1 My son, if thou becamest surety for thy friend, thou didst strike thy hands for a stranger;
1 My son, if thou be surety for thy friend, if thou hast stricken thy hand with a stranger,
1 My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor(a)or entered into an agreement with(b) a stranger,(c)(A)
1 My son, if you guarantee a loan for your neighbor, if you have agreed to a deal with a stranger,
2 Thou wert snared with the sayings of thy mouth, thou wert taken with the sayings of thy mouth.
2 If you have been snared with the words of your mouth,Have been caught with the words of your mouth,
2 Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth.
2 trapped by your own words, and caught by your own words,
3 Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself when thou camest into the hand of thy friend; go humble thyself and enlarge thy friend.
3 Do this then, my son, and deliver yourself;Since you have come into the (b)hand of your neighbor,Go, humble yourself, and importune your neighbor.
3 Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself, when thou art come into the hand of thy friend; go, humble thyself, and make sure thy friend.
3 Do this, then, my son, and free yourself, for you have put yourself in your neighbor’s power:Go, humble yourself, and plead with your neighbor.
3 then do this, my son, and deliver yourself, because you have come under your neighbor's control. Go, humble yourself! Plead passionately with your neighbor!
5 Deliver thyself as the roe from the hand, and as the bird from the hand of the fowler.
5 Deliver yourself like a gazelle from the hunter’s handAnd like a (C)bird from the hand of the fowler.
5 Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand of the hunter, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler.
5 Deliver yourself like a gazelle from a hunter's hand, or like a bird from a fowler's hand.
9 How long, O slothful one, wilt thou lie down? when wilt thou rise from thy sleep?
9 How long will you lie down, O sluggard? When will you arise from your sleep?
9 How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?
9 How long will you stay in bed, you slacker? When will you get up from your sleep?
9 How long will you lie down, lazy man? When will you get up from your sleep?
15 For this, his destruction shall come suddenly; in a moment he shall be broken, and none healing.
15 Therefore (P)his calamity will come suddenly;(Q)Instantly he will be broken and there will be (R)no healing.
15 Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly; suddenly shall he be broken without remedy.
15 Therefore, disaster will overtake him suddenly. He will be broken in an instant, and he will never recover.
20 My son, watch the commands of thy father, and thou shalt not reject the laws of thy mother:
20 (Z)My son, observe the commandment of your fatherAnd do not forsake the (k)teaching of your mother;
20 My son, keep thy father's commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother:
20 Keep your father's commands, my son, and never forsake your mother's rules,
22 In thy going about it shall lead thee; in thy lying down it shall watch over thee; and awaking, it shall speak to thee.
22 When you (AB)walk about, (l)they will guide you; When you sleep, (m)they will watch over you;And when you awake, (n)they will talk to you.
22 When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee.
22 When you walk here and there, they will guide you;when you lie down, they will watch over you;when you wake up, they will talk to you.
22 During your travels wisdom will lead you; she will watch over you while you rest; and when you are startled from your sleep, she will commune with you.
23 For the command is a lamp, and the law a light; and the way of life the reproof of instruction:
23 For (AC)the commandment is a lamp and the (o)teaching is light; And reproofs for discipline are the way of life
23 For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:
23 Because the command is a lamp and the Law a light, rebukes that discipline are a way of life
26 For by a woman a harlot, even to a round of bread: and a man's wife will hunt the precious soul.
26 For (AG)on account of a harlot one is reduced to a loaf of bread,And (q)an adulteress (AH)hunts for the precious life.
26 For by means of a whorish woman a man is brought to a piece of bread: and the adulteress will hunt for the precious life.
26 For a prostitute’s fee is only a loaf of bread,(i)but an adulteress(j) goes after a precious life.(AC)
26 because the price of a whore is a loaf of bread, and an adulterous woman stalks a man's precious life.
28 If a man shall go upon burning coals shall his feet not be burnt?
28 Or can a man walk on hot coalsAnd his feet not be scorched?
28 Can one go upon hot coals, and his feet not be burned?
28 Can a man walk on burning coalswithout scorching his feet?
28 Can a man walk on hot coals without scorching his feet?
29 So he going in to his neighbor's wife; all touching upon her shall not be innocent
29 So is the one who (AI)goes in to his neighbor’s wife;Whoever touches her (AJ)will not (s)go unpunished.
29 So he that goeth in to his neighbour's wife; whosoever toucheth her shall not be innocent.
29 So it is with the one who sleeps withanother man’s wife;no one who touches her will go unpunished.(AD)
29 So also is it with someone who has sex with his neighbor's wife; anyone touching her will not remain unpunished.
31 And being found he shall recompense seven fold; he shall give all the substance of his house.
31 But when he is found, he must (AL)repay sevenfold; He must give all the (v)substance of his house.
31 But if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold; he shall give all the substance of his house.
31 Still, if caught, he must pay seven times as much;(AF)he must give up all the wealth in his house.
31 but when he is discovered, he must restore seven-fold, forfeiting the entire value of his house.
32 He committing adultery with a woman lacked a heart: destroying his soul he will do it.
32 The one who commits adultery with a woman is (AM)lacking (w)sense; He who would (AN)destroy (x)himself does it.
32 But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul.
32 Whoever commits adultery with a woman is out of his mind; by doing so he corrupts his own soul.
33 A blow and contempt shall he find; and his reproach shall not be wiped away.
33 Wounds and disgrace he will find,And his reproach will not be blotted out.
33 A wound and dishonour shall he get; and his reproach shall not be wiped away.
33 He will receive a beating and dishonor, and his shame won't disappear,
35 He will not lift up the face of any ransom, and he will not be willing if thou shalt increase the reward.
35 He will not regard any ransom; neither will he rest content, though thou givest many gifts.
35 He will not be appeased by anythingor be persuaded by lavish gifts. >
35 He will not consider any payment, nor will he be willing to accept it, no matter how large the bribe.
