A Poor Widow's Offering

1 Then Jesus looked up [i.e., from his seated position at the entrance to the Temple], and saw people throwing their gifts [of money] into the treasury [Note: This was a large open-mouthed container used for receiving offerings for meeting expenses of Temple upkeep].

1 (A)And He looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury.

1 And he looked up, and saw the rich men casting their gifts into the treasury.

1 He(A) looked up and saw the rich dropping their offerings into the temple treasury.(B)

1 Now Jesus looked up and saw rich people dropping their gifts into the offering box.

2 And He saw a certain poor widow throwing two small copper coins into it [Note: These two coins amounted to about ten minutes of a farm laborer's pay, or about one dollar in 1994].

2 And He saw a poor widow putting (a)in (B)two (b)small copper coins.

2 And he saw also a certain poor widow casting in thither two mites.

2 He also saw a poor widow dropping in two tiny coins.(a)(C)

2 Then he saw a destitute widow drop in two small copper coins.

3 So, He said, "Truly I tell you, this poor widow has thrown in more than all the rest [i.e., referring to the many rich people who were also throwing in money].

3 And He said, “Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all of them;

3 And he said, Of a truth I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast in more than they all:

3 “I tell you the truth,” He said. “This poor widow has put in more than all of them.(D)

3 He said, "I tell you with certainty, this destitute widow has dropped in more than all of them,

4 For all of them threw in from their abundance, but she threw in from her poverty all she had to live on."

4 for they all out of their (c)surplus put into the (d)offering; but she out of her poverty put in all (e)that she had (C)to live on.”

4 For all these have of their abundance cast in unto the offerings of God: but she of her penury hath cast in all the living that she had.

4 For all these people have put in gifts out of their surplus, but she out of her poverty has put in all she had to live on.”

4 because all the others contributed to the offering out of their surplus, but she, in her poverty, dropped in everything she had to live on."

The Destruction Of The Temple Predicted

5 Then, as someone [i.e., of His disciples. See Mark 13:1], spoke of how the Temple was decorated with beautiful stones and objects dedicated as gifts, Jesus said,

5 (D)And while some were talking about the temple, that it was adorned with beautiful stones and votive gifts, He said,

5 And as some spake of the temple, how it was adorned with goodly stones and gifts, he said,

5 As(E) some were talking about the temple complex, how it was adorned with beautiful stones and gifts dedicated to God,(b) He said,

5 Now while some people were talking about the Temple how it was decorated with beautiful stones and gifts dedicated to God he said,

6 "As for these things you are looking at, the time will come when there will not be one stone left on another here that will not be thrown down."

6 “As for these things which you are looking at, the days will come in which (E)there will not be left one stone upon another which will not be torn down.”

6 As for these things which ye behold, the days will come, in the which there shall not be left one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.

6 “These things that you see—the days will come(F) when not one stone will be left on another that will not be thrown down!”(G)

6 "As for these things that you see, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another that won't be knocked down."

Signs Of The End Of The Age

7 So, they asked Him, saying, "Teacher, when will these things [you just spoke of] happen? And what will be the sign [that indicates] when these things are about to be fulfilled?"

7 They questioned Him, saying, “Teacher, when therefore will these things happen? And what will be the (f)sign when these things are about to take place?”

7 And they asked him, saying, Master, but when shall these things be? and what sign will there be when these things shall come to pass?

7 “Teacher,” they asked Him, “so when will these things be? And what will be the sign when these things are about to take place?”(H)

7 Then they asked him, "Teacher, when will these things take place, and what will be the sign that these things are about to take place?"

8 And He replied, "Pay attention, so that you are not led astray [from the truth]. For many [false teachers] will come, claiming to be me, and saying, 'I am [the Christ],' and 'The time is near.' [But] do not go after them.

8 And He said, “See to it that you are not misled; for many will come in My name, saying, ‘(F)I am He,’ and, ‘The time is near.’ (G)Do not go after them.

8 And he said, Take heed that ye be not deceived: for many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and the time draweth near: go ye not therefore after them.

8 Then He said, “Watch out that you are not deceived.(I) For many will come in My name,(J) saying, ‘I am He,’(K) and, ‘The time is near.’ Don’t follow them.(L)

8 He said, "Be careful that you are not deceived, because many will come in my name and say, "I AM' and, "The time has come.' Don't follow them.

9 And when you hear of wars and uprisings [going on], do not be afraid, for such things must necessarily happen first. But the end will not come right away." [Note: By "the end" here Jesus probably alludes to the downfall of Jerusalem, in AD 70, with its attending destruction of the Temple buildings].

