Eliphaz's Second Response To Job
2 Will a wise man make answer with knowledge of no value, or will he give birth to the east wind?
2 Should a wise man utter vain knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind?
2 "Should a wise person respond with knowledge based on wind? Should he fill his stomach with a wind storm from the east?
3 Will he make arguments with words in which is no profit, and with sayings which have no value?
3 Should he reason with unprofitable talk? or with speeches wherewith he can do no good?
3 “Should he argue with useless talk,Or with words which are not profitable?
3 Should he engage in unprofitable argument, or give a speech that benefits no one?
4 Truly, you make the fear of God without effect, so that the time of quiet worship before God is made less by your outcry.
4 Yea, thou castest off fear, and restrainest prayer before God.
4 But you even undermine the fear of Godand hinder meditation before Him.
4 Yet you dispense with fear of God and hinder meditations before God.
6 It is by your mouth, even yours, that you are judged to be in the wrong, and not by me; and your lips give witness against you.
6 Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I: yea, thine own lips testify against thee.
6 Your own mouth is condemning you, not I; your own lips will testify against you."
You Are Not The Only Wise Person, Job
9 What knowledge have you which we have not? is there anything in your mind which is not in ours?
9 What knowest thou, that we know not? what understandest thou, which is not in us?
9 What do you know that we don’t?What do you understand that is not clear to us?
9 What do you know that we don't know, or that you understand and that isn't clear to us?
10 With us are men who are grey-haired and full of years, much older than your father.
10 With us are both the grayheaded and very aged men, much elder than thy father.
10 Both the gray-haired and the elderly are with us,men older than your father.
10 "We have both the gray-haired and the aged with us, and they are far older than your father.
11 Are the comforts of God not enough for you, and the gentle word which was said to you?
11 Are the consolations of God small with thee? is there any secret thing with thee?
11 Are God’s consolations not enough for you, even the words that deal gently with you?
11 Are God's encouragements inconsequential to you, even a word that has been spoken gently to you?
13 So that you are turning your spirit against God, and letting such words go out of your mouth?
13 That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest such words go out of thy mouth?
13 That you should turn your spirit against GodAnd allow such words to go out of your mouth?
13 that you turn your anger against God and speak words like this?
14 What is man, that he may be clean? and how may the son of woman be upright?
14 What is man, that he should be clean? and he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?
14 “What is man, that (L)he should be pure,Or (M)he who is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?
14 "What is mankind, that he can be blameless? Or does being born of a woman mean he'll be in the right?
I Want To Tell You What I Know
17 Take note and give ear to my words; and I will say what I have seen:
17 I will shew thee, hear me; and that which I have seen I will declare;
17 “I will tell you, listen to me;And what I have seen I will also declare;
17 Listen to me and I will inform you.I will describe what I have seen,
17 "I'll tell you what, listen to me! Let me relate what I've seen,
19 For only to them was the land given, and no strange people were among them:)
19 Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.
19 To whom alone the land was given,And no alien passed among them.
19 the land was given to them alonewhen no foreigner passed among them.
19 To them alone was the land given, when no invader passed through their midst.
The Tortured Life Of The Wicked Person
20 The evil man is in pain all his days, and the number of the years stored up for the cruel is small.
20 The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden to the oppressor.
20 “The wicked man writhes (S)in pain all his days,And (e)numbered are the years (T)stored up for the ruthless.
20 "The wicked person writhes in pain throughout his life, a number of years has been reserved for the ruthless.
21 A sound of fear is in his ears; in time of peace destruction will come on him:
21 A dreadful sound is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.
21 Dreadful sounds fill his ears;when he is at peace, a robber attacks him.
21 Terrifying sounds ring in his ears; when times are prosperous, the Destroyer will attack him.
23 He is wandering about in search of bread, saying, Where is it? and he is certain that the day of trouble is ready for him:
23 He wandereth abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.
23 “He wanders about for food, saying, ‘Where is it?’He knows that a day of (Y)darkness is (g)at hand.
