That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.
There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.
Now it happened that when Zacharias' turn came in his division,
And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.

But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.
And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.
And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.

And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.
Then Zacharias asked for a writing tablet and wrote [the words] "His name is John." And they were all amazed.
And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,
Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.
From the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias, which perished between the altar and the temple: verily I say unto you, It shall be required of this generation.

And he will turn back and cause to return many of the sons of Israel to the Lord their God, And he will [himself] go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn back the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient and incredulous and unpersuadable to the wisdom of the upright [which is the knowledge and holy love of the will of God] -- "in order to make ready for the Lord a people [perfectly] prepared [in spirit, adjusted and disposed and placed in the right moral state]. And Zachariah said to the angel, By what shall I know and be sure of this? For I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years. And the angel replied to him, I am Gabriel. I stand in the [very] presence of God, and I have been sent to talk to you and to bring you this good news.

The people [outside in the court] were waiting for Zacharias, and were wondering about his long delay in the temple.
Then they made signs to his father, as to what he wanted him called.