9 When you hear of wars and disturbances, do not be terrified; for these things must take place first, but the end does not follow immediately.”

9 But when ye shall hear of wars and commotions, be not terrified: for these things must first come to pass; but the end is not by and by.

9 When you hear of wars and rebellions,(c) don’t be alarmed. Indeed, these things must take place first, but the end won’t come right away.”

9 When you hear of wars and revolutions, never be alarmed, because these sort of things must take place first, but the end won't come right away."

Jesus Foretells Wars And Persecution

10 Then Jesus said to His disciples, "Nations will wage war against one another and kingdoms will attack one another.

10 Then He continued by saying to them, “Nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom,

10 Then said he unto them, Nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom:

10 Then He told them: “Nation will be raised up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.(M)

10 Then he went on to say to them, "Nation will rise up in arms against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.

11 And great earthquakes will happen, and at various places there will be famines and disease epidemics. And there will be fearful events and great [supernatural] signs from heaven.

11 and there will be great earthquakes, and in various places plagues and famines; and there will be terrors and great (g)signs from heaven.

11 And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.

11 There will be violent earthquakes,(N) and famines and plagues(O) in various places, and there will be terrifying sights and great signs from heaven.(P)

11 There will be great earthquakes, famines, and plagues in various places, and there will be fearful events and awful signs from heaven."

Persecution Of Disciples Predicted

12 But before all these things happen, the authorities will grab hold of you, and persecute you, and turn you over to the synagogues and prisons [i.e., for punishment and confinement]. They will take you in front of kings and governors for being loyal to me.

12 “But before all these things, (H)they will lay their hands on you and will persecute you, delivering you to the synagogues and prisons, (h)bringing you before kings and governors for My name’s sake.

12 But before all these, they shall lay their hands on you, and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues, and into prisons, being brought before kings and rulers for my name's sake.

12 But before all these things, they will lay their hands on you(Q) and persecute(R) you. They will hand you over to the synagogues(S) and prisons,(T) and you will be brought before kings and governors(U) because of My name.

12 "But before all these things take place, people will arrest you and persecute you. They will hand you over to synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors for my name's sake.

13 It will result in [an opportunity for] witnessing to them.

13 (I)It will lead to (i)an opportunity for your testimony.

13 And it shall turn to you for a testimony.

13 It will lead to an opportunity for you to witness.(d)(V)

13 It will give you an opportunity to testify.

14 Determine in your hearts, therefore, not to plan ahead how you will answer them [when interrogated],

14 (J)So make up your minds not to prepare beforehand to defend yourselves;

14 Settle it therefore in your hearts, not to meditate before what ye shall answer:

14 Therefore make up your minds(e) not to prepare your defense ahead of time,(W)

14 So purpose in your hearts not to prepare your defense ahead of time,

15 for I will give you a mouth [i.e., the ability to speak properly] and wisdom [i.e., the knowledge of what to say], which none of your opponents will be able to resist or speak against.

15 for (K)I will give you (j)utterance and wisdom which none of your opponents will be able to resist or refute.

15 For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist.

15 for I will give you such words(f)(X) and a wisdom(Y) that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict.(Z)

15 because I will give you the ability to speak, along with wisdom, that none of your opponents will be able to resist or refute.

16 But you will be turned over [i.e., to the authorities for punishment] even by [your own] parents and brothers and relatives and friends. And they will [even] put some of you to death.

16 But you will be betrayed even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death,

16 And ye shall be betrayed both by parents, and brethren, and kinsfolks, and friends; and some of you shall they cause to be put to death.

16 You will even be betrayed by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends.(AA) They will kill some of you.

16 You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends, and they will put some of you to death.

17 And you will be hated by all people for being loyal to me.

17 and you will be hated by all because of My name.

17 And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake.

17 You will be hated by everyone because of My name,(AB)

17 You will be hated continuously by everyone because of my name.

18 However, not one hair of your head will be lost.

18 Yet (L)not a hair of your head will perish.

18 But there shall not an hair of your head perish.

18 but not a hair of your head will be lost.(AC)

18 And yet not a hair on your head will be lost.

19 [But], by holding out steadfastly, you will gain your life. [Note: This means either "preserve your earthly life," or "attain never ending life"].

19 (M)By your endurance you will gain your (k)lives.

19 In your patience possess ye your souls.

19 By your endurance gain(g) your lives.(AD)

19 By your endurance you will protect your lives."

The Desolation Of Jerusalem

20 "So, when you see Jerusalem surrounded by [Roman] armies, then you will know that her total destruction is near.

20 “But when you see Jerusalem (N)surrounded by armies, then (l)recognize that her desolation is near.

20 And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh.

20 “When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies,(AE) then recognize that its desolation(AF) has come near.

20 "When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then understand that its devastation is approaching.

21 Then those [of you] in Judea are to run away into the [nearby] mountains. And those who are inside of the city are to leave it [immediately]. And those who are in the countryside should not enter the city.

21 Then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains, and those who are in the midst of (m)the city must leave, and (O)those who are in the country must not enter (n)the city;

21 Then let them which are in Judaea flee to the mountains; and let them which are in the midst of it depart out; and let not them that are in the countries enter thereinto.

21 Then those in Judea must flee(AG) to the mountains!(AH) Those inside the city(h) must leave it, and those who are in the country must not enter it,

21 Then those in Judea must flee to the mountains, those inside the city must leave it, and those in the countryside must not go into it,

22 For these are times for punishment [i.e., to be inflicted on Jerusalem], so that everything written [i.e., by the prophets] may be fulfilled [i.e., about Jerusalem's destruction. See Dan. 9:26-27].

22 because these are (P)days of vengeance, so that all things which are written will be fulfilled.

22 For these be the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled.

22 because these are days of vengeance(AI) to fulfill all the things that are written.

22 because these are the days of vengeance when all that is written will be fulfilled.

23 It will be too bad for pregnant women and those who are nursing [babies] in those days! For there will be great distress in this land [i.e., Judea, and especially Jerusalem], and raging anger [will be shown] against these people [i.e., by the Roman armies].

23 Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days; for (Q)there will be great distress upon the (o)land and wrath to this people;

23 But woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck, in those days! for there shall be great distress in the land, and wrath upon this people.

23 Woe to pregnant women and nursing mothers in those days,(AJ) for there will be great distress in the land(i) and wrath against this people.

23 "How terrible it will be for those women who are pregnant or who are nursing babies in those days! because there will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people.

24 And people will die by the sword and be led captive into all nations. And Jerusalem will be trampled on by the [unconverted] Gentiles [i.e., by the Romans and later by others] until the times of [domination by] the Gentiles are fulfilled.

24 and they will fall by (R)the edge of the sword, and will be led captive into all the nations; and (S)Jerusalem will be (T)trampled under foot by the Gentiles until (U)the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

24 And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.

24 They will fall by the edge of the sword(AK) and be led captive into all the nations, and Jerusalem will be trampled by the Gentiles(j)(AL) until the times of the Gentiles(AM) are fulfilled.

24 They will fall by the edge of the sword and be carried off as captives among all the nations, and Jerusalem will be trampled on by the unbelievers until the times of the unbelievers are fulfilled."

The Arrival Of The Son Of Man

25 "Then [Note: This event answers to the "immediately" of Matt. 24:29, and suggests the next major event on God's calendar] there will be [supernatural] signs [evident] in the sun and moon and stars. And on earth [there will be] distress among nations; they will be perplexed by the roaring of the ocean's churning waves. [Note: Probably this is figurative language for highly agitated conditions on earth].

25 “There will be (p)signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth dismay among nations, in perplexity at the roaring of the sea and the waves,

25 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;

25 “Then there will be signs in the sun, moon, and stars;(AN) and there will be anguish on the earth among nations bewildered by the roaring sea and waves.(AO)

25 "There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and there will be distress on earth among the nations that are confused by the roaring of the sea and its waves.

26 Men will become despondent from fear, and from dreading the [terrible] things which will come upon the earth, for the forces of the heavens will be shaken.

26 men fainting from fear and the expectation of the things which are coming upon the (q)world; for the powers of (r)the heavens will be shaken.

26 Men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.

26 People will faint from fear and expectation of the things that are coming on the world, because the celestial powers will be shaken.(AP)

26 People will faint from fear and apprehension because of the things that are to come on the inhabited world, because the powers of heaven will be shaken.

27 And then they will see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great splendor [Note: This no doubt refers to the second coming of Christ. See II Pet. 3:9-10; Matt. 24:30-31; Rev. 1:7].

27 (V)Then they will see (W)the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

27 And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

27 Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud(AQ) with power and great glory.(AR)

27 Then they will see "the Son of Man coming in a cloud' with power and great glory.

28 But when these things begin to happen, stand up and lift up your heads [i.e., in anticipation], for your redemption [i.e., deliverance, either from destruction or condemnation] is getting closer."

28 But when these things begin to take place, straighten up and lift up your heads, because (X)your redemption is drawing near.”

28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.

28 But when these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is near!”(AS)

28 "Now when these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your deliverance is approaching."

