It is he then that made some, apostles: some, prophets: some, evangelists: and others, pastors, and teachers:

teaching them to observe every thing which I have enjoin'd you: and be assured I shall be always with you to the end of the world.

a bishop therefore ought to be of an unspotted character, to have but one wife, to be sober, prudent, grave, hospitable, and qualified for teaching:

let them not treat their christian masters, on pretence of being their brethren, with less respect: but be the more obsequious, because they are believers, and deserve to be belov'd, for the kind provision they make for them. let this be the subject of your instructions, and exhortation.

These things recommend and teach.

with great temper and meekness informing those, who differ in opinion; because he does not know, but God may change their minds, by convincing them of the truth.

Beware of false prophets, who to outward appearance are sheep, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves.

whoever therefore shall break any commandment, tho' of the least importance, and shall teach men so to do, shall not have the least admittance into the kingdom of the Messias: but whoever shall do and teach them, he shall be great in the kingdom of the Messias.

why do your disciples violate the tradition of our ancestors, in not washing their hands when they eat bread? but he answered them, why do you violate the law of God to follow your tradition? for this is a commandment of God, "honour thy father and mother; and, he that curses father or mother, let him be punish'd with death." read more.
but your doctrine is this, if any man declares to his father or mother, that whatever he has to give for their relief is dedicated to the temple; he is not oblig'd to regard his father or his mother. thus have ye disannull'd the commandment of God by your tradition. the prophecy of Esaias exactly suits such hypocrites as you; "this people, says he, draw nigh to me, they honour me with their lips: while their hearts are far from me. but in vain they worship me, teaching for doctrines the institutions of men." Then he called the multitude and said to them, hear and understand. that which entereth by the mouth is not what defiles a man: but what defiles the man is that which is discharged by the mouth. Thereupon his disciples drawing nigh, said, did you observe, how the Pharisees were scandalized at your discourse? but he answered, every plantation which my heavenly father hath not planted shall be rooted up. let them alone: they are blind leaders of the blind. now if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch. then Peter said to him, tell us the meaning of that expression. and Jesus said, are ye also yet without understanding? do not ye yet conceive, that whatever enters at the mouth, passes to the belly, and is discharged downwards? but what proceeds out of the mouth, is deriv'd from the heart, and that defiles the man. out of the heart proceed evil designs, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false testimony, slanders. these are the things which defile a man: but to eat without washing one's hands, that does not defile a man.

As there were false prophets among the people of Israel, there will likewise be false doctors among you, who by introducing pernicious sects, and by renouncing the Lord, who bought them, will bring upon themselves swift destruction.

If any one deviate from this doctrine, not adhering to the wholesome instructions of our Lord Jesus Christ, the true doctrine of piety,

broach'd by hypocrititical impostors, whose consciences are cauteriz'd,

pretending to be doctors of the law, tho' they neither understand what they advance, nor upon what it is founded.

for the time will come, when they will not endure sound doctrine, but get teachers of their own corrupt taste, to sooth their ears that itch for flattery:
