But the Pharisees seeing it said to him, Behold thy disciples do what it is not lawful to do on the sabbath. But he said to them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was hungry, and they that were with him? How he entered into the house of God, and ate the shew-bread, which it was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them who were with him, but only for the priests? read more.
Or have ye not read in the law, that on the sabbath-days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath and are blameless? But I say to you, That one greater than the temple is here. And if ye had known what that meaneth, I will have mercy and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless. For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath. And departing thence, he went into their synagogue. And behold, there was a man who had a withered hand. And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath? that they might accuse him. And he said to them, What man is there among you, that shall have one sheep, who if it fall into a pit on the sabbath, will not lay hold on it and lift it out? How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do good on the sabbath-day. Then saith he to the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he stretched it forth; and it was restored whole, as the other. Then the Pharisees went out, and took counsel against him, how they might kill him.

And there arose certain, and bore false witness against him, saying, We heard him say, I will destroy this temple made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands. And neither so was their evidence sufficient. Then the high priest standing up in the midst, asked Jesus, saying, Answerest thou nothing? What is it which these witness against thee? But he held his peace and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him and said to him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed? And Jesus said, I am: and ye shall see the Son of man, sitting on the right-hand of power, and coming with the clouds of heaven. Then the high priest rent his clothes and saith, What farther need have we of witnesses? Ye have heard the blasphemy: what think ye? And they all condemned him to deserve death. And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to buffet him, and to say to him, Prophesy, And the officers smote him with the palms of their hands.