The Parable Of The Fig Tree

29 Then Jesus told them a parable: "Look at the fig tree, as well as all [other] trees:

29 Then He told them a parable: “Behold the fig tree and all the trees;

29 And he spake to them a parable; Behold the fig tree, and all the trees;

29 Then He told them a parable: “Look at the fig tree, and all the trees.

29 Then he told them a parable: "Look at the fig tree and all the trees.

30 When they begin to sprout their leaves you know when you look at them, without being told, that summer is near.

30 as soon as they put forth leaves, you see it and (Y)know for yourselves that summer is now near.

30 When they now shoot forth, ye see and know of your own selves that summer is now nigh at hand.

30 As soon as they put out leaves you can see for yourselves and recognize that summer is already near.

30 As soon as they produce leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is already near.

31 In the same way also, when you see these things happening [i.e., the above mentioned "signs"], you can know that the kingdom of God [i.e., either its heavenly phase or the destruction of Jerusalem] is near.

31 So you also, when you see these things happening, (s)recognize that (Z)the kingdom of God is near.

31 So likewise ye, when ye see these things come to pass, know ye that the kingdom of God is nigh at hand.

31 In the same way, when you see these things happening, recognize(k) that the kingdom of God is near.

31 In the same way, when you see these things taking place, you will know that the kingdom of God is near.

32 Truly I tell you, the people of this generation will not [all] die off before all these things [i.e., mentioned above] happen.

32 Truly I say to you, this (t)generation will not pass away until all things take place.

32 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away, till all be fulfilled.

32 I assure you: This generation will certainly not pass away until all things take place.(AT)

32 I tell all of you with certainty, this generation won't disappear until all these things take place.

33 Although the sky and the earth will pass away [See II Pet. 3:10], my words will not pass away [i.e., they will certainly come true].

33 (AA)Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.

33 Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.

33 Heaven and earth will pass away,(AU) but My words will never pass away.(AV)

33 Heaven and earth will disappear, but my words won't ever disappear."

Be Alert

34 "But pay attention to yourselves so that your hearts do not become overburdened by carousing, and drunkenness, and the worries of life. [If you do], that 'day' [i.e., Jesus' second coming and judgment] will arrive suddenly, like a trap [i.e., which catches an animal by surprise].

34 (AB)Be on guard, so that your hearts will not be weighted down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of life, and that day will not come on you suddenly like a trap;

34 And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.

34 “Be on your guard,(AW) so that your minds are not dulled(l) from carousing,(m) drunkenness,(AX) and worries of life,(AY) or that day will come on you unexpectedly(AZ)

34 "Constantly be on your guard so that your hearts will not be loaded down with self-indulgence, drunkenness, and the worries of this life, or that day will take you by surprise

35 For that is the way this 'day' will arrive for everyone [else] living on the entire earth.

35 for it will come upon all those who dwell on the face of all the earth.

35 For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth.

35 like a trap. For it will come on all who live on the face of the whole earth.

35 like a trap, because it will come on everyone who lives on the face of the earth.

36 But you should be alert at all times, offering earnest prayers, so that you will be strong enough to escape all these things that will happen, and to appear [acceptable] in front of the Son of man [on that day]."

36 But (AC)keep on the alert at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are about to take place, and to (AD)stand before the Son of Man.”

36 Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.

36 But be alert at all times,(BA) praying that you may have strength(n) to escape(BB) all these things that are going to take place and to stand before the Son of Man.”

36 So be alert at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place and to take your stand in the presence of the Son of Man."

37 Now Jesus was teaching in the Temple every day, and He went out and lodged on the hill called Olivet every night [Note: Possibly this meant He lodged in a house in Bethany, which was situated on the side of this hill].

37 Now (u)during the day He was (AE)teaching in the temple, but (v)(AF)at evening He would go out and spend the night on (w)(AG)the mount that is called (x)Olivet.

37 And in the day time he was teaching in the temple; and at night he went out, and abode in the mount that is called the mount of Olives.

37 During(BC) the day, He was teaching in the temple complex,(BD) but in the evening He would go out and spend the night on what is called the Mount of Olives.(BE)

37 Now during the day Jesus would teach in the Temple, but when evening came he would go out and spend the night on what is called the Mount of Olives.

38 And all the people came to hear Him early [each] morning.

38 And all the people would get up (AH)early in the morning to come to Him in the temple to listen to Him.

38 And all the people came early in the morning to him in the temple, for to hear him.

38 Then all the people would come early in the morning to hear Him in the temple complex.(BF)

38 And all the people would get up early in the morning to listen to him in the Temple.
