Sin, Forgiveness, Faith, And Service

1 Then Jesus said to His disciples, "It is inevitable that occasions which cause people to be led astray [from God] will come, but it is too bad for that person who is responsible for it happening.

1 He said to His disciples, (A)It is inevitable that (a)stumbling blocks come, but woe to him through whom they come!

1 Then said he unto the disciples, It is impossible but that offences will come: but woe unto him, through whom they come!

1 He(A) said to His disciples, “Offenses(a) will certainly come,(b) but woe(B) to the one they come(C) through!

1 Jesus told his disciples, "It is inevitable that temptations to sin will come, but how terrible it will be for the person through whom they come!

2 It would be good [i.e., better] for him to have had a huge millstone tied around his neck and be thrown into the ocean [Note: This "millstone" was a huge, circular stone rolled over grain to crush it and was moved by an animal walking in a circle], rather than having him cause one of these little ones [i.e., humble followers of the Lord] to be led astray [from God].

2 (B)It (b)would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea, than that he would cause one of these little ones to stumble.

2 It were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he cast into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones.

2 It would be better for him if a millstone(c) were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea than for him to cause one of these little ones to stumble.(D)

2 It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea than for him to cause one of these little ones to sin.

3 Pay attention to yourselves! "If your brother sins, rebuke him [i.e., show him where he is wrong in hope of effecting a change]; and if he repents [i.e., changes his heart and life], forgive him.

3 (c)Be on your guard! (C)If your brother sins, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him.

3 Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him.

3 Be(E) on your guard. If your brother sins,(d) rebuke(F) him, and if he repents, forgive(G) him.

3 "Watch yourselves! If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him.

4 And if he sins against you seven times a day and [then] comes to you seven times and says, 'I repent,' you should forgive him."

4 And if he sins against you (D)seven times a day, and returns to you seven times, saying, ‘I repent,’ (d)forgive him.”

4 And if he trespass against thee seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turn again to thee, saying, I repent; thou shalt forgive him.

4 And if he sins against you seven times in a day, and comes back to you seven times, saying, ‘I repent,’ you must forgive him.”

4 Even if he sins against you seven times in a day and comes back to you seven times and says, "I repent,' you must forgive him."

Faith And Duty

5 Then the apostles said to the Lord, "Give us more faith."

5 (E)The apostles said to (F)the Lord, “Increase our faith!”

5 And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith.

5 The(H) apostles(I) said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.”(J)

5 Then the apostles told the Lord, "Give us more faith!"

6 And the Lord said, "If you had faith as [small as] a mustard tree seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and replanted in the ocean,' and it would obey you.

6 And (G)the Lord said, “If you (e)had faith like (H)a mustard seed, you would say to this (I)mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and be planted in the sea’; and it would (f)obey you.

6 And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you.

6 “If you have faith the size of(e) a mustard seed,”(K) the Lord said, “you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it will obey you.

6 The Lord replied, "If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, "Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it would obey you!

Unworthy Servants

7 "But which of you, whose slave is plowing or tending sheep, will say to him when he comes in from the field, 'Come and sit right down to eat'?

7 “Which of you, having a slave plowing or tending sheep, will say to him when he has come in from the field, ‘Come immediately and (g)sit down to eat’?

7 But which of you, having a servant plowing or feeding cattle, will say unto him by and by, when he is come from the field, Go and sit down to meat?

7 “Which one of you having a slave tending sheep or plowing will say to him when he comes in from the field, ‘Come at once and sit down to eat’?

7 "Suppose a man among you has a servant plowing or watching sheep. Would he say to him when he comes in from the field, "Come at once and have something to eat'?

8 Would you not say to him instead, 'Prepare the food for my meal [first] and get ready to serve me until I have had enough to eat and drink and [then] afterward you can eat and drink [yourself]'?

8 But will he not say to him, ‘(J)Prepare something for me to eat, and properly (h)clothe yourself and serve me while I eat and drink; and (i)afterward you (j)may eat and drink’?

8 And will not rather say unto him, Make ready wherewith I may sup, and gird thyself, and serve me, till I have eaten and drunken; and afterward thou shalt eat and drink?

8 Instead, will he not tell him, ‘Prepare something for me to eat, get ready,(f) and serve me while I eat and drink; later you can eat and drink’?(L)

8 Of course not. Instead, he would say to him, "Get dinner ready for me, and put on your apron and wait on me until I eat and drink. Then you can eat and drink.'

