but I say unto you, don't return evil for evil; on the contrary, if any one strike thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other likewise.

with all humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another in love;

a bishop therefore ought to be of an unspotted character, to have but one wife, to be sober, prudent, grave, hospitable, and qualified for teaching: not given to wine or violence, but of a gentle temper, averse to contention and avarice: a master of economy,

a christian must not be litigious, but easy to all men, qualify'd to instruct,

but wisdom deriv'd from heaven is first dispassionate, then pacific, equitable, and obsequious: full of beneficence, and all social virtue, free from partiality, and hypocrisy.

now the effects of vicious passions are manifestly these, fornication, uncleanness, brutality, idolatry, poisoning, enmities, quarrels, emulations, animosities, strife, seditions, factions, envyings,

upon hearing this, the whole synagogue were incensed against him. and breaking up the assembly, they drove him out of the city, to the precipice of the hill, upon which it was built, in order to throw him headlong down.

whereupon they fell into a rage, and consulted together, what measures to take against Jesus.

at these words, they were fir'd with indignation, and cry'd out, "great is Diana of the Ephesians." and the whole city was fill'd with confusion: all crouded in a body to the theatre, dragging with them Gaius and Aristarchus, both of Macedonia, who had travell'd with Paul.

Till that word, the Jews had given their attention, but then they broke out into a full cry, "out of the world with such a fellow: for it is not fit he should live." thus they roar'd, and threw off their cloaks, and scatter'd dust in the air:

are you angry? have a care you don't sin. "let not the sun go down upon your wrath," lest the devil take hold of the opportunity.

Finally, my brethren, whatever has the character of truth, of dignity, of justice, of chastity, whatever can procure you esteem and reputation, in a word, if there be any thing virtuous or praise-worthy, let that be the object of your enquiry.

Wherefore, my dear brethren, let every one be eager to hear, averse to contradiction, and deaf to passion. for he that is not dispassionate is a stranger to the practice of true virtue.

Let your minds then be duely prepar'd, be vigilant, and constantly expect the favour you will meet with at the appearance of Jesus Christ.

Do you on your part employ all your care in adding to your faith, fortitude: to fortitude, knowledge: to knowledge, temperance: to temperance, patience: to patience, piety: to piety, fraternal affection: and to fraternal affection, universal benevolence.

I say then, conduct yourselves by the spirit, and you will not then gratify the animal passions. for the vicious desires are contrary to those of the spirit, and the inclinations of the spirit are contrary to those of the animal part; these are opposite to each other, so that you do not the things that you would. but if you are governed by the spirit, you are not subject to the law.

Wherefore, my beloved, as you have always obey'd the gospel, not only when I was with you, but much more now while I am absent, continue the work of your own salvation, whatever persecutions you apprehend: for it is God that influences your desires and endeavours, out of his benevolence to you.

for the spirit, which God has given us, is not a spirit of timidity, but of fortitude, of benevolence, and of moderation.
