 Then Judah said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, “Remain a widow in your father’s house until my son Shelah grows up.”(F) For he thought, “He might die too, like his brothers.” So Tamar went to live in her father’s house.
11 After this, Judah told his daughter-in-law Tamar, "Go live as a widow in your father's house until my son Shelah grows up." But he was really thinking, ""otherwise, Shelah might die like his brothers." So Tamar left and lived in her father's house.
12 And the days will be multiplied, and the daughter of Shuah, Judah's wife, will die; and Judah will be comforted, and will go up to the shearers of his sheep, he and Hirah his friend the Adullamite, to Timnath.
12 Now (i)after a considerable time Shua’s daughter, the wife of Judah, died; and when (j)the time of mourning was ended, Judah went up to his sheepshearers at (K)Timnah, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.
12 And in process of time the daughter of Shuah Judah's wife died; and Judah was comforted, and went up unto his sheepshearers to Timnath, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.
12 Some years later, Shua's daughter (that is, Judah's wife) died. As Judah was grieving, he visited the shearers of his flock in Timnah, accompanied by his Adullamite friend Hirah.
13 And it will be announced to Tamar, saying, Behold, thy father-in-law going up to Timnath to shear his sheep.
13 And it was told Tamar, saying, Behold thy father in law goeth up to Timnath to shear his sheep.
13 Tamar was told, “Your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep.”
13 "Look!" somebody reported to Tamar, "Your father-in-law is going to Timnah to shear his sheep."
14 And she will remove the garments of her widowhood from her, and she will be covered with a veil, and will veil herself and will sit in the entrance of the eyes, which is upon the way to Timnath; for she saw that Shelah was great, and she was not given to him for a wife.
14 So she (l)removed her widow’s garments and (M)covered herself with a (m)veil, and wrapped herself, and sat in the gateway of (n)Enaim, which is on the road to Timnah; for she saw that Shelah had grown up, and (N)she had not been given to him as a wife.
14 And she put her widow's garments off from her, and covered her with a vail, and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place, which is by the way to Timnath; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given unto him to wife.
14 So she took off her widow’s clothes, veiled her face,(H) covered herself, and sat at the entrance to Enaim,(d) which is on the way to Timnah. For she saw that, though Shelah had grown up, she had not been given to him as a wife.
14 So she took off her mourning apparel, covered herself with a shawl, and concealed her outward appearance. Then she went out and sat at the entrance of Enaim, which is on the way to Timnah, because she knew that even though Shelah had grown up, she wasn't being given to him as his wife.
15 And Judah will see her, and will think her a harlot, because she covered her face.
15 When Judah saw her, he thought she was a harlot, for she had covered her face.
15 When Judah saw her, he thought her to be an harlot; because she had covered her face.
15 When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face.
15 When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute, since she had concealed her face.
16 And he will turn to her by the way, and will say, Now I will come in to thee; for he knew not that she was his daughter-in-law: and she will say, What wilt thou give to me that thou wilt come in to me?
16 So he turned aside to her by the road, and said, “(o)Here now, let me come in to you”; for he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law. And she said, “What will you give me, that you may come in to me?”
16 And he turned unto her by the way, and said, Go to, I pray thee, let me come in unto thee; (for he knew not that she was his daughter in law.) And she said, What wilt thou give me, that thou mayest come in unto me?
16 So on the way, he turned aside, approached her, and said, "Come on! Let's have some sex!" But he didn't realize that he was talking to his own daughter-in-law. "What will you give me," she asked, "in order to have sex with me?"
17 And he will say, I will send a kid of the goats from the flock: and she will say, If thou wilt give a pledge till thy sending.
17 And he said, I will send thee a kid from the flock. And she said, Wilt thou give me a pledge, till thou send it?
17 “I will send you a young goat from my flock,” he replied. But she said, “Only if you leave something with me until you send it.”
17 "I'll send you a young goat from the flock," he responded. But she pressed him, asking, "What security will you put up until you've sent it?"
18 And he will say, What the pledge which I shall give to thee? And she will say, Thy seal, and thy cord, and thy rod which is in thy hand: and he will give to her, and will go in to her, and she will conceive by him.
18 And he said, What pledge shall I give thee? And she said, Thy signet, and thy bracelets, and thy staff that is in thine hand. And he gave it her, and came in unto her, and she conceived by him.
18 “What should I give you?” he asked. She answered, “Your signet ring, your cord, and the staff in your hand.” So he gave them to her and slept with her, and she got pregnant by him.
18 Then he asked, "What pledge do you want me to give you?"
19 And she will arise and go, and will put away her veil from her, and will put on the garments of her widowhood
19 And she arose, and went away, and laid by her vail from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.
19 She got up and left, then removed her veil and put her widow’s clothes back on.
19 "Your signet ring, cord, and the staff in your hand," she suggested. So he gave them to her, had sex with her, and she became pregnant by him. Then she got up and left. Later, she took off her shawl and put on her mourning clothes.
20 And Judah will send the kid of the goats by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to take the pledge from the hand of the woman; and he found her not
20 And Judah sent the kid by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his pledge from the woman's hand: but he found her not.
20 When Judah sent the young goat by his friend the Adullamite in order to get back the items he had left with the woman, he could not find her.
20 Later on, Judah sent his Adullamite friend to take her a young goat, intending to retrieve what he had put up as security from the woman, but he could not find her.