23 He wanders about for food, saying, “Where is it?”He knows the day of darkness is at hand.
23 He wanders around for food where is it? He knows that a time of darkness is near.
24 He is greatly in fear of the dark day, trouble and pain overcome him:
24 Trouble and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.
24 “Distress and anguish terrify him,They overpower him like a king ready for the attack,
24 Distress and pressure terrify him; they overwhelm him, like a king poised for attack.
25 Because his hand is stretched out against God, and his heart is lifted up against the Ruler of all,
25 For he stretcheth out his hand against God, and strengtheneth himself against the Almighty.
25 Because he has stretched out his hand against GodAnd conducts himself (Z)arrogantly against (h)the Almighty.
25 "For he has raised his fist against God, defying the Almighty.
26 Running against him like a man of war, covered by his thick breastplate; even like a king ready for the fight,
26 He runneth upon him, even on his neck, upon the thick bosses of his bucklers:
26 He rushes headlong at Himwith his thick, studded shields.
26 He defiantly ran against him carrying his thick, reinforced shield.
28 And he has made his resting-place in the towns which have been pulled down, in houses where no man had a right to be, whose fate was to become masses of broken walls.
28 And he dwelleth in desolate cities, and in houses which no man inhabiteth, which are ready to become heaps.
28 “He has (AB)lived in desolate cities,In houses no one would inhabit,Which are destined to become (k)ruins.
28 He will live in devastated towns, in abandoned houses that are about to become heaps of rubble.
29 He does not get wealth for himself, and is unable to keep what he has got; the heads of his grain are not bent down to the earth.
29 He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall he prolong the perfection thereof upon the earth.
29 “He (AC)will not become rich, nor will his wealth endure; And his grain will not bend down to the ground.
29 He will no longer be rich; his wealth will not endure. His possessions(f) will not increase in the land.
29 "He won't become rich and his wealth won't last; he won't expand his holdings to cover the land.
30 He does not come out of the dark; his branches are burned by the flame, and the wind takes away his bud.
30 He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.
30 “He will (AD)not (l)escape from darkness; The (AE)flame will wither his shoots,And by (AF)the breath of His mouth he will go away.
30 He will not escape from the darkness;flames will wither his shoots, and by the breath of God’s mouth, he will depart.(Q)
30 He won't escape darkness; a flame will wither his shoots; and he'll depart by the breath of God's mouth.
31 Let him not put his hope in what is false, falling into error: for he will get deceit as his reward.
31 Let not him that is deceived trust in vanity: for vanity shall be his recompence.
31 Let him not put trust in worthless things, being led astray, for what he gets in exchange will prove worthless.
31 Let him not trust in a worthless speech. He leads only himself astray, for emptiness will be his reward.
32 His branch is cut off before its time, and his leaf is no longer green.
32 It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be green.
32 It will be accomplished before his time, and his branch will not flourish.
32 This will be accomplished before his time; his branches won't grow luxuriant.
33 He is like a vine whose grapes do not come to full growth, or an olive-tree dropping its flowers.
33 He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive.
33 “He will drop off his unripe grape like the vine,And will (AJ)cast off his flower like the olive tree.
33 He will be like a vine that drops its unripe grapes(R)and like an olive tree that sheds its blossoms.
33 "He is like a vine that drops its unripe grapes; like an olive tree that loses its blossoms.
34 For the band of the evil-doers gives no fruit, and the tents of those who give wrong decisions for reward are burned with fire.
34 For the congregation of hypocrites shall be desolate, and fire shall consume the tabernacles of bribery.
34 For the company of the godless(S) will have no children, and fire will consume the tents of those who offer bribes.
34 For the company of the godless is desolation, and fire consumes the tents of those who bribe.
35 Evil has made them with child, and they give birth to trouble; and the fruit of their body is shame for themselves.
35 They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their belly prepareth deceit.
35 For they conceive mischief and give birth to iniquity; their womb is pregnant with deception."
