1. A high priest in the days of Nehemiah, who took part in rebuilding of the wall of Jerusalem, Ne 3:1. The same person probably was afterwards censured for profaning the temple, by giving the use of one of its chambers to a heathen and an Ammonite, his relative, De 23:3-4; Ne 12:10; 13:1-9.

The Ammonites and the Moabites shall not come into the congregation of the LORD; no, not in the tenth generation, no they shall never come in to the congregation of the LORD, because they met you not with bread and water in the way when ye came out of Egypt, and because they hired against thee Balaam the son of Beor, the interpreter of Mesopotamia, to curse thee.
And Eliashib the high priest gat him up with his brethren the priests, and builded the Sheep-gate. They hallowed it, and set up the doors of it: even unto the tower of Meah hallowed they it, namely unto the tower of Hananel.
And what time as the book of Moses was read in the ears of the people there was found written therein, that the Ammonites and Moabites should never come into the congregation of God, because they met not the children of Israel with bread and water, and hired Balaam against them, that he should curse them: nevertheless our God turned the curse into a blessing. read more. Now when they heard the Law, they separated from Israel everyone that had mixed himself therein. And before this had the Priest Eliashib delivered the chest of the house of our God unto his kinsman Tobiah: for he had made him a great chest, and there had they afore time laid the meat offerings, frankincense, vessel, and the tithes of corn, wine and oil - according to the commandment given to the Levites, singers and porters - and the heave offerings of the priests. But in all this was not I at Jerusalem: for in the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon, came I unto the king, and after certain days obtained I license of the king to come to Jerusalem. And I gat knowledge of the evil that Eliashib did unto Tobiah, in that he had made him a chest in the court of the house of God, and it grieved me sore, and I cast forth all the vessels of the house of Tobiah out of the chest, and commanded them to cleanse the chest. And thither brought I again the vessels of the house of God, the meat offering and the incense.

whom God will restore. (1.) A priest, head of one of the courses of the priests of the time of David (1Ch 24:12).
(2.) A high priest in the time of Ezra and Nehemiah (Ne 12:22-23). He rebuilt the eastern city wall (Ne 3:1), his own mansion being in that quarter, on the ridge Ophel (Ne 3:20-21). His indulgence of Tobiah the Ammonite provoked the indignation of Nehemiah (Ne 13:4,7).

3. High priest when Nehemiah rebuilt the walls (Ne 3:1-21). Energetic in building the sheepgate, sanctifying and setting up its doors; but relationship to Tobiah the Ammonite outweighed regard for the sanctity of the temple. Nehemiah was angry with him for preparing a room therein for his pagan connection (Ne 13:4-7), in opposition to God's prohibition (De 23:3-4). His grandson too had married the pagan Horonite Sanballat's daughter (Ne 13:28). Ungodly alliances are a snare to religious professors (2Co 6:14-18; Mt 10:37). "Therefore (says Nehemiah) I chased him from me. Remember them, O my God, because they have defiled the priesthood and the covenant of the priesthood." His genealogy is given (Ne 12:10,22), see Ezr 10:6.

1. The high priest who was contemporary with Nehemiah. He was son of Joiakim, grandson of Jeshua the son of Jozadak, the contemporary of Zerubbabel (Ne 12:10; Ezr 3:1), and father of Joiada (Ne 12:10; 13:28). He assisted in the rebuilding of the walls of Jerus, during Nehemiah's governorship (Ne 3:1). He can have had no sympathy with the exclusive policy of Ezra and Nehemiah, for both he himself and members of his family allied themselves with the leading foreign opponents of Nehemiah. See Joiada, No. 2, Tobiah, and Sanballat. 2. A singer of the time of Ezra, who had married a foreign wife (Ezr 10:24); called in 1Es 9:24 Eliasibus. 3.