21 And he will ask the men of the place, saying, Where the harlot, she in the eyes upon the way? and they will say, No harlot was here.
21 He asked the men of her place, saying, “Where is the temple prostitute who was by the road at Enaim?” But they said, “There has been no temple prostitute here.”
21 Then he asked the men of that place, saying, Where is the harlot, that was openly by the way side? And they said, There was no harlot in this place.
21 He asked the men of the place, “Where is the cult prostitute who was beside the road at Enaim?”“There has been no cult prostitute here,” they answered.
21 He asked the men who lived in that area, "Where's that temple prostitute who was sitting alongside the road at Enaim?" But they replied, "There's been no temple prostitute here."
22 And he will turn back to Judah, and will say, I found her not; and also the men of the place said, No harlot was here.
22 So he returned to Judah, and said, “I did not find her; and furthermore, the men of the place said, ‘There has been no temple prostitute here.’”
22 And he returned to Judah, and said, I cannot find her; and also the men of the place said, that there was no harlot in this place.
22 So the Adullamite returned to Judah, saying, “I couldn’t find her, and furthermore, the men of the place said, ‘There has been no cult prostitute here.’”
22 So he returned to Judah and said, "I haven't found her. Also, the men who are from there said, "There's been no prostitute here.'"
23 And Judah will say, She shall take to her, lest we shall be for a contempt: Behold, I sent this kid, and thou didst not find her.
23 And Judah said, Let her take it to her, lest we be shamed: behold, I sent this kid, and thou hast not found her.
23 Judah replied, “Let her keep the items for herself; otherwise we will become a laughingstock. After all, I did send this young goat, but you couldn’t find her.”
23 Then Judah said, "Let her have those things. Otherwise, we'll become contemptible. I sent this young goat, but you didn't find her."
24 And it will be after three months, and it will be announced to Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter-in-law committed fornication; and also, behold, she conceived by fornication. And Judah will say, Bring her forth, and she shall be burnt
24 Now it was about three months later that Judah was informed, “(v)Your daughter-in-law Tamar has played the harlot, and behold, she is also with child by harlotry.” Then Judah said, “Bring her out and (P)let her be burned!”
24 And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter in law hath played the harlot; and also, behold, she is with child by whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt.
24 Three months later, it was reported to Judah, "Your daughter-in-law Tamar has turned to prostitution! And look! She's pregnant because of it!" "Bring her out," Judah responded. "Let's burn her to death!"
25 She being brought forth, and she sent to her father-in-law, saying, By the man whose are these, by him I conceived. And she will say, Recognise, now, to whom the seal, the cords, and the rod, these.
25 It was while she was being brought out that she sent to her father-in-law, saying, “I am with child by the man to whom these things belong.” And she said, “(Q)Please examine and see, whose signet ring and cords and staff are these?”
25 When she was brought forth, she sent to her father in law, saying, By the man, whose these are, am I with child: and she said, Discern, I pray thee, whose are these, the signet, and bracelets, and staff.
25 As she was being brought out, she sent her father-in-law this message: “I am pregnant by the man to whom these items belong.” And she added, “Examine them. Whose signet ring, cord, and staff are these?”
25 While they were bringing her out, she sent this message to her father-in-law: "I am pregnant by the man to whom these things belong. Furthermore," she added, "tell me to whom this signet ring, cord, and staff belongs."
26 And Judah will recognise, and will say, She was justified more than I, because that I gave her not to Shelah my son: and he will not add to know her yet again.
26 And Judah acknowledged them, and said, She hath been more righteous than I; because that I gave her not to Shelah my son. And he knew her again no more.
26 When Judah recognized them, he admitted, "She is more upright than I, because I never did give her my son Shelah." And he never had sex with her again.
27 And it will be in the time of her bringing forth, and behold, twins in her womb.
27 And it came to pass in the time of her travail, that, behold, twins were in her womb.
27 When the time came for her to give birth, there were twins in her womb.
27 Later, when it was time for Tamar to give birth, she was carrying twins in her womb!
28 And it will be in her bringing forth, and he will give the hand; and the midwife will take and bind upon his hand, scarlet, saying, This came forth first
28 Moreover, it took place while she was giving birth, one put out a hand, and the midwife took and tied a scarlet thread on his hand, saying, “This one came out first.”
28 And it came to pass, when she travailed, that the one put out his hand: and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first.
28 As she was giving birth, one of them put out his hand, and the midwife took it and tied a scarlet thread around it, announcing, “This one came out first.”
28 While she was giving birth, one of them put out his hand, so the midwife grabbed it and tied something scarlet around his hand, observing, "This one came out first."
29 And it will be after turning back his hand, and behold his brother will come forth; and she will say, How didst thou break forth? the breach upon thee: and his name shall be called
29 And it came to pass, as he drew back his hand, that, behold, his brother came out: and she said, How hast thou broken forth? this breach be upon thee: therefore his name was called Pharez.
29 As it was, he withdrew his hand, and then his brother was born. Amazed, the midwife cried out loud, "What's this? A breach birth?" So that boy was named Perez.
30 And afterward his brother will come forth, whom upon his hand the scarlet, and his name shall be called Zarah.
30 And afterward came out his brother, that had the scarlet thread upon his hand: and his name was called Zarah.
30 Afterwards, his brother came out, and around his hand was the scarlet. So they named him Zerah.
