was probably written a year or so after the first, and from Rome, where Paul was for a second time a prisoner, and was sent to Timothy by the hands of Tychicus. In it he entreats Timothy to come to him before winter, and to bring Mark with him (comp. Php 2:22). He was anticipating that "the time of his departure was at hand" (2Ti 4:6), and he exhorts his "son Timothy" to all diligence and steadfastness, and to patience under persecution (2Ti 1:6-15), and to a faithful discharge of all the duties of his office (2Ti 4:1-5), with all the solemnity of one who was about to appear before the Judge of quick and dead.

I charge thee therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the quick and dead at his appearing and his kingdom, Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; convince, rebuke, exhort, with all long-suffering and teaching. read more. For the time will come, when they will not endure sound doctrine, but will heap to themselves teachers, according to their own desires, having itching ears. And they will turn away their ears from the truth, and turn aside to fables. But watch thou in all things, endure affliction, do the work of an evangelist, fulfil thy ministry. For I am now ready to be offered up, and the time of my departure is at hand.
