Verse Concepts The Pharisees and Sadducees [i.e., these were strict sects of the Jewish religion], came out and began disputing with Jesus, asking for a [supernatural] sign from Him, [in an attempt] to test Him.
Then Jesus ordered them, saying, "Pay attention and watch out for the leavening [effect] of the Pharisees and Herod." [Note: By "Herod" is probably meant the Herodians, who were a party favorable to King Herod and, along with the Pharisees and Sadducees, were out to get Jesus. See Matt. 16:6].

Sadducees » Reject the doctrine of the resurrection
Then come the sadducees to Him, who say there is no resurrection; and they asked Him, saying, Master, Moses, in his writings tells us, if any one's brother die, and leave a wife, and leave no children, that his brother shall take his wife, and raise up seed to his brother. Now there were seven brethren: and the first took a wife and died and left no seed; read more.
and the second took her, and died, and he left no seed neither; and the third likewise. And all the seven had her, and left no seed: last of all died the woman also. In the resurrection therefore, when they rise again, whose wife shall be of them; for all the seven had her to wife? And Jesus answering said unto them, Do ye not therefore err, because ye know not the scriptures, nor the power of God? For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels in heaven. But as to the dead, that they are raised, have ye not read in the book of Moses, how God spake to him in the bush, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? He is not the God of the dead, but of the living: therefore ye do greatly mistake.

And some of the Sadducees (who deny a resurrection) came to Him and asked Him, saying, Moses enjoined us, if any man's brother die, having a wife, and he die childless, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed to his brother. Upon his saying this, there rose a contention between the pharisees and the sadducees; and the people were divided. For the sadducees say that there is no resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit; but the pharisees acknowledge both.

And while they were speaking to the people, the priests, and the captain of the temple, and the sadducees came upon them, being vexed that they taught the people, and preached through Jesus the resurrection from the dead. And they laid hands on them, and put them into custody till the next day: for it was now evening.
Then the high priest rose up, and all that were with him, (being of the sect of the sadducees,) and were filled with rage: and laid their hands on the apostles, and put them in the public prison. But an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the prison by night, and having brought them out said, read more.
"Go stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life." And hearing this, they went early in the morning into the temple and taught the people. But the high priest being come, and they that were with him, to the council-chamber, they called together the Sanhedrim, and all the senate of the children of Israel, and sent orders to the prison that they should be brought before them. But when the officers came they found them not in the prison: so they returned, and told them, saying, the prison we found shut with all safety, and the keepers standing without before the doors: but when we opened them, we found no body within. Now when the high priest, and the captain of the temple, and the chief priests heard these words, they were in doubt concerning them, what this would come to; when there came one and told them, saying, behold, the men whom ye put in prison, are in the temple teaching the people. Then the captain went with the officers and brought them, but not with violence; for they were afraid of the people least they should be stoned: and when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest asked them, saying, Did not we strictly charge you not to teach in this name? and behold ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and would bring this man's blood upon us. But Peter, and the other apostles, answered, and said, We ought to obey God rather than men. The God of our fathers hath raised up Jesus whom ye slew and hanged on a tree. Him hath God exalted with his right hand as a prince and saviour, to give repentance to Israel, and remission of sins: and we are his witnesses of what we declare; and so is the holy Spirit, whom God hath given to them that obey Him. And when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and took counsel to put them to death.