9 Would he thank his slave for doing the things that he was ordered to do?

9 He does not thank the slave because he did the things which were commanded, does he?

9 Doth he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I trow not.

9 Does he thank that slave because he did what was commanded?(g)

9 He doesn't praise the servant for doing what was commanded, does he?

10 So, you too, after you have done everything you were told to, should say, 'We are unworthy slaves. We have done [only] what we were supposed to do.'"

10 So you too, when you do all the things which are commanded you, say, ‘We are unworthy slaves; we have done only that which we ought to have done.’”

10 So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.

10 In the same way, when you have done all that you were commanded, you should say, ‘We are good-for-nothing(M) slaves; we’ve only done our duty.’”

10 That's the way it is with you. When you have done everything you were ordered to do, say, "We are worthless servants. We have done only what we ought to have done.'"

Ten Lepers Cleansed

11 And it happened as Jesus was on His way to Jerusalem that He passed along the border between Samaria and Galilee. [Note: These were the next two provinces north of Judea].

11 While He was (K)on the way to Jerusalem, (L)He was passing (k)between Samaria and Galilee.

11 And it came to pass, as he went to Jerusalem, that he passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee.

11 While traveling to Jerusalem,(N) He passed between(h) Samaria and Galilee.(O)

11 One day, Jesus was traveling along the border between Samaria and Galilee on the way to Jerusalem.

12 And as He entered a certain village, He was met by ten men with infectious skin diseases, who were standing some distance away [Note: Restrictions in the Jewish law prevented contact with persons having infectious diseases. See Lev. 13:45ff],

12 As He entered a village, ten leprous men who (M)stood at a distance met Him;

12 And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off:

12 As He entered a village, 10 men with serious skin diseases(P) met Him. They stood at a distance

12 As he was going into a village, ten lepers met him. They stood at a distance

13 and shouting, "Jesus, Master, have pity on us."

13 and they raised their voices, saying, “Jesus, (N)Master, have mercy on us!”

13 And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.

13 and raised their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master,(Q) have mercy on us!”

13 and shouted, "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!"

14 And when Jesus saw them, He said to them, "Go and show yourselves to the priests." [See Lev. 13:49; 14:2ff]. And it happened, as they went [along], that they were healed.

14 When He saw them, He said to them, (O)Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And as they were going, they were cleansed.

14 And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed.

14 When He saw them, He told them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.”(R) And while they were going, they were healed.(i)

14 When Jesus saw them, he told them, "Go and show yourselves to the priests." While they were going, they were made clean.

15 Then one of them, seeing he had been healed, returned and praised God in a loud voice.

15 Now one of them, when he saw that he had been healed, turned back, (P)glorifying God with a loud voice,

15 And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God,

15 But one of them, seeing that he was healed, returned and, with a loud voice, gave glory to God.(S)

15 But one of them, when he saw that he had been healed, came back and praised God with a loud voice.

16 And he fell on his face at Jesus' feet and thanked Him. And he was a Samaritan. [Note: Samaritans were despised by the Jews and regarded as a 'half-breeds'].

16 and he fell on his face at His feet, giving thanks to Him. And he was a (Q)Samaritan.

16 And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan.

16 He fell facedown(T) at His feet, thanking Him. And he was a Samaritan.(U)

16 He fell on his face at Jesus' feet and thanked him. Now that man was a Samaritan.

17 Jesus asked [those standing nearby], "Were there not ten men [who were] healed? Where are the [other] nine?

17 Then Jesus answered and said, “Were there not ten cleansed? But the nine—where are they?

17 And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine?

17 Then Jesus said, “Were not 10 cleansed? Where are the nine?

17 Jesus asked, "Ten men were made clean, weren't they? Where are the other nine?

18 Did not anyone [else] come back to give praise to God, except this foreigner?"

18 (l)Was no one found who returned to (R)give glory to God, except this foreigner?”

