And from that day the ark remained in Kiriath-jearim for a very long time, for it was twenty years [until the reign of King David]; and all the house of Israel lamented (wailed) and grieved after the Lord.

When the words that David spoke were heard, the men reported them to Saul, and he sent for him.

So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone, and he struck down the Philistine and killed him; but there was no sword in Davids hand.

Saul was even more afraid of David; and Saul became Davids constant enemy.

Then Saul sent messengers to Davids house to watch for him, so that he might kill him in the morning. But Michal, Davids wife, told him, “If you do not save your life tonight, tomorrow you will be killed.”

So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David. [He added,] “May the Lord require it at the hands of Davids enemies. [that is, hold them accountable for any harm they inflict on David].”

The king sat on his seat as on previous occasions, on his seat by the wall; then Jonathan stood up, and Abner [his commander] sat down by Saul’s side, but Davids place was empty.

But on the next day, the second day of the new moon, Davids place was empty [again]; and Saul said to Jonathan his son, “Why has the son of Jesse not come to the meal, either yesterday or today?”

But Davids men said to him, “Listen, we are afraid here in Judah. How much more then if we go to Keilah against the battle lines of the Philistines?”

Davids men said to him, “Behold, this is the day of which the Lord said to you, ‘Behold, I will hand over your enemy to you, and you shall do to him as seems good to you.’” Then David arose [in the darkness] and stealthily cut off the hem (edge) of Saul’s robe.

Afterward, Davids conscience bothered him because he had cut off the hem of Saul’s robe.

When Davids young men came, they spoke to Nabal according to all these words in the name of David; then they waited.

But Nabal answered Davids servants and said, “Who is David? And who is the son of Jesse? There are many servants today, each of whom is breaking away from his master.

So Davids young men made their way back and returned; and they came and told him everything that was said [to them by Nabal].

But Davids men were very good to us, and we were not harmed or treated badly, nor did we miss anything as long as we were with them, when we were in the fields.

But Saul had given Michal his [younger] daughter, Davids wife, to Palti the son of Laish, who was from Gallim.

Then Saul recognized Davids voice and said, “Is this your voice, my son David?” And David said, “It is my voice, my lord the king!”

Now Davids two wives had been captured, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess and Abigail the widow of Nabal the Carmelite.

So David captured all the flocks and herds [which the enemy had], and [the people] drove those animals before him and said, “This is Davids spoil.”

Joab returned from pursuing Abner; and when he had gathered all the people together, nineteen of Davids servants were missing, besides Asahel.

and the sixth, Ithream, by Davids wife Eglah. These [sons] were born to David in Hebron.

Then David said on that day, “Whoever strikes the Jebusites, let him go up through the [underground] water shaft to strike the lame and the blind, who are detested by Davids soul [because of their arrogance].” So [for that reason] they say, “The blind or the lame (Jebusites) shall not come into the [royal] house [of Israel].”

Then, as the ark of the Lord came into the City of David, Michal, Saul’s daughter [Davids wife], looked down from the window above and saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord; and she felt contempt for him in her heart [because she thought him undignified].

When Toi king of Hamath heard about Davids defeat of all the forces of Hadadezer,

Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was [head] over both the Cherethites and Pelethites [the king’s bodyguards]; and Davids sons were chief [confidential] advisers (officials) [to the king].

Then Ziba said to the king, “Your servant will do according to everything that my lord the king commands.” So Mephibosheth ate at Davids table as one of the king’s sons.

But Amnon had a friend whose name was Jonadab the son of Shimeah, Davids brother; and Jonadab was a very shrewd (cunning) man.

But Jonadab the son of Shimeah, Davids brother, responded, “Do not let my lord assume that all the king’s sons have been put to death; for only Amnon is dead. This act of revenge has been on Absalom’s mind since the day Amnon violated his sister Tamar.

And Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, Davids counselor, from his city Giloh, while he was offering sacrifices. And the conspiracy grew strong, for the people with Absalom increased continually.

All of Davids servants passed on beside him, and all the Cherethites, Pelethites and the Gittites, six hundred men who had come with him from Gath, passed on before the king.

So Hushai, Davids friend, returned to the city, and [at about the same time] Absalom came into Jerusalem.

Then Abishai [Davids nephew], the son of Zeruiah, said to the king, “Why should this dead dog (despicable person) curse my lord the king? Let me go over and take off his head.”

Now it happened when Hushai the Archite, Davids friend, came to Absalom, Hushai said to him, “Long live the king! Long live the king!”

And all the men of Israel came to the king and said to him, “Why have our brothers (relatives), the men [from the tribe] of Judah, stolen you away and brought the king and his household and all Davids men with him over the Jordan [instead of waiting for us to arrive]?”

So Joab’s men went after him, along with [Davids bodyguards] the Cherethites and Pelethites and all the warriors; they went out from Jerusalem to pursue Sheba the son of Bichri.

But Abishai the son of Zeruiah came to Davids aid, and struck and killed the Philistine. Then Davids men swore to him, “You shall not go out again with us to battle, so that you do not extinguish the lamp of Israel.”

But Davids heart (conscience) troubled him after he had counted the people. David said to the Lord, “I have sinned greatly in what I have done. But now, O Lord, please take away the sin of Your servant, for I have acted very foolishly.”

When David got up in the morning, the word of the Lord came to the prophet Gad, Davids seer, saying,

Then Adonijah the son of [Davids wife] Haggith exalted himself, saying, “I [the eldest living son] will be king.” So [following Absalom’s example] he prepared for himself chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.

He had conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah [Davids half sister] and with Abiathar the priest; and they followed Adonijah and helped him.

But Zadok the priest, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, Nathan the prophet, Shimei, Rei, and Davids most formidable warriors did not side with Adonijah [in his desire to become king].

So Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the Cherethites, and the Pelethites [the king’s bodyguards] went down [from Jerusalem] and had Solomon ride on King Davids mule, and brought him to [the spring at] Gihon.

When Davids time to die approached, he gave instructions to Solomon his son, saying,

The king also said to Shimei, “You are aware in your own heart of all the evil you did to my father David; so the Lord shall return your evil on your own head.

but he [and his descendants] shall have one tribe (Benjamin was annexed to Judah), for the sake of My servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel—

So when all [the ten northern tribes of] Israel saw that the king did not listen to them, the people replied to the king, saying,“What portion do we have in David?
We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse;
To your tents, O Israel!
Look now after your own house, David!”
Then Israel went back to their tents.

Nevertheless, for Davids sake the Lord his God gave him a lamp (descendant on the throne) in Jerusalem, setting up his son after him and establishing Jerusalem,

The priest gave to the captains of hundreds the spears and shields that had been King Davids, which were in the house of the Lord.

‘For I will protect this city to save it, for My own sake and for My servant Davids sake.’”

I will add fifteen years to your life and save you and this city [Jerusalem] from the hand of the king of Assyria; and I will protect this city for My own sake and for My servant Davids sake.”’”

Now these are those whom David appointed over the service of song in the house of the Lord after the ark [of the covenant] rested there.

The sons of Tola: Uzzi, Rephaiah, Jeriel, Jahmai, Ibsam, and Samuel, heads of their fathers’ households. The sons of Tola were courageous men in their generations; their number in the days of David was 22,600.

Now David said, “Whoever strikes down a Jebusite first shall be chief and commander.” Joab the son of Zeruiah [Davids half sister] went up first, and so he was made chief.

Now these are the chiefs of Davids mighty men, who strongly supported him in his kingdom, together with all Israel, to make him king, in accordance with the word of the Lord concerning Israel.

This is the list of Davids mighty men: Jashobeam, the son of a Hachmonite, the chief of the thirty [heroes]. He lifted up his spear against three hundred whom he killed at one time.

Zelek the Ammonite, Naharai the Berothite, the armor bearer of Joab the son of Zeruiah [Davids half sister],

Some [of the men] of Manasseh also defected to David when he came with the Philistines to go to battle against Saul. But Davids men did not [actually] assist the Philistines, for the lords (governors) of the Philistines after consultation sent him away, saying, “At the cost of our heads he may defect to his master Saul.”

It happened that as the ark of the covenant of the Lord came to the City of David, Michal [Davids wife] the daughter of Saul, looking down through a window, saw King David leaping and dancing [in celebration]; and she despised him in her heart.

He defeated Moab, and the Moabites became Davids servants and brought tribute (gifts).

Then David put military outposts among the Arameans in Damascus; and the Arameans became Davids servants and brought tribute. Thus the Lord helped David wherever he went.

He put military outposts in Edom, and all the Edomites became Davids servants. Thus the Lord helped David wherever he went.

Joab the son of Zeruiah was in command of the army, and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was the recorder;

and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was in charge of the Cherethites and the Pelethites [Davids bodyguards], and the sons of David were chiefs at the king’s side.

Therefore Hanun took Davids servants, shaved them [cutting off half their beards], and cut off their garments in the middle as far as their buttocks, and sent them away [in humiliation].

David took the crown of their king from his head and found that it weighed a talent of gold and that there was a precious stone in it; so it was set on Davids head. He also brought a very great amount of spoil (plunder) out of the city [of Rabbah].

When he taunted Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimea, Davids brother, killed him.

And the Lord said to Gad, Davids seer,

Of the Hebronites: Jerijah was the chief (these Hebronites were examined according to their descendants and fathers’ households in the fortieth [and final] year of Davids reign, and men of courage and ability were found among them at Jazer in Gilead)

of Judah, Elihu, one of Davids brothers; of Issachar, Omri the son of Michael;

Jaziz the Hagrite was in charge of the flocks. All these were overseers and stewards of the property which belonged to King David.

Also Jonathan, Davids uncle, was a counselor and advisor, a man of understanding and wisdom, and a scribe; and Jehiel the son of Hachmoni attended (tutored) the king’s sons.

Then Jehoiada the priest gave to the captains of hundreds the spears and the large and small shields which had been King Davids, which were in the house of God.

At the Fountain Gate they went directly up the steps of the City of David by the stairway of the wall above Davids house to the Water Gate on the east.


God has spoken in His holiness:
“I will rejoice, I will portion out Shechem [as I divide Canaan among My people],
And measure out the Valley of Succoth.

O Lord, remember on Davids behalf
All his hardship and affliction;

Then a Shoot (the Messiah) will spring from the stock of Jesse [Davids father],
And a Branch from his roots will bear fruit.

Then say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord, “Behold, I am about to fill with drunkenness all the people of this land, even the kings who sit on Davids throne, the priests, the prophets and all the people of Jerusalem.

For if you will indeed obey this word, then kings will enter through the gates of this palace, sitting in Davids place on his throne, riding in chariots and on horses, even the king himself and his servants and his people.

But they shall serve the Lord their God and [the descendant of] David their King, whom I will raise up for them.


Who improvise to the sound of the harp—
Like David they have composed songs for themselves

On that day,’ declares the Lord of hosts, ‘I will take you, Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, My servant,’ declares the Lord, ‘and I will make you [through the Messiah, your descendant] like a signet ring, for I have chosen you [as the one with whom to renew My covenant to Davids line],’” declares the Lord of hosts.

The land will mourn, every family by itself; the [royal] family of the house of David by itself and their wives by themselves; the family of the house of Nathan [Davids son] by itself and their wives by themselves;