18 There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger.

18 Didn’t any return(j) to give glory to God except this foreigner?”

18 Except for this foreigner, were any of them found to return and give praise to God?"

19 Then Jesus said to the one [who had returned], "Get up and go on your way. Your faith has made you well."

19 And He said to him, “Stand up and go; (S)your faith (m)has made you well.”

19 And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.

19 And He told him, “Get up and go on your way. Your faith has made you well.”(k)(V)

19 Then he told the man, "Get up, and go home! Your faith has made you well."

The Coming Of The Kingdom Of God

20 And when He was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus answered them, "The kingdom of God will not come the way you are looking for it.

20 Now having been questioned by the Pharisees (T)as to when the kingdom of God was coming, He answered them and said, “The kingdom of God is not coming with (n)(U)signs to be observed;

20 And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation:

20 Being(W) asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God will come,(X) He answered them, “The kingdom of God is not coming with something observable;

20 Once Jesus was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come. He answered them, "The kingdom of God is not coming with a visible display.

21 People will not be saying, 'Look, here [it is]!' or 'There [it is]!' For in fact, the kingdom of God is [now] among you [i.e., as represented by the presence and ministry of Jesus]."

21 nor will (V)they say, ‘Look, here it is!’ or, ‘There it is!’ For behold, the kingdom of God is (o)in your midst.”

21 Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.

21 no one will say,(l) ‘Look here!’ or ‘There!’ For you see, the kingdom of God is among you.”

21 People won't be saying, "Look! Here it is!' or "There it is!' because now the kingdom of God is among you."

The Coming Of The Son Of Man

22 Then He said to the disciples, "The time is coming when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of man [i.e., the time when the Messiah would deliver His people from tribulation], but you will not see it [i.e., such deliverance would not occur during their lifetimes].

22 And He said to the disciples, (W)The days will come when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it.

22 And he said unto the disciples, The days will come, when ye shall desire to see one of the days of the Son of man, and ye shall not see it.

22 Then He told the disciples: “The days are coming(Y) when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, but you won’t see it.(Z)

22 Then Jesus told the disciples, "The time will come during which you will long to see one of these days when the Son of Man is with you, but you will not see it.

23 And people will be saying to you, 'Look, there [He is]! Look, here [He is]! Do not leave or follow after them.

23 (X)They will say to you, ‘Look there! Look here!’ Do not go away, and do not run after them.

23 And they shall say to you, See here; or, see there: go not after them, nor follow them.

23 They will say to you,(AA) ‘Look there!’ or ‘Look here!’ Don’t follow or run after them.(AB)

23 People will say to you, "Look! There he is!' or "Look! Here he is!' But don't go and chase after him.

When Jesus Comes Again

24 For the Son of man [will come] in His day just like lightning which flashes from one part of the sky and lights up the other part.

24 (Y)For just like the lightning, when it flashes out of one part (p)of the sky, shines to the other part (q)of the sky, so will the Son of Man be in His day.

24 For as the lightning, that lighteneth out of the one part under heaven, shineth unto the other part under heaven; so shall also the Son of man be in his day.

24 For as the lightning flashes from horizon to horizon and lights up the sky, so the Son of Man will be in His day.(AC)

24 Because just as lightning flashes and shines from one end of the sky to the other, so will the Son of Man be in his time.

25 But first He must experience much suffering and be rejected by the people of this generation.

25 (Z)But first He must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.

25 But first must he suffer many things, and be rejected of this generation.

25 But first He must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.(AD)

25 But first he must suffer a great deal and be rejected by those living today.

26 "And just as it happened in the days of Noah, so it will be in the days of the Son of man.

26 (AA)And just as it happened (AB)in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man:

26 And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man.

26 “Just as it was in the days of Noah,(AE) so it will be in the days of the Son of Man:

26 "Just as it was in Noah's time, so it will be in the days of the Son of Man.

27 People were eating and drinking and [men were] marrying and [women] were being given away in marriage [right up] until the day that Noah entered the ship and the Flood came and drowned them all.

27 they were eating, they were drinking, they were marrying, they were being given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all.

27 They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all.

27 People went on eating, drinking, marrying and giving in marriage(AF) until the day Noah boarded the ark,(AG) and the flood came and destroyed them all.

27 People were eating, drinking, marrying, and being given in marriage right up to the day when Noah went into the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed all of them.

28 "It happened in a similar way in the days of Lot [i.e., Abraham's nephew]. People were eating and drinking and buying and selling and planting and building.

28 (r)It was the same as happened in (AC)the days of Lot: they were eating, they were drinking, they were buying, they were selling, they were planting, they were building;

28 Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded;

28 It will be the same as it was in the days of Lot:(AH) People went on eating, drinking, buying, selling, planting, building.

28 So it was in the days of Lot. People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building.

29 But on the day that Lot left Sodom, fire and sulphur rained down from the sky and consumed them all.

29 but on the day that Lot went out from Sodom it rained fire and (s)brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all.

29 But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all.

29 But on the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained from heaven and destroyed(AI) them all.

29 But on the day when Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed all of them.

30 "It will be the same way on the day the Son of man is revealed [i.e., at His second coming].

30 It will be (t)just the same on the day that the Son of Man (AD)is revealed.

30 Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed.

30 It(AJ) will be like that on the day the Son of Man is revealed.(AK)

30 The day when the Son of Man is revealed will be like that.

31 On that day, the person who is on a housetop [Note: This was a flat area where people retired for rest, prayer, etc., with its stairway on the outside], whose belongings are [still] in his house, is not to go down and [attempt to] take any of them away. And the person who is in a field [i.e., doing farm work], also is not to return [to his house].

31 On that day, the one who is (AE)on the housetop and whose goods are in the house must not go down to take them out; and likewise the one who is in the field must not turn back.

31 In that day, he which shall be upon the housetop, and his stuff in the house, let him not come down to take it away: and he that is in the field, let him likewise not return back.

31 On that day, a man on the housetop, whose belongings are in the house, must not come down to get them. Likewise the man who is in the field must not turn back.

31 "The person who is on the housetop that day must not come down to get his belongings out of his house. The person in the field, too, must not turn back to what's left behind.

32 Remember [what happened to] Lot's wife!

32 (AF)Remember Lot’s wife.

32 Remember Lot's wife.

32 Remember Lot’s wife!(AL)

32 Remember Lot's wife!

33 Whatever person tries to gain [everything to satisfy him in] life [here on earth] will lose it [i.e., never ending life]. But whatever person [is willing to] lose [the comforts and security of] his life [here on earth] will preserve it [for eternity].

33 (AG)Whoever seeks to keep his (u)life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it.

33 Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it; and whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve it.

33 Whoever tries to make his life secure(m)(n) will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it.(AM)

33 Whoever tries to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will preserve it.

34 I tell you, on that night [i.e., when Jesus returns. See verse 30], there will be two men in one bed; one will be taken [i.e., to be with the Lord] while the other one will be left [i.e., to be punished by the Lord].

34 I tell you, on that night there will be two in one bed; one will be taken and the other will be left.

34 I tell you, in that night there shall be two men in one bed; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left.

34 I tell you, on that night(AN) two will be in one bed: One will be taken and the other will be left.

34 I tell you, two will be seated on the same couch that night. The one will be taken, and the other will be left behind.

35 There will be two women grinding grain together [Note: This was done with a hand-operated millstone where two persons sat across from each other and rotated a circular stone over kernels of grain]; one will be taken while the other one will be left. {{Some ancient manuscripts include verse

35 (AH)There will be two women grinding at the same place; one will be taken and the other will be left.

35 Two women shall be grinding together; the one shall be taken, and the other left.

35 Two women will be grinding grain together: One will be taken and the other left.

35 Two women will be grinding grain together. The one will be taken, and the other will be left behind."

36 There will be two men in a field [i.e., doing farm work]; one will be taken [i.e., to be with the Lord], while the other one will be left [i.e., to be punished by the Lord]." See Matt. 24:40}}

36 [(v)(AI)Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other will be left.”]

36 Two men shall be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.

36 [Two will be in a field: One will be taken, and the other will be left.]”(o)

36 Then they asked him, "Where, Lord, will this take place?" He told them, "Wherever there's a corpse, there the vultures will gather."

37 And they asked Jesus, "Where [will this happen], Lord?" And He answered them, "Wherever there is a [dead] body [you will see] vultures gathered there also."

37 And answering they *said to Him, “Where, Lord?” And He said to them, (AJ)Where the body is, there also the (w)vultures will be gathered.”

37 And they answered and said unto him, Where, Lord? And he said unto them, Wheresoever the body is, thither will the eagles be gathered together.

37 “Where, Lord?”(AO) they asked Him.He said to them, “Where the corpse is, there also the vultures(AP) will be gathered.”
